What are the steps to extend my visa by traveling to Vientiane before it expires in Thailand?

My extended visa from local immigration office (CM) expires may 28. Plan is to go to Laos, Vientiane, apply visa, then back to CM. Next plan will bring me out of Thailand via. BKK, est. latest july 7. What would be recommended in this situation? If going to Vientiane to apply for new visa end of may, then how/when to book agreement? And will I need to go to the local immigration office on June 28 again, when my plan is to leave latest july 7? How do you plan your trips to Vientiane?
