What are the requirements for proving funds when entering Thailand without a visa?

Am I correct in thinking that with a walk in visa I am required to show 20000 baht - can this by done by showing an updated  Thai bank book or does it have to be cash in the pocket ? also what else is required and how many days should I expect to be given ?
