What should I do if denied entry to Thailand on a DTV visa due to insufficient documentation?

This post contains only factual information regarding an incident that occurred on March 28, 2026.

Please understand that the text is long, as I have tried to describe the situation objectively and in detail in chronological order.

We are a married couple who have been living in Thailand for about 1 year and 6 months on a DTV visa.

We have no history of overstaying, and this incident occurred during our fourth re-entry into Thailand.

(We arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on the night of March 28.)

Except for one land crossing through Laos, we had always traveled back and forth to Korea by air, and we had never been asked to provide any documents before.

This time, we went to Korea for 4 days and returned by plane, but we were denied entry at immigration.

We had completed the TDAC in advance and had printed copies of our DTV visa documents.

The immigration officer looked at our documents, pressed a yellow button, and stopped both me and my husband.

We were told to wait briefly on the side, and after a short while, a female staff member approached us and guided us elsewhere.

We were taken to an interview table, where we were asked what type of DTV visa we were using.

We answered that we were visiting as REMOTE WORKERS (working from home).

She then asked us to provide proof that we were still working for our company.

I immediately showed my employment contract from when I first joined the company in 2023.

(The contract had no fixed end date, which is common in Korea, so the contract period section was left blank.)

However, she sighed and said the contract was too old, and requested a more recent document from 2026.

I explained that my company does not renew contracts periodically, but she shook her head.

I then showed her my work history through a messaging app, demonstrating that I have been continuously working for several years.

Despite this, she asked, “How can we confirm that you are still earning money?” and requested my payslips.

I do have those documents, but I did not know they were required at immigration, so they were stored on my computer at my home in Thailand.

I explained that I could show them if I were allowed to go home, but she replied, “You can’t.”

She then handed us two documents titled “Passenger Statement Form” and told us to fill them out.

After completing the forms, the female officer conducted another interview.

(It seemed like she was recording us with her phone camera, which was placed in front of us without explanation.)

She again requested proof of income, and I said I did not have it with me at the moment.

I showed her my company’s business registration document from my phone and explained that I didn’t know these documents were required for entry since I already had a visa.

She responded that having a visa does not mean you can enter without supporting documents.

I then asked if I could call my company immediately to request my contract and payslips and asked her to wait.

She then asked about my husband’s occupation.

My husband is a programmer and is currently planning a business, but he is not the main source of income.

We explained that he currently does not have income as he is preparing to establish a company in Korea, but she did not accept this explanation and shook her head.

While I was calling my company, I again asked her to wait, and she then sent us to a waiting area next to the interview desk without any explanation.

I assumed this meant we should find the documents, so I searched my phone extensively and managed to locate my mobile banking records, showing that I had been receiving a salary from the same company for the past 3 years.

She nodded slightly upon seeing this, but then suddenly requested my husband’s payslips as well.

However, my husband is on a dependent visa as the spouse of a DTV visa holder, so he was not required to prove income during the visa application process.

We had submitted our marriage certificate and my financial proof only.

As explained earlier, he had no income documents to show.

When he said he could not provide payslips, she showed visible frustration and gestured for us to return to the waiting area.

I did not understand why my husband’s income was required, so I asked why we needed to submit this.

At that moment, another female staff member (who had initially guided us to the interview table) came over and asked what was going on.

I told her that I had found the income records they requested and showed them to her.

She nodded and gestured for us to sit.

Soon after, another person came, confirmed that the passports belonged to us, and took photos of our faces.

We were then asked to follow a man.

We took an elevator and were led through a narrow, dark corridor into an office area.

There, our faces were photographed again, and we were made to wait outside the office on chairs.

Again, no explanation was given.

After waiting for a long time, two flight attendants approached us and suddenly informed us about purchasing return tickets to Korea.

I asked why we had to return to Korea, and they responded, “Weren’t you given any explanation?”

They said they would check and come back.

When they returned, they explained that the reason was “insufficient documentation.”

I said that I could now provide proof of income and that I could obtain a new employment contract shortly if given time.

However, they said, “It’s too late. You have only one choice — go back to Korea.”

