TLDR : Answer Summary
In addition to language learning and Muay Thai, there are various options for obtaining an education visa (ED visa) in Thailand. These include studying cooking, attending a massage school, or enrolling in a university program. Some schools, like Cordon Bleu Dusit Thani Bangkok, are known to sponsor such visas. It's important to note that the ED visa generally allows for an initial stay of 90 days, which can be extended based on your educational program. Many participants have successfully extended their ED visas through continued education, but they have to be aware that they are on extensions of stay, not a long-term visa.

cooking, massage, study at university for example ...

Okay what people are getting confused about is the difference between a VISA and an extension of stay.

When it comes to education visas, you get paperwork and go get a 90 day single entry ED visa from a thai consulate. Then when that is expiring you go get a 90 day extension. <- Once you get your extension you're NOT on ANY visa anymore. You're on extensions of stays.

As far as learning the thai language most people get a 90 day ED visa and then can get extensions of stays for 6 more months (totaling about 9 months of stay). That takes them thru basic and intermediate thai classes. Then they go get a NEW 90 single entry ED visa and an get extension of stay for 3 more months (totaling about 6 months of stay) That gets them thru the advanced level of thai.

Just so we're clear, this image shows a VISA on top and an extension below it. IF you have the bottom stamp in your passport, you're NOT on ANY visa, you're on extensions of stays.

No such thing as a 9 month ED visa, how long you can stay depends on many variables but normally you will be staying on an extension of stay and not the visa itself. I know many people who entered on a ED visa studying to become divemaster.

Benjamin Haag They don't come cheap though.

Cordon Bleu Dusit Thani Bangkok comes to mind, I believe they sponsor ED visas.

cooking classes? really? that would be so awesome, but never saw something while researching
Luke ******
Ok so other options are cooking classes and self defence classes. The latter one in Chiang Mai if you are not too good at self defence it will take a long time to learn.

You go to a school or University of your choice of study. There you ask if the school is certified by the Ministry of Education and if they can help you with the papers for an Education Visa.
Sultan *******
You could go to uni

Stevie *******
So do i get a "feed elephants with small bananas ed visa"?
Stevie *******
Yes, i wonder to about the scuba divver instructor ed visa, hahaha.

I had year long ED visas previously when it was permitted years ago, then they 'cracked down' on it and reduced it to 90 day only with possible extensions. It also used to be allowed for 3 years or more with a yearly extension, now it is only 90 days with 2 extension up to 9 months (as far as I am aware). Please make sure you know exactly what sort of visa you have Helen so you can share the correct information with people on this group :)

If you have a visa stamped and extended every 90 days then you have a 90 day visa that can be extended. You do not have a 8 month, 9 month or any other longer term visa. If for any reason they decided to NOT stamp your visa then you would be going home. There are only a few long term visas available for people staying in Thailand and you don't have one. As Robert says you have a single entry ED visa that is extended.

@Robert ******
it’s not 8 months though!
Robert *******
I don't worry your visa, but when people talk about 9 months visa I have to make it clear to all other members that there is no such thing. Some people only read what is convenient for them.
Helen ***********
I got 90 day’s on my visa and have had it stamped in immigration every 90 days. Don’t worry about my visa. 😂
Robert *******
Check your visa again, enter before date is 90 days after the sticker is placed in your passport and you got 90 days of Admitted to Stay when you entered Thailand. Not 270 days.
Helen ***********
It’s interesting about the CMAS ed visa though.
Helen ***********
@Robert ******
I know what the language ED visa is. I have one.
Robert *******
The Single Entry ED Visa gives only 90 days Admitted to Stay, than with paper from your school you apply for Extension of Stay. There is no 9 months only ED visa.
Andy **********
and PADI only takes a few weeks...
Helen ***********
@Robert ******
so if CMAS takes one two years, how will the new 9 month only ED VISA be any use?
Luke ******
@Andy *********
what? Some people learn harder, fail the exam and have to repeat the courses no?
Andy **********
@Luke *******
do not exaggerate please..
Robert *******
As said contact the Dive organisation. It take 1 year to become an Instructor and 2 years to get 2 star instructor.
Luke ******
Wonder how many years it takes to become a really good scuba diving instructor. Must take at least 10 years or so.
Andy **********
Robert you know how long the course is for learn Scuba Instructor? No? not more then a few weeks...so you sure don't get a ED Visa for learning Scuba Instructor.
Robert *******
You can contact the head office in Phuket to get more information:

@Robert ******
where is the proof of getting granted an ED visa to do an IDC? Again, this is new to me.
Robert *******
NO, you can NOT work as Scuba Diving Instructor, but you can have a ED visa while you LEARN to become a Scuba Dive instructor. Please read the difference.

@Rob***
, do you have more information about it? would love to learn it
Helen ***********
@Robert ******
I’ve lived in Thailand 5 years, went through my instructor training here. Never heard of anyone getting an ED visa for this.
Andy **********
it's not possible to get a ed visa as instructor, because you're not allowed to work with an ed-visa. As instructor you need a work-permit and Non B
Robert *******
You're learning not working. NO WP is given on an ED visa.
Benjamin ******

so learning diving or teaching?
Robert *******
Thats why you do not know me. I know more than one. I'm offered a 2 year ED visa, but as I'm married to Thai National I did not need it to stay inside Thailand.
Helen ***********
@Robert ******
never met any instructor who got an ed visa... and I’ve met a few.
Robert *******
If I remember correctly since 2006.
Robert *******
Just wonder why you ask? You want to stay easy in Thailand holding an ED visa or do you really are interested to learn something?
Benjamin ******
ORIGINAL POSTER
why is that necessary to know
Robert *******
Scuba Diving Instructor for example.
Stevie *******
So?
Robert *******
