Bringing a Long-Term Supply of Prescription Medication into Thailand

I have a DTV and I'm traveling to Thailand in October for a year.

I take Atozet for cholesterol - one tablet a day. I'd like to bring a one-year supply with me (12 boxes of 30 tablets each). I will include a prescription, medical summary, and a letter from my treating physician.

From what I understand, you're normally allowed to bring only up to a 30-day supply of prescription medication into Thailand.

Has anyone here had experience bringing a larger supply of prescription medication for personal use? Is there a way to get prior approval from the Thai FDA to bring a one-year supply?

Thanks!
Answer summary
A user traveling to Thailand for a year is concerned about bringing a one-year supply of their prescription medication, Atozet, while understanding that the usual allowance is only a 30-day supply. They seek advice on obtaining prior approval from the Thai FDA. Several community members shared their experiences of successfully bringing in larger supplies of medication without issues, often suggesting the importance of having a doctor's letter. Some indicated that the medications might be cheaper and more readily available in Thailand.

If there's any doubt, I'd just declare everything you're bringing in. I did that, and Customs seemed surprised, but they were happy to check everything, and thanked me for doing so. Mine was a 90 day supply of 11 meds. After filling out their paperwork, they let me through. Of course, the list of meds from my doctor, and the tags on each bottle settled the matter handily. They kind of expect that geezers will be travelling with meds, so they're not surprised. I thought they were very pleasant. :-)

EagerSpinach479 It's only a guess on my part, but since none of the meds were pain killers (opiates), and since none of them were the kind that could be abused, I'm guessing that it speeded things up, though it did take about 15 minutes to line the bottles up and take a picture of each one, as well as shooting a copy of the prescriptions my doctor had provided, along with a short letter. I imagine it might have taken less time if I had brought fewer documents, so I just curled up on a chair after asking if there was anything I could do to help them. But Thailand is the land of smiles, and they even packed my meds in plastic sacks for me, after doing their photo session. Nice folks, these Thais. :-)

Surprisingly, many medications are cheaper here and are easily available at the pharmacy.

That said, I brought a year's worth of 5 meds with me and they didn't search my luggage or ask questions. I did have my prescriptions. And letter from the doctor in case.

I went to the pharmacy last month with several of my empty bottles with the prescription on them and they were able to give all of them to me.

KnowledgeableRaccoon5198 I'm not sure Atozet itself is widely available in Thailand - I think there are mainly generic alternatives. I can currently get the original brand at a subsidized price, paying only about 10% of the regular cost, so buying it in Thailand would be significantly more expensive for me.

I just asked Gemini and it appears it’s readily available in Thailand. It may be cheaper to get it here than your home country, it would be worth it to look into it a bit more.

But to answer your question, I’ve brought more than 30 days meds with a doctors note.