When I tried to ask further questions, they said they were not immigration officers and could not help.

I was extremely frustrated and said that although I wasn’t blaming them, it was hard to understand how we could be denied entry simply because we were late in providing documents that were requested suddenly.

They said they were not certain but suggested two possible reasons:

First, frequent visa runs — especially returning to Thailand after very short stays (1–3 days) in another country.

(However, I hold a DTV visa, which is described as allowing unlimited entries. How can this be considered a visa run?)

Second, insufficient documentation.

I then asked, “Even if all documents are prepared, can I still be denied entry if I return to Thailand too soon (e.g., after 1–3 days in Korea)?”

They replied that they could not be sure, but it was probably possible.

I then asked, “We have pets at home. If we stay away for more than a week, they could die. From how many days is it no longer considered a visa run? Would one week be enough?”

They said they did not know.

We were then told to pay approximately 33,000 THB for return flight tickets for two people.

We were informed that we had to take a flight at 11:30 PM on March 29, as it was the cheapest and fastest option.

Additionally, we were required to pay a SECURITY FEE of about 3,800 THB (for two people) while waiting for the flight.

We had no choice but to purchase the tickets, and we are currently waiting in the holding area as I write this.

This is the first time we have ever been denied entry due to insufficient documents, and we are extremely confused.

We were able to contact someone through an acquaintance to help refill the automatic feeder and water dispenser for our pets (one cat and one dog), but we have no idea how long we need to stay in Korea before returning, whether we will be able to enter next time even with all documents prepared, or what we should do next.

Should we hire an agency?

If anyone has experienced a similar situation, we sincerely ask for your advice or shared experiences.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A married couple living in Thailand on a DTV visa described their shocking denial of entry upon returning from a short trip to Korea. Despite having prepared documents, including proof of employment, they were held at immigration and told they lacked sufficient documentation to enter Thailand. The situation escalated with demands for up-to-date payslips, which they did not have on hand. They faced a significant fee for return tickets and were left confused about re-entry rules, particularly due to their frequent travel pattern. Other users shared similar experiences and offered advice, emphasizing the importance of carrying comprehensive documentation and the need for clear communication regarding visa requirements.

An acquaintance has just arrived at my house. They have agreed to look after the animals. Fortunately, more than half of the food and water remain, and both animals are in good health. The air conditioner was also working properly. Thank you to everyone who expressed concern for the animals. I will return to Thailand and update you if there is any new news.

Mistake number one, you cannot live full time in Thailand using a tourist visa. My first move would be to contact the MFA, as they are responsible for the DTV, and ask what are the entry requirements of your visa.

Having dtv that allows multiple entries was supposed to be enough? Why still required to show any docs? The visa had been approved.

As usual with these types of posts, it is a platform that brings out one or two expert immigration visa specialists.. the problem lies with the unclear visa policies that seem to forever change, creating this problem that will occasionally affect genuine travellers like yourself, who have followed the rules and been punished for doing so… many of us who come to Thailand a lot can recall that one snotty IO who gave us a hard time on entering, and it’s a really unpleasant and unsettling experience. I also use the DTV visa and so far it’s worked just fine for me, but yours isn’t the first issue I’ve seen where the visa holder has been turned back for what I feel is harsh and unfair reasoning. Personally like a few others, I always dress smart, am prepared with documents in a folder as I approach the IO, am polite, and I always try to get in a line with a male IO.. it’s no guarantee but I think it gives you a better experience.. sorry to hear of your bad experience and outcome and I hope it is resolved soon

Yeah unfortunately the immigration officers are pretty corrupt. They all have different rules they follow or make up their own rules. You seemed like a couple they could squeeze a couple thousand baht from or more, hence the almost 4K baht security fee which is completely bull 💩 they pocketed that cash and the entire interrogation and ordeal you went through was so they could do that.

This is rough, this is one reason i am hesitant to do to DTV, its too uncertain! And we have dogs here as well, if we get denied entry, or have to leave for weeks thats not an option unless we know ahead of time. But unfortunately here everything is just random. No one knows the actual rules, theres so much grey area.

