Good day, all. I am busy getting things ready for my move to HH in August. I'm comfortable with where I am at with the entire process at the moment and would like to thank all of you who have provided solid information in previous posts. My question relates to establishing a Thai bank account. Seems like all I've read is so far deals with electronic transfers of the required 800K Baht. I'm good with that but am curious if anyone has deposited a cashier's check (or a bank provided check) or a money order without any difficulties. Do Thai banks recognize these options?
Answer summary
The post asks whether Thai banks accept cashier's checks or money orders for establishing a bank account necessary for visa requirements. Responses indicate that foreign checks and money orders may not be recognized by Thai banks, which typically require verified bank transfers. Recommendations emphasize opening a Thai bank account after obtaining a Non-O visa and transferring the required 800,000 Baht through international money transfer services.

Unless you are in a large city like Bangkok small local banks do not understand a check that is in US dollars or UK pounds or Euros etc. They only understand Thai baht and will not do conversion or accept it. Highly recommend after you get your 90 day Non-O visa and arrive in Thailand you go to Thai bank and open 2 accounts then transfer the 800K thb you'll need for your 12 month extension of stay into one and leave it there, put monthly spending money into the second account. It is best to keep the bulk of your money in home Country bank and do international transfers to your spending account as you need. Also highly recommend Kasikorn bank. Definitely do not use Bangkok bank they are not falang friendly.

Thai Banks are expensive and hang on to incoming bank transfers for a longer time than necessary.

You must be able to handle online banking with your U.S. Bank while you are abroad. Then as soon as you have opened your Thai bank account, you have TWO options to transfer the required minimum of 800,000 THB into it: EITHER a direct SWIFT money transfer from account to account, OR you use WISE or REMITTLY or REVOLUT or Western Union, for a money transfer through either provider. Usually the transfer has to pass through the providers bank account before it gets forwarded to your Thai bank account

I paid for a hospital operation costing 320,000, with a Banker's draft obtained in advance as the daily limit on my Bangkok ATM card was 50K. (A small charge.)

Anything other than a FOREIGN bank transfer will be an issue. You must be able to PROVE that the funds were not originate within Thailand. "Cash" deposits, even as a CASHiers Check or MONEY order will probably not pass review of immigratoin. Even some bank transfers are questioned.

it's not a requirement for the funds to come from abroad for an extension of stay based on 800k baht

That depends entirely on your local immigration office leader

Richard Hornby No - it does not depend.

For the application to the 1-year extension of stay, if one has entered on a 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa and opened a Thai bank account, the transfer of the required minimum of 800,000 THB does not have to be coded as having come from abroad, there is no such rule.

Only somebody who enters on a tourist visa and applies for the change to the initial 90-days visa inside Thailand, must prove that the deposit came from abroad.

There is a clear distinction between these two different processes and in the past 25 years I have never heard any report that an Immigration asked for this proof if the account was opened after someone entered on a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa.

The reason? It is simple: you already proved that money in your home bank account when you applied for the Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa through the E-Visa online system of the Thai embassy or consulate

Brynne Burrough dont do this. Obtain your NON O visa based on retirement. establish a Wise account through the app.. Then fly to Thailand and get a bank account. Krunthai is recommended. Dont go to Bangkok bank.

International money orders are outdated. Cashier’s checks cannot go overseas. Talk to your bank before you fly out.

Brynne Burrough set up online banking if you haven’t got it. You can order fund transfer online while you’re in Thailand. There are many fund transfer ways available outside regular banking channels. Plan before you leave. Good luck.
