TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the high cost of sending a letter from Chiang Mai, Thailand to the USA (1,500 THB), while contrasting it with the much lower cost of sending mail from the USA to Thailand (only a couple of dollars). The comments suggest that the user might be comparing different services (like DHL and the Thai post office) which have differing price structures. Users recommend using the regular Thai postal service to avoid high costs and mention that sending regular mail to the USA is generally inexpensive.

1,500 seems like EMS. Tell then you'll use the cheapest one without tracking number (if that's the one you're looking for).

Regular postage from Thailand to USA is under $5 for the envelope you described. Go to a Thai postal Outlet not a outlet that deals in different couriers. I did it took less than a week to get to Canada

I live in in a somewhat remote-ish location in the north. A local took it to the post office for me. Mae Taeng, I think.

A standard envelope containing another envelope containing a check that I couldn't cash in Thailand == ฿320 to Wisconsin.

It took about one month to arrive.

You're comparing DHL to the post office. If you went to DHL in America and sent something to Thailand, it would be much more expensive. Why didn't you go to the Thai post office? That would have been much cheaper.
