Are there recent changes to back-to-back entries on Non-O visas in Thailand?

So I recently talked to someone that absolutely insisted that there's been recent changes to how many times you can enter on a Non-O back to back.

They are having some problems arranging their extension in country, and have apparently been told they can't just go out and come back in with another Non-O and try again to sort their extension.

I think it must have been a misunderstanding, but curious about other peoples experiences and what other people have heard lately.
Summary so far
The community is discussing the rules regarding back-to-back entries using a Non-O visa in Thailand. Some individuals assert there are no limits on exiting and re-entering Thailand with a Multiple-Entry Non-O visa, provided all requirements are met, while others share experiences of confusion and perceived restrictions. Issues arise when individuals attempt to obtain a new Non-O visa after having had extensions denied, possibly due to failing to meet necessary conditions or documentation requirements. The conversation suggests that while there may not be official changes, enforcement practices might vary, leading to misunderstandings.

My understanding is that unless you have a multiple re-entry stamp, each time you go out you need to reapply for a reentry prior to leaving the country. Did they do that? Have they completed their 90 day check ins whilst in the country?

If you hold a Multiple-Entry Non-Immigrant O visa, there is no limit to how many times you can exit and re-enter Thailand during its one-year validity period, provided you respect the 90-day max stay per entry and use a Multiple Re-Entry Permit if you are on an extended stay.

As a side note: Doing frequent same-day or back-to-back border hops can trigger extra questions or denials from border officers who suspect you are working illegally on a tourist pretense - so perhaps there is a problem with the appearance in the spacing / length of visits?

Mary Gerber No, they're struggling to get their extension of stay and is running out of time to get it sorted.

And someone has told them they will not be able to enter with new Non-O from abroad. Which is something I personally doubt, but I figured I'd ask around about it, since I am curious.

Marianne Holmen Ok so what I am understanding you to say is that they got their initial 90 day Non O (first visa?) but have not secured the annual extension for some reason have not been able to convert it over to the (first?) annual extension?

Is there something missing in their paperwork? Have they left their funds in the Thai bank at 800K for each person applying and have the bank statements showing the seasoned funds? Do they have a lease showing residence address that they plan on staying in with the owners ID?

Which immigration office are they using? (This may help if others have used the same office since each IO seems to require different things)

The problem doesn't sound like it is clear cut. You can leave and return multiple times, but only if you buy a re-entry permit for each departure, or buy a multiple re-entry permit. Without it, leaving Thailand will instantly cancel your initial 90-day Non-O visa and you have to start back and reapply.

If they are having problems getting their first extension (ours was easy and we did this ourselves - but we had all the paperwork required and met the financial requirements and used Hua Hin Immigration office) maybe they need to hire an agent because it sounds like there is something missing - the act of leaving and returning is fine as long as you get your re-entry permit prior to leaving the country - so it sounds like the drama isn't that but is that they have failed to convert this to an annual visa and without that annual visa conversion their visa ends at the end of the 90 day period (Your first 90 days is meant to give you the time required to complete the rest of the requirements like opening your bank, securing a permanent home etc and gather the documentation to apply and receive the annual extension).

OP
Mary Gerber The question is not about the extension or re-entry permits.

It's about peoples experiences of having problems or hearing about people having problems coming in with new Non-Os back to back.

Getting a Non-O, spending 90 days in Thailand, leaving, and coming back with another Non-O.

Mary Gerber Do multiple entry non-O visas still exist, other than the non-OX 5 year versions issued by select embassies in western countries? I thought the multiple entry options were sadly scrapped on January 1, 2025 when Thai consulates switched entirely to e-visas (again, the non-OX being the exception).

RadiantCamel1017 you cannot get a literal "multiple-entry" status built directly into a standard 1-year retirement extension of stay inside Thailand, but you achieve the exact same travel freedom by purchasing a multiple re-entry permit.

A nonO is issued at the embassy u apply at .....letting u into the country is the immigration officer u face at checkpoint ....does the officer denies your entry due to back to back nonO or he/she just look at your valid visa in your passport and stamp in ....or the e-visa system rejects your application

These people need to use a food agent! All this confusion, and uncertainty will stop! I use an agent, never had a problem in 3 years.

They had already had 2 non-O visas and you say 'back to back' so I'm assumiong left Thailand and immediately got another visa then I could understand that immigration wouldn't look kindly on issuing another as it would appear that they are trying to just keep getting them to avoid getting an extension but still stay in Thailand. You also say they are having problems getting the extension but not what those problems are however that might also impact on getting another non-O visa. The non-O visa is not intended to be used constantly but used as a path to getting an extension and I know several people being refused after several non-O visas being use to spend 3 months each year in Thailand and not getting the extension (they didn't want to stay longer than 3 months and didn't want to put money in a Thai bank and that was years ago so I don't think it's a recent change just inforcement of existing rules.

Malcolm Whitlock What is wrong with getting a new visa each time and not an extension?

Purpose of the visit as described by MFA is "To stay with Thai family residing in Thailand (more than 60 days)" and the validity of the visa itself is 90 days, so any stay between 60 and 90 days is valid.

Why should you be forced to go for an extension?

Nowhere it is mentioned that it is a path to getting an extension.

This is the same discussion as back to back on visa exempt or back to back entries on DTV.

Everybody should understand it is not meant to do that way, but there are no legal rules forbidding the immediate return, so when IO wants to stop this uninteded use, he has to find another reason to deny entry.

I'm just reporting what people I know were told when they had their application refused. I am no expert on Thai Immigration Law and I know that different Immigration officers interpret things differently and all I am trying to do is pass on information that I have received in the hope that it helps people.

I know you have to get an exit request before leaving country. If you just leave your visa is void when you come back. Is this the situation?

I know that you can leave before your Non-O expires, when you return after the expiration date, you need to start over with a new Non-O application while you are given an 60 day exemption. Assuming you already have 800k in Thia bank.

With a multiple entry extention do you have to get a re entry permit at the airport when going out

There are no Non-O multiple entry visas now since the eVisa site went global. You are probably on an Extension of Stay with a multi re-entry permit (two different things/stamps with two fees (1900B plus 3800B)) which is not a visa.

@Peter ********
No you don't.

You may have a re-entry permit. But the Non-O does not come with multiple entries.

If you have "renewed" your visa, you are also here on a extension of stay, no longer a visa.

Terminology matters.

Ron Pad No, this is someone struggling to get their extension based on Thai spouse done for various reasons. And Immigration has told them they won't be able to get a Non-O in another country and return with that, because they have done it too much ( twice )

Marianne Holmen Do you think telling people reading your original post might have liked to know this was about a Non-O for MARRIAGE issues ?

The VAST majority of questions around here about NON-O are about RETIREMENT issues and the subsequent permission to stay.

OP
Alan Rothwell Not sure how I see the relevance.

My question is about if anyone has been denied a Non-O outside of Thailand, or been denied entry with their Non-O, due to having had too many of them too close to each other.

But that might not have been too clear.

Marianne Holmen denial of a married extension could have a number of reasons. Must have to do with a lack of requirements and documents, like the marriage not registered inside Thailand, or 400,000 THB not having seasoned in the account for the required two months. That Immigration suggests they won't be issued another Non-O Family Visa from scratch, must have been a misunderstanding "lost in translation"

Graham Seal I think they're saying that even if they did get a Non-O, Immigration would deny them.

I don't think that has any hold, but I understand that they are worried.
