Help from Canadians please, went to the bank today to get a draft for our visa application. The manager asked us to make sure the banks in Thailand accepted CAD Drafts. Thank you for info! π
Answer summary
A user is seeking advice on whether Canadian bank drafts in CAD will be accepted by Thai banks for a visa application. Various commenters suggest that using an international wire transfer or services like Wise is preferable due to issues with drafts being held for verification. They note that international wire transfers are more reliable as proof of funds than a bank draft. Additionally, when applying for a NON-O visa based on retirement, funds must be deposited in a Thai bank account, and it's essential to show the amount for at least two months before visa extension.

Wire transfer or best option for best exchange rate - use Wise. Almost everyone uses Wise.
Barath Faust 1/ Set up your Wise account. 2/ Connect both your (payee) home account and your (receiving) Thai account. 3/ After it's all set up, do a small test transfer to confirm funds transfer without any issues.
It is an online banking option. For example ,I have accounts withCIBC and make these type of transfers, no fees and funds are in your Thai bank within a couple of days
the vast majority, perhaps if not all Canadians, who are planning to get a Thai Immigration Extension of Stay based on Age over 50 years old inside Thailand at their local Thai Immigration Office,
would do an international Wire Transfer from your Canadian bank account to your Thai bank account
Now, performing/processing that international Wire Transfer could be a direct international SWIFT Wire Transfer directly from your Canadian bank account into your Thai bank account
or, alternatively, one could use an intermediary online App/Website service, such as Wise, Remitly, or similar online App/Website/service to reduce costs/fees/charges, or perhaps for reasons of arbitrage to get a better foreign currency exchange rate on international bank transfer(s) between Canada and Thailand
an international wire transfer is essentially a Deposit into a Thai bank account and international wire transfers are much more conclusive evidence and proof of foreign source of funds than a paper, physical foreign bank draft cheque
Also, there would be many necessary, lengthy verifications a Thai bank would need to perform to verify any potential foreign bank draft cheque
Barath Faust fair enough. But I use Wise at least 2x monthly for the last 6 years. And to 3 main countries, Thailand, Mexico and Philippines. Here would be cost of sending 800k right now. Compare this number to the quote you receive for Swift and your wife may see the light
Get a Wise account then transfer when you get your Thai bank account or transfer from your bank to your Thai bank after you get your Thai bank account. But Wise will have a better exchange rate.
What visa are you applying for? Non-O based on retirement? Are you applying in Canada? If so you can just show the money in your Canadian bank account, then you will have to transfer 800k to a Thai bank account in your name only within 30 days of entering Thailand.
Barath Faust suggest you look into Wise, or Swift transfer to get the 800k into your Thai bank. If you don't already have a Thai bank the first thing you need to do is go to immigration and get a residence certificate and a Thai SIM card because you have less than 30 days to open up a bank account deposit the money and let it season for 2 months to be eligible for your 1 year extension application. Make arrangements for transferring the funds, not getting a bank draft.
Oh dear, we need to show amount in account for at least 2 months before we can extend our visa, unless bank statement reflects the date we deposited the draft. Eventually, did they accept the TD draft?
