Hi everyone! 👋

Has anyone here gone through getting a passport for a baby born in Thailand to foreign (non-Thai) parents?

Our daughter was born 3 days ago 🎉 We've got the hospital discharge papers, and we live in Phuket. From what I understand, the next step is to register the birth at the District Office (Amphur) – Mueang Phuket District Office.

What I don't quite get is the step after that. I've read that the Thai birth certificate needs to be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Department of Consular Affairs.

A few questions for anyone who's done it:

• Can the legalization be done here in Phuket?

• Does the birth certificate need a certified English translation first? Where did you get it done?

• Did you do it yourself or use an agent? Any recommendations?

• Roughly how long did the whole process take?

Any tips or experiences would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance! 🙏
Answer summary
The process of obtaining a passport for a baby born in Thailand to foreign parents involves several key steps. First, after the baby’s birth, parents must register the birth at the local District Office (Amphur) in Mueang Phuket, bringing necessary documents that include a hospital discharge summary and passports. Following this, they will receive a Thai birth certificate (Tor Ror 3). Subsequently, this certificate must be legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which requires certified English translations. The process can vary in duration, though it typically takes around 2-6 weeks. Parents can do it themselves or hire an agent for efficiency.

Congrats on your new baby and yes process in Phuket is quite clear.

After hospital papers you go to Mueang Phuket District Office to register birth and get Thai birth certificate for foreign parents. Bring hospital birth cert and parents passports and translation of parents names. They will give you Thai birth certificate same day. For MFA legalization you cannot do it in Phuket full step you need to send docs to Bangkok MFA Department of Consular Affairs. Some agencies in Phuket can do it for you by courier.

Yes you need certified English translation after you get Thai birth certificate. You can get it done at certified translation shop near Phuket Town or near immigration. Then you take Thai original plus translation for legalization. After legalization you go to your embassy to get baby passport. Using agent saves time and many families use Phuket translation and visa agents for two to three week total process.

For full list of Phuket offices and agent contacts for baby birth registration you can read Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon. It has step by step for foreign baby born in Thailand and how to avoid delay at MFA.

Yeah, our hospital did it for us as part of the package. But we went to our embassy by ourselves to apply for citizenship for new baby.

Here is the step-by-step process from beginning to end:

Step 1: Get the Hospital Document — When your child is born, the hospital will provide a medical birth report. Keep in mind this is only proof of delivery and not the official government birth certificate.

Step 2: Register at the District Office — Take the hospital birth report, your passports, and your marriage certificate (if married) to your local government District Office (Amphur or Khet). They will process the paperwork and issue the official Tor Ror 3 (ท.ร. 3) birth certificate.

Step 3: Embassy Registration & Citizenship — Once you have your Tor Ror 3 in hand, your next step is to contact your home country’s embassy or consulate in Thailand. You will typically need to bring the Tor Ror 3 (along with any required translations and legalizations from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to register the birth with your home country and apply for your child's citizenship and passport.

Go through the hospital, it should be a part of the birthing package so I would check with them. I'm surprised they didn't offer it. Or contact the hospital admin who will help you for sure.

In our case, the hospital arranged the birth cert for us, they sent a representative with us to the local district office and they gave us Thai and English translation. We then paid for another copy as a back up.

You then apply for the passport via your own country. Majority of applications are online now, you'll most likely need to post the application along with the original Thai and English birth cert to your country (this is why I suggest getting a back up copy so you have a physical copy with you at all times). Your country should post the original birth cert back to the address in Thailand.

In our case, the passport office in our country sent the passport to our local embassy who then arranged to post it to us (or you can collect if living in Bangkok).

The process, in our case, was quite straight forward and we had the baby's passport within 6 weeks.

I hope this is of some help, huge congratulations by the way. Hope mam and baby are keeping well.

I'm not 100% on how long you can stay but our baby was born end of November and we first left Thailand with him the following Feb. There were no issues with leaving, we showed his birth cert when departing as a reason he had no valid visa and they just stamped him out.

Just go to your embassy im not sure if your baby would be entitled to dual nationality because neither of you are thai im sure one parent has to be a thai national for that but go to your embassy and they will sort out the necessary paperwork thats what i did

Hi! This group focuses on DTV information, so I’d suggest posting in groups like Thailand Babies. There’s a lot of info there and other parents who might be able to help. Or maybe your local community expat group? Congrats, btw!