We were told on a DTV you only had to be gone for 1 day. You could literally leave, have lunch and come back. Most said make a mini trip like 3 to 4 days and have fun but seems like even thats not enough time.

If they want us gone for a certain amount of time they need to say that.

They need to get these rules together or more people are going to leave thailand and go elsewhere due to visa issues.

The information is too inconsistent.

My recommendation would be for you to request an updated contact from your employer that is renewed annually. What you have now is fine if you're staying in Korea to work remotely. But as you've discovered, it is not good documentation for working remotely while abroad.

I also faced the same situation earlier this month. Last year, I was issued 3 consecutive tourist stamps (2 months each + 1 month extensions by applying at the local immigration bureau, for a total of 9 months of government-approved stays). During that time, I had tried to obtain a retirement visa (which I qualify for financially) but was unable to obtain a required letter from the Board of Investment b/c I didn’t properly fill out a few fields on the BOI site application (one because I didn’t have the required docs on hand, and another because I couldn’t figure out how to combine all pages of my passport into one document, so I submitted them separately; a third because they didn’t approve the photo I submitted). At any rate, once it was rejected I could find no way to resubmit it, so I ultimately gave up on that and tried to re-enter as a tourist earlier this month after 5 months back in my country. I was told it was unlikely I’d be admitted for the third time after having spent 6 months last year in the country, but I received it with no questions asked. Each time I left the country a couple of days before the stamp expired, so I never overstayed. But when I came this year, I was told I “overstayed” last year and went through the same process you did, as well as having to spend the night in the detention room until my flight left the next day. I was given a form written in Thai, which I photographed and had my fiancee (who was the reason I was returning) translate it for me, and I found out that I have been banned for 5 years from re-entering Thailand. I am going to try to get that “sentence” overturned (she has a cousin who’s married to a man from my country—US—who told her to write a letter stating my case that I could take to the Thai embassy here. I am not hopeful that it can be done, though, and with yours and other horror stories I’m not sure if I want to attempt a return now. We will likely have to meet elsewhere.

Well, I'm halfway around the world, so you're likely to already be on the plane back to Korea, but even so, I would send your account into the Bangkok Post and other news organizations, perhaps even in South Korea.

There is, of course, a possibility of Thailand taking it out on you afterward by revoking your visa and/or blacklisting you permanently, which I'm sure you don't want to happen, but,,,,, as they're fond of saying in Thailand, "Up to you".

Good luck. And let us know how it turns out. 👍

What a nightmare. I can only imagine your frustration right now.

Herein lies the problem and I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse. So many unscrupulous visa holders in Thailand lately committing crimes. Many from China, Russia and S. Korea. Almost daily there are scammers, drug dealers and illegal business owners being arrested from these specific countries.

The new Thai government under Anutin has ordered Thai immigration to ramp up their efforts to weed out the riff raff from entry and re-entry. I’ve even heard the DTV is going away because so many have abused it. And is also why they are changing the tourist visa on entry back to 30 days.

Way too many visitors have abused their privileges for too long and the Thai government is cracking down.

Regardless of how legitimate your documents are, you’ve been caught in the current net of pushback. You might have to hire a lawyer to sort this out. Good luck! 🙏🏻

I don’t live there but sorry you had to through this. From reading so many posts on this, it seems due to reason and numerous changes in Thai immigration rules there is a lot of confusion lately, which is not a good look for Thailand. As with anything, when changes occur and are not clearly communicated, there will be hiccups. It just sucks when these things affect well meaning people. Hopefully you can get it all straightened out. Thailand has the right to make their own rules but when they do they should be clear and communicated to everyone. Language barrier is another issue in these matters as well-so that just confuses things more. At least your animals are taken care of…Thailand has hurt it’s image with so many things like this but they also have a bunch of criminal, thugs, illegal businesses and they are trying to get a handle on this too or so it seems. Good luck and I hope they get this all straightened out.

