TLDR : Answer Summary
The fine for a late 90-day report in Thailand is a flat fee of 2,000 baht, regardless of how many days late the report is submitted. Some confusion exists around a supposed 500 baht per day fine, which actually applies to overstays, not late 90-day reports. It's important to distinguish between these penalties to avoid unnecessary fines.

you are getting confused with overstay V 90 day reports, overstay is 500 baht per day up to a maximum of 20,000 baht where failure to lodge a TM 47(90 day report) is 2,000 baht flat fee whether you are 8 days late or 8 months late, they have nothing to do with each other.

Late 90 day reporting is 2000B. Did you report 4 days late (and assumed 500B/day) or, as above, was your entry stamp 4 days expired?

best not to have lots of stamps in your passport that say you dont follow the rules, especially when applying for visas to another country.

I've heard of people not even bothering with the 90 day report. They just pay the 2K fine when it's time to renew the visa.

That's true but they should consider online reporting which takes them a couple of minutes every 3 months and saves them 2000B a year

It’s a flat 2,000 baht fine whether you’re 8 days late or 8 months late.

The 500 baht per day fine is for overstay, nothing to do with 90 day reports.
