Why do some people accuse others of abusing the DTV in relation to soft power classes?

Hello! Genuine question (so please mature & polite answers only pleasešŸ™).

I am preparing to move to Thailand at the begining of next year and will be applying for the DTV early in advance (I have my reasons for this but yes I know the clock starts ticking when the visa is granted not when you first enter)...

What I have noticed on this group, whilst I have found it very very helpful, is a lot people being mocked and patronised. I thought the whole point of forums and FB pages, was to help people, not a way to offload frustration & impatience at people from behind a screen? I personally have gained a lot from this group and am grateful for it, but I see a lot of people being quite brash with people who ask questions, and it's sort of not surprising so many people post anonymously.

If people post a question and have clearly done no research or couldn't be bothered to find the information themselves online or didn't try the search function, then I completely understand this would grow tiresome on the "veterans" of this page..... but my question is:

-why do people get accused of abusing the DTV when it comes to the soft power classes? I am asking this genuinely as I will be applying under the soft power category and would like to understand if I am missing something so I can reduce my risk of being rejected.

I have more than 500,000THB in my bank account (balance has been there for over 6 months), and I will be booking a 6-mnth Muay Thai membership with a reputable gym (already arranged)..... but why do I see so many people accusing posters of taking the DTV for granted by saying things like "you're getting a 5-yr visa for just a few months classes", etc, etc...

No one in the history of ever has surely booked 5 years worth of classes in advance before even getting to Thailand?! 😳 You wouldn't even do that in your home country, let alone a foreign country (whether you've visited 20 times or never)?!

Nowhere in the requirements does it stipulate you must be enrolled on a 5-yr long course... and the DTV is just an extended tourist visa, so surely the officers who process the applications will know you must be supporting yourself somehow and won't be taking classes for the full 5-yrs, otherwise the "entry requirements" would be different?!

Am I missing something?

I intend to actually attend my classes and am genuinely interested in practicing Muay Thai, but there's no way I would commit to 5 yrs upfront, and I can't imagine anyone else would either because so much can happen in that time.

I have prepared a good cover letter and meet the requirements, but there is a lot of scaremongering online, and a lot of people accused of abusing the generosity of the DTV and I'm confused why if the requirements are already laid out...

If someone could shed some light and share some comments, I'd be grateful... but please there's no need for narkiness or condescending - we are all learning and all had to start somewhere, and my question is genuinešŸ™

Many thanks 😊

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is seeking clarification on why many in online communities accuse applicants for the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) under the soft power category of abusing the system. They have met the financial requirements and intend to genuinely engage in Muay Thai classes but are confused by the skepticism directed towards others who might not attend classes after acquiring the visa. Several comments suggest that skepticism arises from past experiences where applicants paid for classes they never intended to attend, leading to concerns about visa abuses. Despite this, some responses support the poster, affirming that as long as they meet the requirements, they are valid applicants.

You’re right!!

From what you’ve shared you’re an excellent applicant and if you have a good cover letter and meet all the requirements (6month course minimum is best) then just apply and good luck!

Thailand allow and approve applicants for this visa with a 6 month course, so no matter what the aggressive ones on here say.. you’re abusing nothing!

You can't be like "moving" here, it's still a tourist visa, albeit a long-term one and with an unclear future..

As well as having the 500k baht in the bank it is increasingly asked how you intend to support yourself for the 5 year duration of the visa if applying using soft power. Think carefully how you respond if asked

A lot of these guys are over the age of fifty, have too much time and money on their hands, have lived boring square lives in the west and now have a Thai wife or gf and are basically immature emotionally with limited life experience.

On top of that, most of them drink a fair amount of alcohol which tends to make them feel less inhibited and less emotionally sensitive. But in general they are mostly stunted emotionally with limited life experience and larger egos with white privilege dripping from their newly acquired ability to have some access to beautiful women.

Because 90% of the people that book classes for soft power are never even going to see that school, let alone attend a single class. And some of the classes are only like 4-5 classes across 6 months, which hardly necessitates a 5 year visa. This is the reason many people think things will tighten up at some point, like requiring proof of ongoing courses or attendance when re-entering after the first 180 days.

Everyone has an opinion…this is one of the groups that is actually not as bad as some other Thailand groups. But everyone has their reasons for their actions. I post anon on here bc I flew here the day after I quit my job and didn’t want anyone from my past employer to try obtain info. And as far as the soft power option, do whatever you want to do. I paid for 9 months of Muay Thai and have been attending classes 1-3 times a week depending on how I feel. Theres people who never step foot in the gym but that’s once again, their life, their choice! Good luck to you on your DTV adventure!

There's a lot of bitter people on here who want the soft power option closed. Just ignore them.

will see I’ve got the best of all SEA you obviously haven’t been in Thailand that long so you can’t see what’s happening look at what there doing to exempt stamps now you really think 2 years down the road a immigration officer is going to stamp you in for 180 days because you took a class 2 years ago ,I guess your very young and have a lot to learn about staying in other countries

Welcome to Thailand, the land of smiles! Yes, many people apply for soft power and pay for their activity and never show up. I think that’s a shame.

We are in our second year and are still continuing with our Muay Thai lessons ļæ¼. This is not required, but a complete pleasure.
