DTV Workation, EU Citizen, remote business started few years ago.

5th May - I arrived to Hanoi

8th May - I applied for DTV for workation

13th May - status changed to pending approval

15th May - rejected (no reason given). I went to embassy and asked them personally, after she checked my document, she said - "Change an embassy". That was a bit ridiculous but I did what she said.

23rd May - I arrived to Vientiane (Laos)

24th May - I applied again

26th May - I was asked for an additional document which I provided but in better quality (passport bio page)

26th May after about 1 hour - status changed to pending approval

26th May after another 1 hour - I was invited for interview

5th June - Interview and visa approved.

Interview Question:

* What kind of plans do you have to spend time in Thailand?

* Show me account with your invoice payments

* Show me account where you have a balance over 500k

* Show me what do you do, examples of your work

Key tips:

* Dress well, be polite and elegant, very important thing in my opinion

* Take your laptop or print everything what you have provided

* Double check if your mobile apps are working to show your statements or bank balance

* Smile (yes, really), don't go there like you would go to jail, this helps in my opinion

I hope that will help other people.

An arithmetic question; if the Non O visa is only 90 days and you can't open a Thai bank account till you arrive on that Visa, but I've read that the
*****
0Bt has to have been in your account for 4 months before approval of a longer stay visa, where does the extra month come from? What am I not understating correctly?
Michael ***********
Michael ***********
Paul Williams not 4 months. According to immigration, 2 months. Some banks (I heard of Bangkok Bank) require freezing of your money for 4 months; otherwise they will not provide you with an approval letter for the immigration office.

Not "longer stay visa". It's called "permit of stay".

I used the Green one in the past. OK for daily banking and usually plenty of ATMs around - except for Koh Lanta.

But pray to god you don't get in a dispute with them because they will rip you a new hole. I was 10 days from receiving a payout from a long running court case and the green bank swooped in and claimed all the money.

They wouldn't have known about it without my lawyer posting the claim. But they sent their hot shot lawyer down from Bangkok and steamrolled the little weak provincial judge. He awarded them 100% of my claim.

They'd just posted 80 BILLION baht of profit for the previous 10 months. I was broke and living on a mattress on the floor in my friend's apartment.

All of this was made clear to them and the judge and it made zero difference. THAT is how the green bank operates. Just be warned.

That said, I have accounts with SCB (good for daily use, ATMs and cashless withdrawals are good, but the queues in the branches are veeeeeeery long).

And Bangkok Bank Limited. Also good for daily, usually shorter lines.

Good luck to you. Don't go green 😉

GoldLizard2937 thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I keep things pretty conservative with money. I don’t use leverage, never go into debt, and I always keep a buffer above whatever is required just so I’m never in a situation where timing or some technicality becomes a problem. I prefer a bit less yield and a bit more safety, even if it means I miss some upside. Because of that, I don’t really see myself ending up in disputes or relying on legal fights with banks or anyone else over essential funds, my setup is just not built in a way that gets me anywhere near that edge.

Michael Sternberg yes, that's the right way to approach finance, Michael. Sadly for me, this was the bank interfering in a court case that was none of its business. I had no intention of allowing them to appeal to the court and claim my award. Unfortunately, the judge let them walk all over him.

As I said, for day to day banking and transactions, they seemed OK, but it a mark of an organisation's code of ethics to see how they behaved in this situation. Pure 100% greed and zero consideration for fairness.

I for one will never use them again.

Could also have FCA, Foreign Currency Account, in $ or £ or € etc. , if you don't trust THB...! The immigration accepts it for retirement visa extension ..., although most banks don't pay any interest, or just a joke 0.05% for fun...!

Although the biggest issue I see is the near zero interest with all these accounts, even local or foreign..., if anyone can find an account with say 3 or 4% interest, that would be the best option...

