Can I enter Thailand by land with a DTV visa obtained in Vientiane, Laos?

I just received my DTV visa in Vientiane, Laos. Am I able to do the land border by bus for my first entry, or do I need to arrive by air? They didn't say anything, just handed me my passport with the sticker in it... no further instructions. If anyone could clarify, I'd appreciate it, Thanks

Oct 1, i made my 1st DTV entry by the minibus from Malaysia. No any questions about a kind of transport and entry point.

I got DTV in Vientiane as well. I took a round-trip train from Bangkok to Vientiane, and the officer stamped 180 days without any hassle or questions.

thanks for the detailed responses, I appreciate it. I'm going to Bangkok and planning to cross at the Friendship Bridge. First taking a bus to Nong Khai. Then take an overnight bus to Bangkok, or go to Udon Thani then fly, not sure yet. Probably spend a day in each town to explore a bit👍🏻

Anonymous participant Of course, if you want to explore these towns, it would make sense to catch a bus only to the first destination.

Nong Khai is nice, but might be more convenient to head directly to Udon Thani on the international bus, explore a bit then fly out (since the airport is located there; there's no airport in Nong Khai).
Paul *******
Anonymous participant Why the need to change buses? There's a Vientiane-Bangkok bus, should you be heading to Bangkok anyway.

If you decide to fly, you catch the Udon Thani bus.

The Nong Khai bus is only for passengers who's journey ends in Nong Khai.
Paul *******
The bus station, with services to Thailand is conveniently located in the center of town, specifically, right next to Vientiane center mall and across the road from the main market.

Sure, plenty of people have made Entry into Thailand at Nong Khai with their new DTV Visa Sticker bought at the Thai Embassy in Vientiane

(and countless visas of all types and people from around the world over the years with little to no problems....)

I've crossed into and out of Thailand through nearly every land border checkpoint the country shares with it's neighbors.

The only ones I haven't tried are the borders between Narathiwat/Yala and Malaysia, as they're located in dodgy areas, with the security situation on the Thai side quite worrying.

I also haven't tried the Phayao and Beung Kan crossings with Laos (though I've been to both, just haven't actually crossed over). I am sure I'll be crossing those in the relatively near future, especially once the new bridge in Beung Kan opens next year.

I was just about to comment on being some of the first to cross the new Friendship Bridge to be opened at Beung Kan–Paksan. As a side note, I have also crossed many of the Lao–Thai borders and find them quite fine and generally easy to cross....

The bridge construction is delayed; it was supposed to open end of this year, but now looks like it will be another 6-12 months.

No, it's on schedule to officially open 2025.... probably Songkran-ish

Also, don't trust Thai timelines. I am confident end of 2025 is more likely. Anyway, very few farang will be interested in this crossing unless you happen to live in Beung Kan.

@Paul ******
Compared to the other Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges, this one is way ahead of schedule! 🤣

I read sometime in 2025, but Songkran would be optimistic. On schedule would have been end of 2024 or around December, so it's definitely delayed.

Speaking of using the bus, depending on your destination inside Thailand, pick the right bus.

You can choose to catch a Vientiane (Khamsavath) to Bangkok train as well.

For buses, there are services from Vientiane to Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Bangkok.

The Bangkok bus runs overnight.

If you want to fly either to Bangkok or Chiang Mai/Phuket etc. you'll probably be flying out of Udon Thani or Khon Kaen.

Therefore, catch the appropriate international bus to one of these two cities and then take a taxi from the bus station (either Udon or Khon Kaen) to the respective domestic airport.

Obviously, to reiterate, a foreigner can't enter Thailand via a locals border crossing. Those are only for citizens of Thailand and the neighboring country.

However, such border crossings tend to be located in more remote areas anyway.

Simply look up which borders are international (Nong Khai-Vientiane, ie the 1st Friendship Bridge being one) and you'll be allowed to enter that way.

Who said it and where? Just curious.

Following.

Have you never been to Thailand before? Unless you're going to a country that doesn't allow foreigners to enter by land (Myanmar is one of the few) then of course you can enter by land through any international border crossing.

thanks for the reply. Yes I've been to the kingdom 5 times now. I thought I read that you need to arrive by air when you first enter with the dtv, but then couldn't find anything specifying when tried to confirm.
Paul *******
The only time foreigners were required to enter Thailand by air was during Covid.
Paul *******
Why? I've never heard of a visa that requires you to enter by air only.

Except for visas on arrival in certain countries that can only be accessed if you fly in, or in the case of Myanmar where foreigners can only fly in (land borders being closed) almost all other countries allow foreigners to enter by any international border, Thailand included.
