I am on a non O visa which I just renewed. I don’t have a multi entry stamp and we are trying to plan a trip to Lao. Can I get a re-entry stamp driving across at Nong Khai or do I need to get it in Khon Kaen immigration where I do my visa stuff? Can I get it based on a date we are planning or do I have to go the day we are leaving?

Answer summary

If you are on a NON-O visa and need a re-entry permit for your trip to Laos, you cannot obtain it at the border crossing in Nong Khai. It is advisable to return to the Khon Kaen immigration office where you handled your visa renewal to purchase the re-entry permit. You can obtain the permit based on your planned travel dates, as the immigration office does not require you to go on the exact day of purchase.

They don't sell re-entry permits at the border crossing

you used to (pre-covid) be able to buy one a few km before the border at a small building but I don't know if it is still open 😕

Rather than risk you losing the extension because you can't get one I'd go back to the office where you got the extension and buy the re-entry permit there.

You can just make up dates you're traveling they don't care at all,
