An arrest of a DTV holder in Chiang Mai for working illegally:

[members only]
Answer summary
The recent arrest of a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) holder in Chiang Mai for working illegally has sparked discussions among expats regarding the implications of visa regulations, banking options available to DTV holders, and the necessity of having a Thai driver's license. Comments highlight various experiences related to opening bank accounts such as TrueMoney with a DTV visa, and there are mixed opinions about the usability and limitations of TrueMoney as a payment system in conjunction with visa requirements. The conversation points out the challenges and options that might be available for expats, especially concerning work permits and legal employment in Thailand.

If you have a DTV visa you should probably also get a Thai license considering you can only use a foreign license for a maximum of 90 consecutive days in Thailand.

You can. I opened a True Money account a few days ago. Pick "non-immigrant visa" then send a picture of your passport. They need to see the two pages and the border of the passport.

Bro woke up and decided to scare people with incomplete info. The menu already had these options and we select "passport side by side a printed DTV visa" in the category "non immigrant, non worker visa". It gets approved everytime ❤️

Scammer country they're trying to FORCE everyone to be 100% reliant on $8/withdrawl govt collusion ATM fees. But, eventually, once they know that's the only choice I'm sure they'll jack it up to like $12-15/withdrawl

Wait, DTV holders WITH Thai lincense OR own a condo CAN open a bank account?!?!

TrueMoney app is mostly just wasted storage space on my phone. You can't top your wallet up using a foreign bank card or by putting money in the Boonterm machines. Too inconvenient to top up the wallet.

Well even if this was true which is not TrueMoney is useless shiii anyway 🤭 I love
****
but incorporating TrueMoney was the worst decision they could ever have made, they should have just stick to snacks and forget all about banking decisions… other than that you can’t use TrueMoney with most QR codes or vendors anyway it’s also expensive the conversion etc just not worth it ..
Tore *********

@ベリ**
huh? You can use it every place that accepts QR. You can even use it with street food personal qr payment up to a certain amount of times.

Quite useful, even if I also have bank account.

@Tore ********
no you can’t, you can only pay for QR codes that has TrueMoney, which most of the vendors don’t have 🙂 also if you have bank account you operate under different visa than DTV and also different rules …

@ベリ**
that’s absolutely not true lol. I use it all the time on non true QR. Verified True money works perfectly well with normal QR,

And wrong on my visa as well. Ive been here almost 2 years now on DTV. Normal Bank account for just as long.

I managed to using my passport and non-immigrant, but getting money into the account was a pain. I had to get to a 711 to out it, so still having to take money out from atms at a cost.

I (and many many more DTVers) have the advanced account 🤦🏻 And NOWHERE on the TrueMoney screenshots or rules it says neither that the DTV isn't accepted neither that you MUST have a driver's license yes or yes. That's just what the OP is claiming, not TrueMoney's words.

It's not about the visa it's about documents accepted, which is the same for everyone. But TM is not really usefull because you cant topup with foreign card. I use it with my thai bank, but if you dont have, you need to withrdraw cash, then go seven etc.

KindDachshund6786 the options were the same back then, as your screenshots, so nothing has changed. I created it more than one year ago, BUT, you might not know this: we need to re verificate everything (meaning showing again the PDF visa and the latest entry stamp) every a few months (six maybe?) in order to keep the account alive. My last re verification wasn't long ago.

Choose passsport with non-immigrant visa (non workers) that's what I chose when I opened my account last year. What else are you supposed to choose? There wasn't ever a DTV option.

Same here. I submitted the DTV PDF file, plus the last entry stamp on my passport booklet indicating DTV on it.

What is the problem?

Every one staying longer than 90 days need a Thai driving license, IF they want to drive themselves.

I understand that most DTV holders only use a taxi.

Good news, but based on the screenshots, I assumed they don't accept DTV anymore, as they ask for a passport with a specific stamp, unlike before, they used to only ask for a passport without mentioning any stamp

Exactly, and the fact that they also accept a Thai drivers license shows clearly it is not about which visa you have, but more important to have an extra identification.

KindDachshund6786 to pay rent, use Wise: change money in Thai Bath and then do a bank transfer. costs 61.44 baht.

Easy
Dany ********
Dany ********
KindDachshund6786 why would anyone pay their rent via Truemoney? that makes absolutely zero sense. especially when you need to top up your TM account by cash only. will you take 30k out of the atm for 350 baht and then drive to a TRUE shop to top up TM? not a genius idea tbh.

just transfer it via Revolut or even Wise. totally unnecessary to go via TM for things like these. i pay 0.45€ per transfer with revolut and it arrives in few minutes

SoftFalcon4636 what? how quickly do you burn through 50k baht on a truemoney account that is usually for small sum transactions like a coffee shop bill or on the local market. you must be a very big spender 🤣

I just did open and verified a Truemoney account with a DTV (MuayThai) Visa 2 days ago.

I had to upload passport info page, dtv stamp page and the dtv e-visa itself. And I chose Unemployed as occupation.

I even could add a foreign wise debit card, but so far I didn't use it, so I am not sure if it really works. I had to approve it in wise app though, and it was accepted and saved in Truemomey.

[Update: the TM support just confirmed that it's not possible to actually use the foreign card. So the only way to use TM for me is to withdraw cash at the ATM and then use it to top up my TM account.

To me it seems there's no real usecase for me here.]

Participant anonyme 683 So what option did you choose?
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous ******************
KindDachshund6786 I chose passport, non-immigrant (worker) and occupation unemployed. It doesn't fit together, but support told me to use the worker option.

Well, and I smuggled the e-visa in by choosing "scan another passport page" or something.
