TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent updates from travelers indicate that the Chiang Khong border is currently allowing Visa on Arrival (VOA) into Laos, though there are mixed reports about closing times. Some travelers successfully obtained visas late in the evening, while others faced early closings. It's advised to hurry as the situation may change, and travelers are suggestively seeking alternatives like Ban Huak/Pong Mon border as well.
if you understand the story, you have your update. Border is open but closed early, got VOA from Laos but could not go back into Thailand, now stuk in Thailand to get VOA for Laos tomorrow. But all is possible it seems. Good luck
All of this just for say, officer told me they will deliver VOA tomorrow at Chiang Khong (because at the begining they wanted let us wait here overnight....).
I passed Thai border at Chiang Khong without problem at 7.30pm and be at Huay Xai immigration at 7.40pm but they already closed the office for visa on arrival. Talked a bit with officers there and they reopen the visa on arrival just for us (we are 3). Should get the voa in few minutes and will go back to Thailand (Thailand side close at 10pm).
chiang khong worked for me today at 19:00. i got a visa on arrival to laos, and it seemed like we were supposed to go to the market for a bit. i guess they dont love to make it seem like a border bounce? idk. but with my preexisting METV i got back into thailand 2 hrs later. note that one immigration officer said we couldnt do it, but another said we could. i THINK this was because i expressed it was for a border bounce initially? the process was a bit confusing but smooth
Positive Report from UK lady who called me 1 hour ago to confirm she was able to do her border run at Chiang Khong border. No issues there today. Not yet anyway.
