Has anyone had any experience and success in applying for a LTR visa as a 'work from Thailand professional'? I'm looking at the process time line (as shown here) and can't figure out at what point you pay for your application, is it after you have been approved after your documents have been reviewed that you are eligible or right at the start of the application?
Also, is it easy enough to apply without an agency (I'm from the UK)? I'd like to hear people's experiences.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The application process for the LTR visa begins with submitting your application to the BOI (Board of Investment) in Thailand. You do not pay for your visa until after your application is approved. Once approved, you will receive a notification and can then decide whether to apply for the visa at a Thai embassy abroad or pick it up at the BOI's office in Bangkok. If you collect your visa in Thailand, the cost is approximately 50,000 baht, which might be cheaper than applying through an embassy due to unfavorable exchange rates. Additionally, it's been noted that the process can take longer than expected, with some applicants waiting around 6 weeks.
LONG TERM RESIDENT (LTR) VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
Many people have it. The first thing you do is apply through the BOI. They are the one that makes all the decisions so you should ask them any questions.
Once you're approved they send you notification and then you tell them whether you want to apply for the visa at your Thai embassy outside of Thailand or if you want to pickup the visa in Bangkok at their office.
You pay after you're approved, either as part of your application to the embassy, or you pay directly to the immigration office next to the BOI when you go to pickup your visa.
I recommend getting it in Thailand because then you'll pay exactly 50,000 baht. If you apply at the embassy you'll pay more because they all use a fake exchange rate that will cost you hundreds of dollars more.
There's no reason not to apply if you think you qualify. It's free to apply and you'll find out if you're approved before you have to pay anything.
yes. But you don't need a tourist visa. Just travel visa exempt. But your airline may require you to show proof of a ticket of Thailand. You can just google "onward travel ticket" and get proof of a ticket for $15
