General bartending is a protected occupation reserved exclusively for Thai citizens.

However, you can legally work as a foreigner if you secure a high-end specialty mixologist role or a managerial position at an upscale establishment.

There are hurdles but I look at life if you don’t ask you don’t know

Good luck

Bartender is a proscribed job. That means a foreigner cannot be employed as a Bartender.

Peter Kortum I’m trying that also but a lot of them I found online require me to be in the U.S. to apply. Does anyone know of such jobs that can suggest them to me, I would greatly appreciate.

I recommend kicking back and relaxing … pay would hardly be worth your time if you could even get a job … go home and get a bartender job for 3 to 6 mths stay with your family and save the money to come back.

Otherwise you aren’t ready for a life in Thailand yet ….

Only my opinion 🤷‍♂️

You need to be a Proffesional with a, degree or Masters in English, AI,. Bar tending can be done by locals and you will be taking a job from them. I do not think you will get a working permit. Unless you want to find a job illegally but that could cost you. You will be deported and fined a large sum and you will be banned from Entering Thailand again.

I have to say that I've very surprised that someone makes the move to Thailand without it seems, knowing the most basic rules regarding work permits and permitted types of employment for foreigners. I'm not being rude but as it seems you haven't read up on the above, I suggest you do. Everything you need to know is freely available online.

Phil Wilson When we decided to move, we knew we could survive on a passive income such as interest and rental property but I started to feel bored doing nothing so I think about applying for a job. I’m not at a retirement age yet so I still want to work but it seems so hard to get a job and a work permit here.

FascinatingAvocado2293 It is difficult, there are not so many professions that you are allowed to follow and even those that you are allowed to do limit your activities to management. I understand that they are trying to protect Thai jobs but I think that people who are genuinely married to a Thai national should be allowed to work - especially if they are supporting a family. Don't get involved in anything that involves buying property. To do that you would most likely buy it in your wife's name and you'll have a hard time getting your money back if you break up ( there are other ways but they are very complicated). Starting your own business (Thai Ltd Co.) is probably your best route and if you can come up with a business that isn't public facing, you can do all sorts of things if you're not on view.

Best job you can get is a bar manager

But

Very few offer work permits to foreigners

You could open your own restaurant or bar using the Thai/USA Amity treaty…that would get you a work permit

You won’t be able to receive a work permit for a job in the hotel industry like a bartender. All those jobs that can easily be done by a Thai, are forbidden for you. This makes 99% of all jobs unobtainable for you

Andreas Mueller No it Isn’t. If you’re a skilled professional bartender you can get a job. It’s the company that hire who seek and need a skilled bartender who do the NonB visa because they seek a specific bartender/chief or any in that field.

If the company can not find it inside Thailand or among Thai they are freely to seek those from abroad.
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
@Magnus ********************
while this might be true that there are not so many "skilled" Thai bartenders out there in the free range, that job description is and remains forbidden for foreigners. Your hotel or company will need to employ a less skilled Thai bartender and give him proper training until he is "skilled". "Seeking them from abroad"??? Do you really think that a company or hotel will employ an U.S. American bartender to mix cocktails for the monthly minimum payment which is 50,000 THB per month and social security, when they can hire a Thai local for less than half of that ? How long have you been living in Thailand that makes you pull out of your nose fairy tales ? Have you ever seen an American bartender in any of the high-end hotels ?
Magnus *********************
Magnus *********************
Andreas Mueller that is true but the skill in any occupation comes from foreigners and has been like like this for hundred years. We do import skilled workers, we do import cheap workers. For those Thai who want to learn and maybe have possibility to go abroad to learn then it’s positive. As learn domestically in universities.

Ive read this a thousand times and it’s just stupid talk, any company who have tried find Thai worker for a position but not found can hire a farang instead.

I’ve done that and approved. I worked for years for a company that sell sand and managed construction in that company.

Ciaran Mc Neill there is no official list, but there is a description of jobs available at the Labour Office, where they will tell you the same as I do. A Farang will not get a work permit for the job of a bartender.

You won’t be getting a work permit for a bartender. Maybe a bar manger in a tourist area. Most I’ve talked to are here working illegally, IE on Ed Visas.

You could get a job at an international hotel but it’s not easy unless you have a very high skill set. They would have to apply for the work permit for you.

Sheen Travelling I have done. I stated two points that non Thais can do bar work (that doesn't necessarily mean Farang) many ASEAN nationals do so.

I also stated that this job pays approx 400-500Bt per day.

Both points are correct, so what's there to research. You fkin 🤡🤡

Munzie Munro The statutory minimum salary structures are determined as follows:

1. Requirements by Nationality

Foreign nationals are categorized by country of origin. According to the Thai Ministry of Labor, nationalities like the USA fall into the THB 50,000 baseline bracket.

***THB 50,000+: USA, Japan, Europe, Australia, Canada

***THB 45,000: Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan

***THB 35,000: Philippines, China, India, Indonesia, Middle East

***THB 25,000: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Africa

Andreas Mueller What on earth is this reply to? I didn't question the salary
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
Munzie Munro ASEAN member citizens can get such an array of jobs. Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and the Philippines are ASEAN, and their citizens are offered many exceptions for work inside Thailand. Over 3 million of these people are employed in Thailand. You cannot compare them to an US American. A hotel can employ a Filipina woman at the clubhouse piano and singing, but never an American for the same. Moreover, the minimum allowed wage for a philippine citizen is 35,000 THB, while for a US American, it would have to be 50,000 Baht

Munzie Munro you forget that a Thai bartender can be had for 20,000 Baht a month salary. So WHY on earth would a bar or hotel employ an American for more than twice of this pay ? (irrelevant the fact that they can't get a work permit for him)
Graham ******
Graham ******
Munzie Munro yes but who would pay the foreign rate when a Thai does the job at a lower rate?

Ant W Tailor you are not allowed to employ a U.S. American citizen for less than 50,000 THB plus social security. And ONLY in allowed professions. A bartender is not a permitted profession for a western foreigner . . . . "The minimum payment required for a British worker to legally obtain or extend a work permit in Thailand is 50,000 THB per month. This nationality-based threshold is enforced by the Thai Immigration Bureau for citizens of the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the USA"
