Answer summary
The post asks if it's possible to apply for a Thai DTV visa while in Japan on a visit visa. Comments reveal that while it's feasible to apply from Japan, there are specific educational courses like cooking and Muay Thai that are considered valid for the DTV. There are concerns among commenters regarding the eligibility and the bureaucratic processes involved, with several suggesting direct communication with the Thai embassy for clarity on course acceptance.

There is a subtle difference between a straight DYV and a Soft Power DTV. It’s whacked, but from what I was told talking to different agencies and an attorney, language classes are included in the Soft Power along cultural lines like cooking school is. At least that’s how I understood the situation; I may be wrong. Every embassy is a little different, btw, that’s why most people do theirs in Hanoi. But they could get a new supervisor and they could bring in entirely new rules. It’s ting tong!

I thought DTV was for digital nomads

Aussie-wa Laurie it is for working remotely and you can get the dtv via a soft power option

Well we all know it’s B/S… it’s just a easy way to stay here longer than tourist stays

Padraig Lawrence In the case of soft power yes but for the digital nomad there is not much else to choose from. I could be on a marriage Visa (12 years married) but then I am not legally eligible to work.

All the language classes in Pattaya are scam school. The only you are talking about his a cooking class. Trust me, you are not going to cook but stay home and chill. That school will take care of all the paperwork as long as they get paid by you.

Given the choice between the official Thai embassy who has the actual say in issuing the visa, and the business advertisement whose prime purpose is to sell you stuff … you are trusting the second one to be acting in your best interests, right?

You think what the advertisers imply in their promo is more likely to be true than the ones enforcing the laws?

Dan Morrison for DTV applicants from the UK the embassy isn't involved in issuing the visa. UK applicants need to apply online. Their online application is processed in the Bangkok offices of an outsource company called VFS. VFS issue the DTV electronically on behalf of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Contact the closest Thai embassy and ask directly! Don’t trust them!

Have you tried emailing the thai embassy in London and asking if this course would meet their requirements? They do respond to email questions

Graeme Mort yes, they informed only cooking and muaythai courses! However, the school says DTV visa for such a course is eligible!!

Manooch Tmi looks like you have a clear answer cooking or muay thai . The london embassy will determine what they accept so not worth pursuing other options. Choose one of these and you should be good to go

Manooch Tmi So you have a definitive answer from the embassy. They will be the ones processing your visa. What information are you expecting to get here? You think you can tell them:“But that dude in FB group said it’s possible!“ and them they‘ll go:“Oh yeah. In that case… here is your visa.“

Or what?

Manooch Tmi embassies have a lot of say in what they consider valid, if you're applying at the London embassy you're unfortunately beholden to whatever they say is the way.

It actually says Thai Soft Power related activities. I've seen some succeeding with these Hybrid courses and some being rejected. Generally you need a course longer than 6 months nowadays or you risk being issued with an METV rather than a DTV

thanks for your comment, the course is 6 months long!

which risks getting an METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa)

to be honest, Thailand should definitely abolish this soft power DTV. It simply makes no sense that one can obtain a visa valid for 5 years with a course that doesn't even last a year. It's no wonder, then, that these DTVs are being used to circumvent certain entry and residence regulations.

What are those cooking courses? Max 3 months. How could one get a 5 years DTV visa based on that? It is not an University.
