TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are married to a Thai citizen and seeking a permanent stay in Thailand, the most suitable and cost-effective visa option is the NON-O visa based on marriage. You can apply for this visa in-country or out-country, with respective fees of 1900 baht (in-country) and 5000 baht (out-country). To extend your stay, you will need 400,000 baht in a local bank account for three months if opting for the marriage-based extension, which is less than the 800,000 baht required for retirement visas. It's essential to check specific immigration office requirements as they may vary.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Come in on a "tourist visa" and apply for extensions when u r in Thailand. I'm over 50 but here on Marriage Visa becoz it's cheaper to maintain the 400K in a Thai bank than 800K for a retirement Visa.

That said; if u using the 400K route. That money must be in a Thai bank account in your sole name (no joint a/cs) for 3 months and the balance cannot fall below 400K during the 3 months. So u gotta plan ahead and find a Thai bank willing to open an account for u.

Applying for a Marriage Visa in my province is easy, the list of documents required maybe long but nothing anyone with an average intelligence can easily do. No need for agents or tea money. Cost me ฿1900 only each year.

this is why we often decline posts like this that ask open ended questions without providing details like

where are you now?

what your nationality is?

are you able to meet the financial requirements of 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only?

Where will you be staying once you come here?

The answer to all those questions affect the advice you will get as far as your course of action.

As it is now people were just throwing out options not having a clue about the answers to the questions I just asked in this comment

This is the general list of the requirements for an in-country initial Non-O visa based on being married to a Thai national (the sheets above are for extensions, not a visa itself). This is just a general one and the exact requirements are immigration office specific. You need to go to your local immigration office to get their latest handout of requirements once you arrive at your destination in Thailand. Anyway, you better check this and get things ready before you fly if you want to apply for an initial visa in Thailand.

the „under consideration period“ seems to be different from immigration to immigration 😉

@Conny *******
its just a guide because it depends on manpower, how hardworking and the case load of the local immigration office is especially if they need to do a house visit.

it can vary from office to office.

No, it is from Facebook group Thai Visa Advice

You should check with your local office for their specific requirements which can be written in dual language, English and Thai.

You can apply at your country's Thai Embassy for a visa based on being married to a Thai national. Once you are in Thailand you can apply (subject to financial conditions) for annual extensions of stay based on marriage.

I will assume that you are already here on a single entry Non-O (based on marriage), if so then applying for an extension of stay based on marriage only requires 400k in the bank as opposed to the 800k if based on being over 50.

NON O Married to Thai

You can apply in-country or out-country.

In-country, 1900 baht, much paper work at your local immigration office.

Out-country, 5000 baht, few paper work requirements at the Thai Consulate Savannakhet, Laos.

Both are for one year.

Also, with the visa obtained in Laos, if you re-enter Thailand just before the validity of the visa expires you will be granted a further 90-day permission to stay which can be extended at your local immigration office. I found that the extension obtained at my local immigration office required more paperwork than the visa obtained in Savannakhet. The visa obtained in Savannakhet can be stretched to 17 months before renewal is required.

Yes, local offices can have differing requirements…welcome to Thailand. The NON O Married to Thai visa from Savannakhet isn’t for everyone, but it is an alternative for some.

I recently went to Savannakhet, the first time in three years, due to Covid. The requirements are still the same as in pre-Covid days and application is so simple. Providing your paperwork meets requirements there is no discussion, they issue a numbered receipt and you pick up your passport the following day. In Savannakhet they are very quick and efficient.

@Stephen ******
Yes, I went there one year due to a forced error interruption of my monthly foreign deposits to my Thai bank, so I had to use it as a bridge.

They were great, and those that applied for it were glad to have the option for various reasons.

@Dannie **************
Savannakhet Laos is a multi-entry Non O Visa as Married to Thai requires you to LEAVE and reenter Thailand every 90 days or 150 days with a family visit extension of stay of 60 days added to the 90 obtained on Entry.
Dannie ***************
@James *******
Yes, it does, and it can be an effective alternative for some under their specific circumstances…particularly financial.

It is an alternative to in-country requirements, with it giving the recipient the burden of leaving at least every 90 days.

Some like it…some don’t.

👍 it's an option.
