Can I extend my 30-day language school visa in Thailand or do I need to do a border run?

Hi. Does anyone have any advice on a 30 day extension on a language School visa? My 1 year language school visa is ending and I need a couple more weeks to take care of some things before I leave. Can I apply for an extension at the immigration office? Or do I need to buy the single re-entry stamp, then exit at the border and come back in? Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend your 30-day language school visa, you need to first go to the Immigration office with a cancellation letter from your school. If your course is finished, you won't be able to apply for another Extension of Stay and will have to do a border run to obtain a new Visa Exempt Entry for 30 days.

First you go to Immigration with letter from school to cancel your Extension of Stay, than you can do a border run for a new Visa Exempt Entry for 30 days. If you course is finished you can not apply for another Extension of Stay.

You can only do two border bounces a calendar year, the choice is yours.

if you are on a 60 day (from Vientiane), and need 67 days, is it better to extend 30 days at immigration or do a border bounce? It seems because it's cheaper to go to Mae Sai, it's the better option, but I want to make sure.
