As a UK citizen, can I enter Thailand on the 60-day visa exemption and convert to a retirement visa in-country, or must I arrive with a Non-O visa obtained in the UK?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK citizen can enter Thailand on a 60-day visa exemption and may convert to a Non-O retirement visa inside the country if they have a Thai bank account with the required funds. However, it is recommended to obtain a Non-O visa before arriving in Thailand to simplify the process of opening a bank account and to avoid complications with immigration. Many users in the community emphasize the importance of securing a Non-O visa beforehand for a smoother transition.

I came to Thailand 3 years ago on 30day exempt ,I stupidly did not do research before ,went to immigration to be told I had to return to the uk to get non o ,I was then told I could apply in Vietnam, I was then told I could apply in bangkok ,went back to immigration and a different officer said no problem ,was issued with non o ,then retirement visa ,so it can be done but would recommend doing things right πŸ‘πŸ»

George Kattapuram yes, 3 years ago you were able to get a bank account opened on a visa-exempt entry or tourist visa, by using an agent. However nowadays this is nearly impossible since February 2025, when banks changed their policies. Now only a handful of agent are willing to touch this matter, for prices up from 60,000 THB for the "full package" (bank account, 90-days Non-O visa, 12-months extension)

You will need an onward flight within 60 days if you arrive visa exempt. I had a 90 day return flight when I entered in January and the IO said that I should have the proper visa type and that having a Thai wife won't save me next time. I could be denied entry.

Slightly off convo but im here on a non O Thai family (marriage). My initial non O expired after our rental house had a dodgy Chanote so they gave me a 60 day extension which puts our house built and we move in and reapply. My name is on the Chanote. Just in case it goes pear shaped due to paperwork, can I leave, go to say Vietnam they come back on a 60 day exempt and try and re appy again for my12 month extension off the exmpt stamp. I have a Thai bank account with 400k in since September so well seasoned.

DIY, no agent.

No, you cannot apply for the 12 month extension from visa exempt. You must first apply for the 90-day non-O visa. Only that can be extended for 12 months. You would need to find out if your immigration office supports converting to non-O inside of Thailand, as not all of them support this. Otherwise you would need to apply for the non-O visa again from a Thai embassy, whether it be in Vietnam or Laos or somewhere else nearby.

That what I thought. My Non O went pear shaped due to a dodgy landlord Chanote so got a 60 day extension so I can appy from the house we actually own and my name on the Chanote.

Im applying in a couple of weeks but if it goes pear shaped again I will leave and go to Vietnam and do another Non O from there. We will check at Cha Am immigration as Mrs is not keen to have a 3 week holiday in Vietnam on my own! Can't imagine why πŸ˜‚

the hiccup will be the Thai bank account opening. It costs around 2000 GBP (60,000 THB up) to get around the hiccup using an agent. Arrive on a 90-days Non-O visa, get your bank account opened (5000 THB if an agent has to help you) and it costs 1900 THB to get the 1-year extended stay permit based on retirement

And why wouldn't you want to apply for the 90 day Non-O before arriving?

Terry Bill McGinty because we have rented our house sooner than expected and I need to wait to evidence Β£20k in my bank account, as I just release some assets. Alternative I will rent some where and wait snd get my non-o

George Kattapuram the best route to take if you have the time is apply for the 90 day visa first, that saves so much hassle and cost when you arrive in Thailand. Then open up a Thai bank account, even though you have the funds I personally would leave the funds in your home country earning interest as the interest accrued is much more than the cost of using a Visa agent in Thailand. If you can transfer the 65K per month then there's no need to use an agent, however transferring a lump sum of 800,000 baht to a Thai bank actually works out to be the most expensive option as the money is sitting in the Thai bank earning next to zero interest, that money is best left in your home country then use the interest to pay a Visa agent

Terry Bill McGinty he needs twelve months of 65,000 THB transfers in order to use it to apply for the one-year Extension. So, for the first extension, he either has 800,000, THB in his bank account, or use an agent to front the funds for 5 minutes. However then in the second year he still must use the agent, again, because he violated the rules of keeping the funds in his account, the 12 months of transfers would not help him to get off the agent

I came into los last thursday on a Visa 60 day exempt and I will be changing to a Non O Retirement Visa. But I do already have a BKK bank account with the required 800k. So yes you can if you have the required funds in bank. Best of luck with your way forward mate πŸ˜πŸ‘

I changed visa two weeks ago. Already had a bank account too obviously. Got the 3 month stamp 15 days later.

It was pretty easy and straightforward.

George Kattapuram so, do you already have a Thai bank account? If not, apply for the 90-days Non-O visa in the UK before you wing your way here. Advantage: you can fly one-way, and you can get the bank account opened. Two things you cannot do when travelling without a visa

Bill Gilbert Lucky man you are. Very lucky! Normally the airline would not let you board the flight if you have no onward travel proof

Do you already have a Thai bank account? If not it's virtually impossible to open one on a tourism entry and you need money in a Thai bank to apply for a Non-O visa inside Thailand. Much better to get a 90 day Non-O visa before you travel to Thailand and then you can open an account and transfer in the required 800k baht, once it's been in your account for 2 calendar months you can apply for a 12 month extension of stay

Chris Nadon not really true, you can use a handful of agents to get around the bank opening scenario, but it is very costly
