Is it possible to apply while being on probation? (USA)
What kind of background check, if any is initiated?
Answer summary
The consensus among community comments is that applying for a visa to Thailand while on probation may be possible but could present complications. Some users suggest that background checks are not universally enforced, but caution that having a criminal record does affect the application process. It is recommended to wait until at least one month after completing probation to avoid potential issues, especially if the probation relates to serious crimes. There is also discussion about the risk of being flagged for being on probation if a background check is conducted.

First of all without a doubt I would not even attempt to apply until at least one month after you are off probation. Secondly if you have a felony for anything having to do with trafficking of drugs and narcotics, murder or attempted murder, or pedophilia, I suggest you don't even bother applying at all save yourself the expense, stress and waste of time.
You can definitely apply but whether you pass or not is another story. Though you said you still have a few months of probation, so no point in even applying as processing time is usually around a month. At earliest you’d want to apply a month before probation ends, but it might not be a bad idea to see it through to the end, especially if your record will be expunged after probation, just in case. To be fair, I didn’t have any background check I think when applying, but who knows if they’re conducting any checks themselves. Maybe not, or maybe yes. What’s safest is seeing it through to expungement if possible, or at least post parole, then applying. Of course, YMMV and you can apply more than once anyways.
Also, you could consider applying in Vietnam or something like that if you’re very eager to get to Southeast Asia after your parole is over. Not Thailand, but at least you’d be in the region.
Anonymous participant 777 People may laugh but I remember a guy telling us he was on a "List" in 2017. He was arrested in 2019 after the UK NCA asked the Thai authorities to act. It was in quite a few media outlets - the arrest. In many cases the Thai's cannot do anything if they do not know about it - Interpol is different.
Unless a specific embassy or consulate requires it there are no general background or criminal record checks. There have been a few posts with European Thai Embassies asking.
I'd advise to apply once you've completed but do be aware there is a good character section to the DTV it might be more useful to speak with an agent for their perspective and not Facebook.
Just a random thought, but if the case is that they do a check, I think they will flag you for being on probation. They are not going to sit there and investigate the day you arrive vs the expiration date. Secondly, Don't fudge with immigration. You know the saying about things being on your permanent record? Don't let them black flag you for something like this. Wait the 4 months.
Andrew Patron i agree. Thai official statements over the last month focus heavily on introducing screening of visa applicants. Context being national security. So not the best time to try and apply for a visa while literally on probation.
Anonymous participant they never used to do background checks but that might be different if your apply in your home country. Your better off waiting i think
Participante anónimo it matters tho, as foreing countries can tolerate some crimes while they won't tolerate others. You don't need to tell US, but for the government it will totally make a difference.
Anonymous participant I don’t understand how you wouldn’t think this is important , in my opinion. You offend against a child or woman you should lose your passport all together ! Let alone try to apply to go to another country like Thailand that’s an environment for these sick animals that prey on kids and women. Really bro ?!
