TLDR : Answer Summary
Forum users discussed the current status of the Vietnamese visa on arrival, noting that it has been phased out and replaced with an e-visa system. They highlighted that UK passport holders now typically receive a 45-day visa exemption upon entry, while other nationalities, like Australians and Canadians, face different rules. There was also mention of the necessity for a visa prior to boarding flights depending on the nationality. Overall, the conversation illustrated changes in Vietnamese immigration policies and varied experiences among travelers.

So many Brits here saying that they get 45 days visa exempt. Congratulations! Must be nice. But the OP is not British, he's Australian.

The system has changed, you apply for eVisa now before you leave then show them a copy when you arrive.

I used it a while ago, but they no longer do them. It was phased out last year. I think they wanted to get rid of the unintuitive naming, as you could apply for the visa anywhere but on arrival. You now have to get an e-visa instead, which is pretty much the same the previous visa on arrival was, but with a more intuitive name.
