Hi! I have applied for a DTV visa from Vietnam ( HCM). For personal circumstances I urgently have to get out of the country - does anyone have experience with leaving the country while waiting for the visa? Thanks.

There are plenty of cases where visas get approved after you leave the country, so don't worry

Yes I did. Applied in Hanoi. By the time I entered Thailand, it wasn’t approved until later on that afternoon. I left again 3 weeks later and activated when entering back. But...I might be one of the lucky ones to get it without an interview.

Anonymous participant 878 My Vietnam visa expires on June 3, so I only have one more working day of the embassy left before I have to leave Vietnam.

I would say if it’s an emergency and you need to go then you need to go. Especially if it’s family matters.

Don’t make it a big deal. If they not suddenly out of the blue require you to come in for an interview or demand a current new copy of all passport pages, how can they know? Maybe not travel into Thailand in the meantime could be on the side of caution. But even that they would very unlikely automatically know.

You risk your application being rejected

They can see on their system if you've entered Thailand. Vietnam also often asks for an up-to-date proof of life (i.e., showing a picture of you in a location in Vietnam with the date stamp). There is a risk that they do reject or cancel your application and you lose the fee. That's your risk.

In my application, which I did in my home country, during the interview the immigration officer couldn’t see anything. She thought it was my first time in Thailand and that I didn’t know anything about the country. She didn’t even seem to have access to my student visa history.

So because of that, I’m not sure if all embassies actually have access to passport stamps and immigration records.

ExcitingPhoenix5743 Yeah there have been various reports on what the embassy can see and not see in the immigration system. I think it's pretty certain London knew that a guy had returned to Thailand because they actually told him he had to return to get his visa. That case was published in here. I once asked a diplomat from another country what they could see on their immigration system and he said, "We can see everything at the embassy." Obviously not every country is the same. Seeing if someone has entered Thailand and seeing their whole immigration history are two different levels, I suppose.

pardon me, but you should NOT 🚫 have applied unless you planned on staying in Vietnam until the decision is known.

When did you submit your DTV Visa Application in Vietnam?

If you are returning to Thailand, how do you know that you may not be allowed to enter ?

Rules have changed recently.

If you have a recent history over the past 12 months of staying in Thailand using Visa Exempt Entry and extensions, you will have a problem entering Thailand.

Without added information from you, it's difficult to give you advice on your situation.

Good Luck 🍀

My concern was for your ability to enter Thailand.

FYI...the look back on visa exempt entries is 12 months... not the 2026 current year

Thankfully that's now not the problem.

I wish you success in getting the DTV visa. Monday and Wednesday of this coming week are Thai National holidays... I'm not sure if the Thai Embassy or Consulate in Vietnam will be closed.

thanks for editing your previous post, I was slightly confused by your advice for me to not apply only because I have a family matter for which I might have to leave Vietnam.

The family matter is not in Thailand, and this is something which is really hard to plan in unfortunately.

I have been in Thailand only for on month this year, without extensions. Same situation for the last years.

Anyways, I will try to figure something out. This post was just here so that I could figure out what possibilities there are for me. Most probably I will wait in Vietnam and hope for the things to turn out well.

Thanks again!
