Why did immigration deny me a return this year, and can I extend my stay?

I visited from early March to early May on the 60 day tourist Visa and stayed exactly 60 days. I returned again on July 14th planning on staying only 30 days as indicated on my Thai Arrival Card. Planned departure of August 12th. Upon arrival, immigration gave me bit of a hassle even after showing return air itinerary. He told me I would not be able to return again for the rest of the year? But, then proceeded to stamp my US passport with visa stamp with expiration date of Sept 11th? First question is why would I not be allowed to visit again later this year? Second question is if I decided to extend this trip for a week, would I be ok? Would I need to update my Arrival Card?
Answer summary
The user faced issues when re-entering Thailand with a tourist visa after previously staying for 60 days on two occasions earlier in the year. An immigration officer informed him he might not be allowed to return for the rest of the year due to excessive tourist visa usage, even though he received a visa stamp valid until September 11. The discussion emphasizes the challenges of recurrent tourist entries and the importance of understanding visa rules, including potential limits on the number of entries per year.

Amazing. Back in the ‘good’ old days I entered several times a month for weekends from Singapore and never got questioned.

assuming he had no prior visits. We don't know if he did or not

yes, I think so, too. Because after accumulated visa-exempt stays of only 60 days within a one-year period, why would he not have received another 60-days stamp, instead he got pulled aside? There must be more to the story

Are you confusing visa-exempt entry with actually having a tourist visa? Did you really have a single entry 60-days tourist visa or did you enter using the visa exemption?

While you only accumulated 90 days on touristic entries until now, the problem is that on your second entry, the officer calculated 60+60, despite you showing that on your second stay you would only be in Thailand for 30 days.

Normally one should be able to spend up to 157 days of visa-exempt holidays in Thailand within a 1-year period.

You spent 90 days visa-exempt until now, that's why I do not understand why you would not be allowed one more 60-days visa-exempt entry, bringing the total visa-exempt stay to 150 days within a one-year period. Normally 150 days on touristic entries are NOT YET a "misuse of touristic entries".

You enjoyed the bad luck of meeting a very strict Immigration officer.

A third visa-exempt entry within a one-year period is now out of question, and even on a “real” 60-days tourist visa, your chances are slim, because you obviously now got “flagged” in Immigration’s Central Computer.

Take it with a pinch of salt and come on a visa that fits the purpose of your stays. What you write into your TDAC card is absoluitely irrelevant, what actually counts are the entry stamps and the total number of touristic stays.

Try buying a visa instead of free stamps

Your arrival card is irrelevant, the visa waiver stamp is everything.

Basically you get to come twice a year on free tourist entries, the first time you can get a 30 day extension, the 2nd time they will more than likely give you just a 7 day exemption, this started February this year. Just a FYI make sure you keep checking they voted yes to eliminate the 60 day tourist to a 30 day one, once they officially announce it then 15 days after that it will be only 30 days

This post may be a good opportunity for me to share my thoughts. If you look at the global immigration situation starting around the time of Covid, and perhaps a bit before, there was a great global migration. Combine that with the liberalization of immigration policies to spur visitors (like Thailand) many countries were simply overwhelmed with people who came and stayed outside of the rules. Certainly, other factors were at play. Today, we are seeing an immigration backlash in Europe, the US, and here locally in Thailand. My suggestion is to make the effort to study the immigration policies of the country and use them to your advantage, but don't try to bend or ignore them.

You had 3 60-day stamps already, you can live in Thailand for a maximum of 180 days in a year on tourist visa. Also if he warned you then he is going to put you on a watch list. Next entry will denied on tourist visa .. if you love Thailand take DTV

Ryan Sanders he only accumulated 90 days on touristic entries until now. The problem was that upon his second entry ( I guess he meant he came visa-exempt, he did not enter on a tourist visa) the officer wrongly calculated 60+60, despite he proved that his second stay would only be for 30 days. The officer clearly violated Immigration's own approach. One should definitely be able to spend up to 157 days of visa-exempt holidays in Thailand within a 1-year period. The problem is if the next officer also calculates 60+60+60, regardless of how long he actually intends to stay, he already is over that "invisible" limit of 157 days

Greg Alexander from what i see he consumed more than 60 days that is why another 60 days stamp is not possible

Probably he spent more visa-exempt days in 2025 and didn't tell us

Ryan Sanders his post says he had one trip arriving in March, prior to his current stay. That’s two stamps not three.

I think possibly you are confusing visa exempt entry with actually having a tourist visa. Did you really have a tourist visa or did you enter using the visa exemption program? Either way now immigration is going to look at how much time you're spending in Thailand so you should probably look into getting a proper visa for any future trips.

You were stamped in until Sept 11th because all visa-exempt entries currently still get 60 days. It is not a visa stamp, as you arrived without a visa and entered visa-exempt. Generally, the accepted unwritten guideline is 157 days max for visa-exempt entries in one calendar year, and as you have the option of extending the current entry by 30 days, that is almost max. If you have a history of staying long-term in Thailand without a visa, then this would show on your file when the IO swiped your passport

You can enter again but would require a visa that isn't a tourist visa. Extension doesn't matter

Forget the arrival card. It has nothing to do with any of this.

You entered Thailand 2 times as a tourist in quick succession. You've been warned that you've spent enough time in Thailand as a tourist this year, and if you return they will not consider you to get a legitimate tourist. They have been cracking down on this recently.