I would recommend to have 2 Accounts at different banks for security reasos: there is a state guarantee of 1mio per bank and customer. So in case of bankruptcy of the bank you don't loose your funds. Another reason is you are safe with your visa funds...most immigrations have different requirements on how long before the extension the funds have to be on the account (in Sisaket it's 3 months)

Same as most here. Retirement deposit into one. Second for day to day. I have one additional for major purchases. But I rarely use that one. I check it once a year or so to make sure it's still current. Also I like banks that have branches in neighboring countries. I haven't had the need to use it yet, but it's comforting when I travel.

I was told that foreigners can’t open fixed-term deposits. It’s better to have two bank accounts and use TrueMoney for payments at 7-Eleven. If you use just one account, your bank book will quickly fill up with transactions. Also, your account could get blocked because of some minor or suspicious transaction, so it’s better to deposit your money and leave it untouched.

From time to time, you can make a small purchase (20–30 baht) just to keep the account active. And before applying for a visa, you should deposit 100 baht to update your bank book on the same day.

I don’t know what’s best for you but - I had one Kasikorn account with the 800k + a few 100k buffer/emergency funds and then transferred a couple of months living expenses on top of that. I rarely dipped into the buffer funds. I did all my extensions myself without any issues. I now have a Bangkok Bank account as well. I also don’t need the 800k anymore because my LTR visa doesn’t have a deposit requirement.

Either or it doesn't matter to immigration as long as the balance is adhered to during the period before and after the extension. I have seen written where some immigration offices require it for longer periods on either end of the extension renewal so check with the local immigration..

I season the money as required for 2 months prior to renewal, then remove the cash and convert to a stablecoin where I can get 4% interest. No-brainer. Rinse and repeat.

Michael Sternberg you sound like my grandad. He’s a dinosaur, too. Enjoy propping up failing banks. I learned when I came here in 1997 with the Tom Yum Goong crash how unstable Thai banks are with 50 financial institutions going bust overnight. Enjoy your 1% interest. Oh and by the way, you do know that the money you put in a bank, any bank, no longer belongs to you, right? You become a creditor only. Google it. If there’s a bank run, all you’ll get is a IOU. Who’s the clever one now? LMAO.
Michael ***********
Michael ***********
Tom Tuohy

I’m not arguing against blockchain, I’m arguing against pretending risk disappears just because it’s on-chain. Banks have issues, agreed, but there’s still a big practical gap between a regulated system with legal recourse and platforms where funds can get frozen, rehypothecated, or simply vanish with no one to call. Comparing extreme crisis cases like Cyprus to everyday banking while ignoring events like FTX or lending platform collapses is a bit selective. For something like visa requirements, this isn’t even philosophical, it’s operational: you need guaranteed access to cash at a specific time, not “probably accessible unless something breaks”. Higher yield is fine, just don’t sell it as a no-risk upgrade over boring, functional banking.
Tom *******
Tom *******
Michael Sternberg and BC Farang, you should read my Substack because you clearly do not understand banking whatsoever and that is fairly obvious to me. Whether you like it or not or are prepared for it or not, Blockchain is not only coming here, it has already arrived so if you want to put your money into local or even overseas bank accounts, where you no longer legally own it, while also accepting negligible interest rates and carrying massive risk, that is your affair. And don’t make me laugh as there’s no way in this world that government mandated banking insurance will cover your losses. You’d be lucky to get a few pennies back on the dollar if another 1997 crash came about, and if you don’t believe me check out what happened in Greece and Cyprus. Potentially frozen crypto accounts, you say? You obviously haven’t been paying attention with Thai banking over the last 12 months, have you? Hundreds if not thousands of westerners and Thais locked out of their bank accounts. Duhh! I’m done trying to explain this to people who just ignore history and cannot see what’s coming down the track, right in front of them. You carry on as it’s you who’s going to have to pick up the pieces when it all falls apart. I’m done, no more comments. Muted.
Michael ***********
Michael ***********
Tom Tuohy

You conveniently forget to mention:

* No government deposit insurance

* Platform risk (exchange can freeze, collapse, get hacked)

