Hello,

I have an insurance issue. Maybe someone has had the same problem or knows what I can do.

Last July, I renewed my international health insurance contract (Chapka) for one more year. This insurance is designed for tourists.

But a week ago, I got my DTV approved and I'm planning to spend 6 months in Thailand.

According to my insurance, I won't be considered a tourist anymore, so they won't cover me while I'm in Thailand. Fair enough.

But... they refuse to cancel my contract, pause it, or switch me to another plan, which means I'm gonna pay for 6 months for nothing + I'll need to find another insurance.

Is this legal? Is there any way to get compensation or find a solution with them?

Any help would be much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏
Answer summary
The poster has a health insurance issue after renewing their policy with Chapka, which is meant for tourists. They recently received approval for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) planned for six months in Thailand, but their insurance argues they won’t cover them since they are no longer considered a tourist. The insurance company refuses to cancel or switch their contract, leaving the poster with a potentially useless policy. Community suggestions include considering an upgrade to a different plan, seeking local insurance alternatives, and confirming if DTV qualifies as a tourist visa.

Can't you upgrade it with them to "Adventure" or "Tempo Expat"?

Depends on your country I’m guessing. Your policy likely doesn’t cover health care in other countries. If you signed a one year contract you’re likely out of luck with being able to cancel. Sorry mate.

DTV is still a tourist visa. What’s their criteria for tourism?

What flavour of DTV did you get? you're not allowed to work remote on all of them, so if you got anything other than DTV1, you could argue that is a vacation visa.

But... I would start looking for a new insurance company either way, that is just bad customer service... and I don't want to think about what they would pull if/when you make a claim.
