My flight arrives at BKK and by the time I get through customs, it'll be about 11pm. Are there likely to be anywhere open to change money into Baht at the airport to pay for a taxi? Cheers.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Upon arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) near midnight, travelers may find limited options for currency exchange. While there are exchange counters open before immigration and after customs, many competitive booths, such as SuperRich, close at 11:30 PM. ATMs are a viable alternative, but travelers should notify their banks about using cards abroad and avoid accepting currency conversion offers at ATMs to get better rates. It's often recommended to exchange a small amount for immediate needs and seek better rates in the city the next day.

If you use a.t.m make sure you do not accept a.t.m conversion

Always process without conversion

You will save 8%

I never use money changers, especially at an airport.. they rob you blind. Use an ATM and thereafter, always make sure that you keep enough notes for a taxi ride for your next visit ( to any country) it saves time and often money in the long term.

@Bolton ***
you forgot to add, that with the three money changers in the basement of the Suvarnabhumi airport, you will get the best exchange rate of the whole of Thailand, and a better rate than at any ATM

@Nongnuch *******
Thanks for that... but I rarely go down to the basement.... the taxis, and now the trains, are from higher floors. I’ll check next time.. thanks.I must admit that the charge for changing money from an ATM has been steadily rising and you must be very careful with it. At Don Mueang recently it was 300 Baht with a maximum withdrawal of
*****
baht ... a 3% charge on top of a bad exchange rate.... but it’s still usually better than most airport money changers.

It’s about time that the maximum amount from an ATM was increased to 15,000 Baht.

Just get taxi man to pull over at change place that's what I did

Never exchange more than 50 dollars from airport and another thing you can take BTS train , in 100 baht you will be in Sukhumvit or any other area of Bangkok. Once you reach your hotel you can exchange your money from Superrich or other official banks of Thailand, you can get best rate.
Lee *****
Just convert your American dollars as soon as possible $50 is enough to get you into the city but better exchange rate currency exchange places are all over the city banks are not licensed do currency exchange

@Lee ****
wrong .many banks do .

Stick your car in the ATM

Use the ATM. Better rates.

Change your local currency at home and take a small amount of Baht (5,000) enough for one night, then the following day you'll get a much more favourable FOREX at your resort or city.

Atm

I would take enough Baht with you to get you through the first day and save you worrying about a cashpoint at that time of night. Then withdraw the max amount so your not backwards and forwards to the cashpoint incurring charges each time. That’s my plan for April! Have an amazing time.

well, there are money changers open in the transit area, before the Immigration, at this time, however their exchange rate is really bad. Compared to the SuperRich rate in the basement, you will get 4 Baht less for your Dollar. . . . well, the basement money changers close at 11 pm, and as the Meter-Taxi to downtown will cost anything between 300 and 500 Baht, we can recommend you need to exchange a maximum of 30-40.- USD and find a good money changer in downtown the other day

There should be before immigration, duty free too.

After customs, follow the signs “Floor B” and “Airport Rail Link” all the way down to the basement of the Suvarnabhumi airport.

Right across from the train to downtown Bangkok, there are THREE moneychangers. These three money changers in the airport basement unfortunately for you, are open from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m

NEVER, I say NEVER, change in the upper floors of the airport or inside the transit area. The difference is 3-5 Baht compared to the exchange rates in the basement.

These three moneychangers are: Happy Rich, SuperRich and Kasikorn. The SuperRich rate is the best you can get, in the whole of Thailand

If your credit card allows provision free withdrawals on ATM’s abroad, keep in mind that the daily spot rate of a VISA or MASTERCARD actually is a VERY GOOD rate!

Every Thai ATM will charge a 220.- Baht ATM fee. You need to draw as high an amount as possible, to spread this fee across a high amount. Most ATMs allow 20,000.- THB on a single withdrawal, the yellow ATMs (Krungsri Bank) allow a 30,000.- THB withdrawal

ATTENTION: if the ATM offers you to see the exchange rate on the screen, NEVER agree, always press NO. This is called “currency conversion” and it is –sadly – a legal scam and common on ATMs in touristic areas.

Sometimes this question shows as a negated question, that’s when you have to press “YES”

Why not exchange in your own country enough for taxi ?

No....bangkok airport is like a ghost town after 5pm....and totally empty at weekends so best find another destination that would want to change...any other airport in the world would do as swampy is the only airport so quiet!!!

this is not helping at all sir. Maybe you are confused with the kind of answers on other "Bangkok expats" pages, bug here, we try to help each other.

I use grab to pay with the credit card. There are some atms also.
Darin ********
As someone said grab, if you don’t know down load the grab app and link to your spend account ( grab its like Uber but better) use for lots of things from car rides and rental to food delivery and can’t charge you tourist rates as is pre booked and paid before service is provided.

Airport basement best rate there superrich

Your best option is to use the AOT official car service this way you pay by card and they are not going to rip you off.

...10 feet past immigration officer is the first booth you see
JC ***************************
Yes there are exchange houses (from the 2 major banks) just before immigration and outside after leaving customs and remember the taxi has now a surcharge of 50 baht on top of the meter as well as another surcharge for luggage which many drivers do not add but if they do just remember it is clearly written on the notice board where you get a ticket for the taxi and then it course the tollway fees for which you need to pay
Baljit *******
Take it with you from your home country, do not try to convert at the airport
Linda ******
Grab via credit card payment.
Lincoln *******
I agree, setup grab on your phone and go cashless
Bart **************
The competitive ones in the basement will be closed by then, but normal ones are open. Just exchange some small amount, and go to a competitive one in town the next day.
Chris *******
Superich closed at 23:30.. will be short, best way is ATM.. you ll pay for fees.. but not sure any exchanges' counter still open at that time
Dirk **************
@Chris ******
and there are plenty of ATMs in the airport, the last ones (outside) where you exit for the taxis.
Nick *******
Super rich gives the best rates . Google says they close at 11.30pm .

Go to the lowest level of the airport and then left down the ramp

There are ATMs you can use. Just make sure to let your bank know you're going to use your cards in Thailand.
Charles ******
@Steve ******
but the point is every ATM in Thailand charges 200-300 THB ATM fees for withdrawal. Not a common practice in other SEA countries
Nongnuch ********
@Charles *****
in order to avoid misinformation, the ATM fee is 220.- THB. That's why one should withdraw a high amount, like 20,000 THB or 30,000 THB, to spread the fee acrossa high amount. The exchange rate of a credit card at an ATM actually is a very good rate
Steve *******
@Nongnuch *******
the rates are decent but Thai banks give you way less than online solutions like Wise.
Pete **********
@Steve ******
its 220 baht for wise card withdrawals at atm also.
Steve *******
Nongnuch ********
@Steve ******
the WISE exchange rate at which the money is received, is marginally less than the exchange rate of the orange or green SuperRich or Siam Exchange. . . . To change inside a Thai bank is not recommended, because it means you are shopping with your card, this might cost a provision, and the bank is setting the rate. . . . . The rate outside the Thai bank at their ATM is much better, because it's not the Thai bank that sets the rate, but your credit card provider (VISA or MASTERCARD) and this rate is actually a very good rate!
Shy-Anne **********
@Charles *****
who cares about 200-300 THB at that hour. Bro needs to get to his room and sleep. I’m sure he can take enough money so he doesn’t need withdrawal the next day.

I also agree with what others are saying about getting the app Grab super handy!
Ken ***********
@Shy-Anne *********
bolt is cheaper than grab

@Ken ******
cool, thanks!!

the point is that OP needs cash to pay his taxi.