* Smart contract risk (in DeFi)

* Counterparty risk (borrowers default)

* Regulatory risk (accounts frozen, geo restrictions)

..it looked smart at first. Moved funds into USD Coin on a lending platform for ~4%. Yield was coming in, all quiet. Then some big player in crypto blew up, panic started, and withdrawals got ‘temporarily paused’. Of course, that’s exactly when I needed the money back in the bank for visa renewal. Ended up waiting weeks, stressed out, and hoping I’d even get full access again. The 4% suddenly didn’t feel that clever..
BC ********
BC ********
Tom Tuohy You're fearmongering. Is it possible something goes wrong ? It always is. But during the decades I have been here, kasikorn bank hasn't fallen. And don't pretend your crypto solution is completely safe, because it definitely isn't. There is also a risk.

If I were to panic about it, I would rather just put the 400 k you can withdraw as cash in a drawer at home. We're talking about only a few 100k's, not 10's of million.

And look how you made a stupid mistake last year with your obsession of trying to make a few thousand baht with your crypto. If you would just have left it in a fixed account, you wouldn't have made that mistake and come asking for help.
Tom *******
Tom *******
BC Farang so it’s more clever leaving 800,000 Thai baht in an account where you no longer own it? Is that actually what you’re saying? Where you only get 1% interest? In banks that have a history of massive default? Btw, I don’t do it so much for the extra interest but for the security aspects but of course you won’t mention anything about that. Wonder why? Of course you won’t mention the elephant in the room because that weakens your argument. Get outta here.
BC ********
BC ********
Tom Tuohy boosting being clever over a measly few thousand baht a year which caused you to mistakingly overdraw your required money last year ? Not so clever.

I use one account for daily expenses and the other for the visa 800,000 Baht. I transfer my living expenses from UK to the visa account twice a year and then move it to my other account, I only do this because I had setup the transfers when that was my only account however I keep it this way to show that the account is still active and ensure that the bank doesn't close it thinking it's a dead account. You don't have to transfer 800,000 Baht each year, you just need to have that amount in the account. Having separate accounts means that I don't accidentally withdraw too much from the visa account and drop below 800,000. I also use Kasikorn and have found them to be a good bank.

For marriages it’s ฿45k a month if you do the monthly balance

But even then it’s tricky because it has to have the right verbiage all the time on the international wire one typo and you lost a month
Potpon******
Potpon******
FascinatingAvocado2293 that’s the best thing to do IMHO…but everyone has their own opinion on it

Banks are forever changing the seeding time for the money

For decades the money only had to be in the bank for as little as 3 days prior to your renewal date

Now some banks are saying 2 months prior and 2-4 months after…so that gives you 6 months to use it before you have to put it back in….but if you miss either date you’re out of luck

Good luck

Bernard Rouhaud What has your history of living and retiring to do with your explanation that you have to show you use it for daily life ? Absolutely nothing. And asking me since when I started coming here and then retiring here ? A bit earlier than you, but has still nothing to do with your wrong answer.

But I will assume that all this is a misunderstanding because English isn't your first language, and your explanation didn't come out as you meant it. Happens with me sometimes also.

This case is about 800k baht in an account as a requirement for the non-O based on retirement = 50 years or older yearly extensions. Anything else is irrelevant.

You seem to claim that you have to show that you use this money for daily life ? Is that correct ? Because that is what you wrote.

I and others disagree. Based on the rules and personal experiences when extending.

But you claim that you have to show to Lamoang immigration you use that money for daily life ? So how does tjat work ?

Because as soon as you start using it, it will drop below the 800k limit.

Meaning you put at least a million in that account, so you can show immigration you use that money, right ? Paying for groceries, restaurants, etc.. from that account ? How does it work in your case ? You show the IO your expenses ? Do you have a minimum amiunt you need to spend ? Because just buying some toothpaste every month should not be enough to prove you use tnat money for daily expenses.
