Re: the THB 800,000 deposit for the non immigrant O or OA visa

Has anyone decided to give up or not renew the visa, and has subsequently successfully withdrawn all or almost all the funds?

Some webpages comparing the Thailand Privilege Card vs the retirement visas treat the THB 800,000 like an "expense" suggesting it must be kept there as long as the visa is desired (which is correct), but then say nothing about what happens if the visa position is unwound. Which would make someone think as though this THB 800,000 deposit cannot be depleted if no longer required.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the THB 800,000 deposit required for the non-immigrant O and OA visas in Thailand. Users emphasize that this deposit is simply a personal bank balance and can be withdrawn when the visa is no longer required. Several commenters share personal experiences regarding transferring or withdrawing this amount both in cash and electronically without any significant issues. However, some also highlight potential challenges like anti-money laundering regulations and bank policies that might affect large transfers. Ultimately, the consensus is that this deposit is not 'locked' in a way that prevents access once the visa status changes.

Weird how not one person has answered his question.

Understandable as someone who has not renewed their visa is unlikely to still be in the group.

Still, "there should not be an issue as it's your money" is not answering the question. I could give that answer yet have no clue if you are likely to have problems with taking out the cash either all at once or in chunks.

It's actually a reasonable question that I had never considered and it's amazing how irritated people get when they have no answer.

It's your money in your bank account. You can withdrawal it when you like. You could transfer it or change it to your home currency if you were to leave Thailand for good. Keep in mind the 800 000 needs to be in the bank for 3 months before and 3 months after renewal.(2 months before first time). And never be below 400 000 for the other 6 months. So it costs you 60 000 to 80 000 baht to have that money in a Thai bank earning no interest if you were getting 5 percent in your home country's account.

James Smith Thank you for your answer and the opportunity cost analysis.

My question is:

Has anyone decided to give up or not renew the visa, and has subsequently successfully withdrawn all or almost all the funds?

2 people have been gracious enough to answer exactly what was asked.

Thank you also for pointing out that at the low end of THB 60k in yield foregone, if sustained for 5 years that is a potential cost of THB 300k. So by comparison the Bronze Privilege Visa of THB 650k is now "merely" THB 350k "more" after "losing" THB 300k in interest, so this works out to slightly more than USD 10k for a five year no strings attached visa with included in-and-out for free. Which isn't so bad.
James *******
James *******
Fei-wei Chen People don't talk about the interest but it is relevant to some. I have spent many years in Thailand and can tell you 100 percent yes you can draw the money out when ever you like. It will be in a normal bank just like you have in you home county. It is not liked to your visa. You have complete control over it and can use it as you please. It's not in some government holding account.
Fei-wei ******
Fei-wei ******
OP
James Smith Thank you for those points. I must maintain a "floor" of THB 400k at all times though, and having to shuffle the money back and forth to use it and yet still maintain THB 800k at the required times is more hassle than it is worth. I will just straight up consider the lost interest of 5% x 5 years against THB 800k (if I am comparing it to the Bronze Privilege Visa).

As I understood the regulations right, it's your money in your account. There's no held balance or any other restriction. You have to proof via bank statements, that this amount was untouched since 3 month before the visa extension.

Furthermore it is allowed to have this amount in foreign currencies like US Dollar. The only restriction is to keep it as money daily available.

Which should keep it possible to transfer your dollars out of Thailand again.

I understand but this is not a question regarding the visa regulation, it's regarding transferring a bigger amount of money out of Thailand.

Please check this with a Thai bank customer service agent.

From my point of view it might be possible to transfer a minimum of the amount which you have sent to your bank account in Thailand.
Fei-wei ******

OP
Yuen Meng Yong Yes I can confirm that it is the bank that is the problem.

I made 2 transfers within 10 minutes of each other into Kasikornbank both under the THB 2M limit via DBS Remit. The 2nd transfer was blocked, queued and executed 24 hours later down to the minute. DBS Remit's own page only states that there is a 2M limit, but does not say how many 2M transfers you can make. So I have tested that process and can tell you that it is 2M every 24 hours. I incurred an expense of SGD 182 in airline ticket rescheduling because of this surprise and I successfuly claimed it back from DBS!

For info:

Thomas Leitz you are right. Immigration has no right to stop us from taking back the money. But banking laws may ask for the amount to be withdrawn not all at one go but, (probably) in a few withdrawals. Better to confirm with the bank.

It’s your money

It’s your bank account

Nobody take your money except you

If you transfer back to another account internationally, but yes, you may have to pay wire transfer fees or whatever other method you decide to withdraw, if there is associated with that withdrawal method

in addition, there’s a conversion rate that you have to take into an account with Thailand and your home Country

I don’t know how many times people can answer your question, and you keep re-asking the same question

Go to the bank and ask them, if you don’t want to believe anybody here

Jim Davis / To answer what I think was your question here.

The initial Visa does not require 800K in a Thai account. But the extension of the visa does.

So I guess its just a mixup of the Non-O A visa you apply for from your home country and the extension you do in Thailand within 30 days of the expire date.

Fei-wei Chen There would be no deposit, with Non OA, visa, your home bank is OK.

Most of the retirees here like me, opt for Non O (not Non OA).

After getting your inital 1 year extension based off 800k baht - why not deposit 65,000 monthly every month going forward and use that to extend the retirement visa instead of the 800k option

You can use monthly deposits in thai bank instead of 800k on your second year provided you can deposit at least 65,000 thb consecutively - the other option is 400k in savings with deposits monthly around 30,000 ( meaning you can lower the savings amount and off set it by monthly deposits every month as a third option )

Andrew Romine Thanks I have no problems parking that amount of cash so I don't need other ways to maintain the requirements. I'm asking about any difficulties pulling out the whole amount but not in person. Carrying 800pcs of THB 1,000 notes into another country usually violates their cash import laws. Has anyone here sent funds via TT from their savings account out of the country in large chunks like THB 800,000 at one go?
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
Fei-wei Chen you can pull the full amount out and carry it back home if you wish keep receipts with you showing where you got the money from. Its not a law to prohibit that amount of money just simply declaring you have over a certain amount going thru customs

Another option is you can wire the money back to your home bank with a fee just need the SWIFT code from your home bank to initiate international wire transfeer
Fei-wei ******
Fei-wei ******
OP
Andrew Romine Yes thank you I prefer the electronic method. I have no problems with the electronic trail.
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
Fei-wei Chen yes i am speaking from experiance carrying cash over a certain threshold all you have to do is declare it at customs and have documents showing where it came from - each country is different on the threshold

Leaving thailand with large amount thai immigration / customs wont ask. The country you are going to is where you declare it then again they count on the honor system mostly.

When i travel and i have large sums of cash i carry it in my carry on not my checked bag just personal preference

I'm asking for real life cases where someone has given up the visa and his/her experience repatriating the money out of Thailand not just internally to another account, whether there have been roadblocks etc. The way the Privilege Visa is being sold suggests that their fee is good for 5 years (or however long the corresponding visa is), but the THB 800,00 is locked up for as long as the visa needs to be renewed and implies that unwinding the deposit is not that straightforward.
Deslea ********
Deslea ********
Fei-wei Chen It’s only not straightforward if you still want a new visa at the end of your current one. Plenty of people have been unable to renew because they withdrew their money and didn’t replenish it in time to season it for their new visa, so it can’t be that hard. The bank will hold the money if they gave you an immigration letter saying it was being held, for the period they said it would be held (a few months), but that’s the only blockage.