ALWAYS choose MEN Immigration Officers, no matter where you land in Thailand!! Sorry, this has nothing to do with sexism but statistically speaking, most of those who got denied entry (for whatever reasons unless clear violation of multiple entries), it was ALWAYS an old grumpy lady started to suspect EVERYTHING, then hand out your case to her colleague, which likely the same female officers, then she will asked some extra "security" help from any MALE officer to take you to interview room. And trust me, inside that room was..again...a freaking clueless middle age women who needed convincing why she is currently feeling under the weather at that exact moment you were talking to her.

and this is from my personal experience in and out of Thailand since 2002, the ONE time i didnt know but queued for a lady IOs (because it was less people), i had to deal with all her questions, kinda like pre-interviews and i had to show all my documents.

Never had such experience with MALES, either in Phuket, Chiangmai, Don Muang, SVB, or even the border of Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. NOT a single damn care was given by those MALE IOs.

This doesn't sound like a great experience but I just want to recommend not to leave pets alone when it's more than a day. Surely they can eat by themselves but 1. Thailand is extremely hot and they could overheat 2. Anything like a fire or another earthquake could happen anytime and so no one could save your pets in this case 3. There's plenty of pet sitters who take pets to their own houses, so it's not a problem finding a pet sitter in Thailand.

🇹🇭DTV ADVICE 4 EVERYONE 🇹🇭

"I’ve been living in Thailand on a DTV since 2025, and while the visa is a great tool, we have to remember that Immigration officers have total discretion. Having the visa doesn't mean we are exempt from proving we still meet the requirements.

In my experience traveling between Vietnam and Thailand, I’ve noticed that your physical appearance is your first line of defense. Arriving with a 'dirty' look, looking like you just stepped off a party island, or having that 'marijuana-hippie' style are massive red flags for officers. They are profiling you the moment you step up to the counter. If you look like a professional remote worker, they treat you like one.

My advice: Learn to handle the situation strategically. Dress like an intellectual professional, have your 2026 physical documents (payslips, contracts) ready in a folder, and show them you have the means to be here. Once you pass through those gates and get your stamp, you can go back to your usual style and your life in the mountains, but at the airport, play the game right."

My last arrived to Thailand with my dtv was quite similar they did all this to me and the crazy thing is that I never show anything not even my address because I live in Pai but I arrived from Vietnam late to chiang mai and they did just the same ... Interview, sitting and recording with the phone and I didn't really show much worry... And she was why u don't have a hotel in chiang mai.. and I said . Because I don't live here i live in Pai and my house is in Pai and I didn't knew I will stay in Chian mai so I didn't book nothing... She was laughing.. as well this probably sounds crazy but as they see you they treat you.. I was wearing clean and smart clothes which I know everyone gonna laugh here because I am saying this... I know the migration was looking at my nails and my clothes like analyzing me .. after few more words she just tell the others to let me go .. I am 100 per cent sure if migration see you wearing clothes like a hippie or whatever they don't like holding a dtv .. could be a problem but as well could be not... What's the message... Choose a man always... MAN ARE AMAZING..

You have been steamrolled by them. Thailand is a visa labyrinth. Fortunately I stopped living in Thailand before the visa runs became too difficult. I had a work permit at the end so no problem. Now I just stay as a farang tourist. Expat days are over. I always assumed being white helped a lot too.

Nobody is telling you the truth so far in the comments, so here the objective truth: DTV visa does NOT allow unlimited entries. If you leave and come back only 4 days later, no matter the visa, you will be grilled.

Why? IO's knows that most people get DTV visa, and other visas, with the help of agents, and therefore never meet all requirements. So went they see random out and back in days later, they will denied in mass. This is something that everyone should known.

The safe way to get back in is to contact Thai Visa Centre. It usually cost 4k baht to get in safely VIP entry, but more now because you have been denied. I don't know the exact cost, but likely 6-10k baht per person and you will get in from your DTV, no question asked. You won't have to show anything.

You can basically get back in any day you want, so even in a few days. You likely won't be allowed back in from that denial entry even if you try in a month. But with an agent, it avoid all the hassle that you went through.

Also, if you had contacted Thai Visa Centre from the airport, they could have solved the situation on the spot. Money is king. So an agent can also deal with a denial entry on the spot. You just need their contact on your phone, and you let them know what is going on, and they can deal so that you still get in.

