What are the requirements for obtaining a DTV and enrolling a child in school in Thailand?

Not sure the dtv is appropriate if you want to enroll your child in a school.

This assumes you want to spend most of your time grounded in Thailand.

Better to get an ED visa for your child and get a visa as a legal guardian.

Or

Get the child a dependent dtv and homeschool and travel around as a family.

How long did it take to approve?

Thanks for all the detailed replies my child got accepted into Bangkok Prep and will be enrolling this August. I’ve just been granted a DTV visa so I plan to apply for a DTV dependent visa for my wife since this is far more straightforward than her applying for a guardian visa

What I’m unsure about right now is whether my child needs to apply for a student visa really appreciate all the advice I will reach out to the school to confirm if my child can enrol using a DTV dependent visa instead

We got our DTV in Canberra too. You need to show 500k per dependant but yes they can definitely be dependents under your visa. Many international schools will let kids enrol on a DTV but just as many want the education visa. You and your wife can have the DTV and your child the education visa if that's easier.

Have you selected a school?

Some schools require the children be on ED visas, ours does.

To apply in country they must have been in Thailand 30 days, then we visited immigration and got a date approx. 3 weeks later to return, in the mean time it was 'under consideration'. From there we got a 3 month visa (from the initial attendance date, not the pickup date). And then we were able to renew for a year. And will get a multirentry stamp soon.

We applied in Chiang Mai. No issues, just a lot of hanging around at immigration.

My understanding of DTV is that you need to cancel is at the embassy you applied, so it may be difficult if you apply in Aus and then need to cancel.

If you havent yet selected a school to know if he needs to be on ED visa I would consider him entering on a tourist visa and applying for DTV dependant in a neighbouring country if it ends up being the path you take.

I don't know how strict the schools are on the 'must be on an ED visa', but I have seen several posts querying how to cancel DTV because parents have been told its a requirement.
