Has anyone else noticed how in the last few years there have been a dozen or so companies that make single serving cups of ice cream? Good quality too..It seems everytime I turn around, I see a new company doing this…some examples include ete, iscoop among others. Many restaurants seem to have their own brand often as well. Almost like there is a big company that makes these ice creams and private labels for different establishments.

TLDR : Answer Summary
In recent years, the market for single-serving cups of ice cream has surged in Thailand, with numerous companies introducing high-quality options. Discussions suggest this trend may be attributed to a rapid proliferation of brands, mirroring the behavior seen in other sectors, such as bottled water. Some community members speculate about the presence of larger manufacturers in Southeast Asia who supply smaller brands, while others discuss the influence of successful products prompting copycats in the Thai market. Notable mentions include local ice cream companies like Chomthana, which produces a variety of flavors and private label options.

In fact there are some huge companies that make trainloads of ice cream for dozens of companies.

Check out Blue Bunny in Lemars, Iowa USA.

these companies are making ice cream for Thai companies?

No, it is simply a USA company and business model I am familiar with. But a quick google search confirms there are similar massive factories in SE Asia producing ice cream not only for their own brands, but smaller boutique brands as well.

For example, one company proclaims, "We create delicious ice cream. In order to produce quality ice cream, we use local fresh fruit as well as imported raw materials. Our unique Thai flavours include Durian, Mango, Ruammitr (mixed fruit) Coconut Cream, Milk Tea with Pearl and Pandan with Natade to name a few. We manufacture under our own house brand ‘Cremo’ and ‘Iberri’ for domestic and international markets, wholesale and retail. Chomthana also produces OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) or Private Label Ice Cream. Chomthana has 4 main ice cream production lines – extrusion, stick, cone and bulk ice cream. We also produce our own ice cream cones for wholesale and retail purchase."

I’ve seen that one, they were pioneers I think, sort of the first small cup ice cream aside from wall’s. It’s not bad, they kind of seemed to pave the way for the 15 or 20 or so different flavors all the companies seem to have.

it’s an observation on Thai business and what current things are trending. If you aren’t interested , fine, but others might find noteworthy, there are plenty of people on this forum who have food related businesses... If it’s not of interest to you, simply scroll on by.

Jo Clemente Ok, I'm sorry if I sounded defensive. It's hard to read tones on these forums. Keep an eye out and you will start to notice how many different brands of single serving ice cream there are and most of them are really quite good, a step up from walls...

I guess you haven't seen how Thainnovation works. Someone has success with something and then a thousand copycats jump in with nearly identical products. I used to design promo materials for the Flight of the Gibbon. Within a week of any new design all the competitors would copy them nearly exactly

spot on. My ex opened a shop selling 2nd hand clothes and was doing really well. Within 5 months there were 4 new shops, on the same street, doing the same. Of course not enough business for everyone so she was forced to close.

@Euan *******
do you really think your ex was the first person to sell 2nd hand clothes in Thailand? Every city has markets full of shops selling second hand clothes.

no. But you're completely missing the point

I don’t think that is what he is saying at all… he’s saying she had the idea to do it in that area and everyone jumped on the bandwagon…

I get that. And I have no idea how well a business can protect it's IP here

Franchises by the sounds of it

that’s what I’m thinking. There is one big company that makes the ice cream and the franchises it out and each franchise uses their own label etc etc.

Great conspiracy theory😝

No, its just they all seem to be the same 15 flavours and similar packaging. Every time I go out I seem to encounter a new "brand"...I'm simply wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing. It would be an odd thing to make a conspiracy theory up about, but hey, stranger things do happen...!

Thais do not innovate. They see a successful idea with a lot of customers and they copy it exactly. If people go where they saw the customers for the flavors that business had, then they will make the same flavors because that's what they saw draw customers. The problem is that the customers are the same. They will just look for the same flavors and never want to try anything new.

there’s a lot to be said about that. For me though, what is impressive is how fast it happened. It started with one company and now it’s seemingly just saturated the market and the last three restaurants I went to had a their own brand represented but with the same style freezer, same flavors and virtually same cup design, just a bit tweaked Also, most of these ice creams are pretty decent, so I’ve just been impressed with the speed in which the copycats have taken hold of the product.

it’s the 5G phone towers that are responsible. That’s why I always wear my tin foil hat to restaurants. That way you get two scoops 😝😝