Sujy Sujaree I disagree. I let for Malaysia for one day when I was denied a spousal visa because my docs were not translated. I got 30 days and returned to the US. Then got a visa based on retirement. Much easier. But I left Thailand and returned a day later. Was not a problem.

Robin Virant No, a scam imply that you do not get what you pay for. If you pay an agent, you get in hassle free. So more like a bribe. If you mean the denied entry, yes, in certain case it's to push people to use agent more. But once you come back only 4 days later to reset another entry, you need to have every piece of evidence under the sun to avoid a denied entry.

Sujy Sujaree what a loaded liar you are. I fly in and out of Thailand at least 1 time a month and usually 2 times a month and go in and out for only 2 days only. Last year I had 21 entries with no questions. And been doing the same for 10 years. Stop lying

Jo Clemente The amount of entries does not matter, but how long each entry last for does. if you always use your DTV for 6 months, leave for a few days and come back to reactive it, you will often get denied at the airport unless you have rock solid proof that you are not abusing the system (employment with every single piece of evidence). Why? Because many people got the DTV with agent and don't do what is said on the application (don't actually work, or do cooking class, or wtv reason they got their DTV for). What you are describing is completely different and does not apply to OP.

Marcin Miśkiewicz you have to carry continued proof of remote work employment with up to date pay slips up to date proof of employment etc … misunderstanding what the DTV is unfortunately led to this sad situation. At this point they are better to contact an agent to help this get everything done properly.. so they can return … I wish it was different. My Daughter was banned when very young from the US because she did not listen to me when she tried to go down to live with her boyfriend… it took 5 years before she could enter again. Thailand’s rules are much less draconian. Good luck to getting this all sorted out.

The DTV is a tourist visa. The DTV is not a non-immigrant visa.

DTV is not meant to allow living in Thailand. You can’t even open a bank account on a DTV.

The DTV was created by the Foreign Ministry and not by immigration, so there is always going to be promises made by one party that might not be kept by the other party which is responsible for securing the borders and not public relations and promotion.

Two lessons:

1. Get the correct visa (Elite or Retirement)

2. Never trust Thailand with any more than you can walk away from

Brook Powers I thought both DTV & Non O visa fall under the remit of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs .

On its inception widely promoted by TAT to encourage Workcation & soft power applicants .(many under 50 ) to stay up to 180 days , exit & return or immigration extension. . Nobody at the time said "You can't live here "

We can all now put the cart before the horse & say it's a tourist visa or reference opening accounts when many did open Thai bank accounts & they were subsequently closed or now have restricted use allowing transfers in & ATM withdrawal

Martha's Vineyard I wouldn't call it a scam . Having up to date documents & statements makes perfect sense because if you were to go to an in country Immigration office for +180 days extension you need the 500,000k requirement + new up to date supporting documents . So entry points & local immigration are obviously nearly aligned on requirements. Explains why nearly everyone skips out of the country

Brook Powers Actually, the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) is NOT a tourist visa. It’s a specific category for Remote Workers, Digital Nomads, and cultural participants (like Muay Thai or medical treatments).

The confusion comes because tourists are rarely asked for paperwork, but DTV holders ARE. Since the visa is granted based on your professional status and remote income, Immigration officers have the right to ask for updated proof (like 2026 payslips or active contracts) to ensure you still qualify.

Sounds like DTV is nothing but a scam that immigration can toy with at their discretion. Glad I have not invested in that shit show. Maybe I will move to Vietnam, Thailand doesn’t seem to want the money from foreigners living here anymore! Immigration are out of control on a power trip deeply set in corruption. As a travel consultant I will steer people who want to relocate anywhere but Thailand if this is going to be the case. It’s what we call a “sales prevention program!”

Eric Alan They’ve not shut the border down, not even close. Getting more strict is not the same as closing the border

The rules don’t really seem to be changing all that much, tbh. After all, the DTV, especially the digital nomad aspect, seemed to be designed with the intention that people would be, well, nomadic, coming and going every few months, not exactly as an 5 year residency permit, tho that seems to be how most folks try to use it, and how influencers have been promoting it
