Hello- I am currently on O-A visa and my husband on a follow visa (O). My visa will expire oct 2020, and I am considering renewing in USA rather than here in hopes that I won’t have to tie up funds in Thai bank account. Has anyone done it this way? If so, I have the following questions:

Do I have to again submit health certificate, criminal background check, and financial statements as I did when first applying at Thai consulate in LA?

What about health insurance situation?

A very helpful immigration officer advised that I may switch my visa to a O visa in order to not be mandated to take out health insurance

If so does that mean I need to report at border every 90 days?

My husband turns 50 this month - his current O visa is valid until May 2020.

Can he remain on O visa and renew this even though he is now 50? What about health insurance in this case?

Apologies for the length of email and so many questions. Thank you in advance for your input!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, on an O-A visa, is considering renewing the visa from the USA to avoid tying up funds in a Thai bank account. They inquire about the need to resubmit documents like health certificates and financial statements, as well as the health insurance requirements. Additionally, they seek clarification about switching to a Non-Immigrant O visa, possible 90-day reporting, and the implications for their husband’s O visa renewal as he turns 50.

If you apply for an OA in your home country the required document is the same a before + now you need health insurance. Your money can remain in your home country.

If you enter Thailand on non- O the you can apply for a 1 year extension. You do not need insurance but your money has to be in a Thai bank. First you buy the single entry O visa and the the 1 year extension and there are no regular border runs though you still have to 90 day reporting as you do now.

Reason I ask is that my family and I are with CIGNA and have a very high level comprehensive cover. Last thing I wanted to do was have to get extra insurance to meet some bureaucratic nonsense.

so you don’t have to use one of their listed ones on that website ?

if you apply for a new visa you have to provide the documents as asked. Health Insurance is now a requirement for the Non Immigrant O-A visa, if you apply for this visa then you have to show that you have it. You can change to a Non Immigrant O visa outside Thailand, but health insurance my be helpful in case of emergency. Somebody need to pay the hospiral in Thailand as they are not for free. Your husband can remain on the same visa or Extention of Stay which will be machted with your stay, also for him, health insurance my be helpful in case of emergency.

Sorry, but the prices of Insurance companies is something that I do not discuss. That is between you and your company. The rule for the visa is clear and you have to meet that requirement.

thanks Robert! Happy to get inpatient health insurance but I understand they also mandate outpatient coverage? Seems less expensive to pay out of pocket if the need arises
