DTV Muay Thai attendance requirements after approval?

Hi everyone 😊 I’m an American currently living in Phuket, and I’m planning to return to the US in December to apply for the 5-year DTV under the Muay Thai Soft Power category through the Los Angeles consulate.

I’ve been comparing different Muay Thai schools in Phuket, particularly their prices, program lengths, and visa-support documentation, and I’d appreciate recommendations from anyone who’s gone through the process.

My biggest question is what immigration actually expects regarding attendance after the visa is approved. For example, if a 12-month program includes a set number of classes, are you expected to use every class? Is there a minimum weekly attendance requirement, or is it more about demonstrating genuine participation?

I genuinely want to learn Muay Thai, but I don’t know exactly where I’ll be living when I return. Since I may end up farther from the gym, committing to multiple classes every week could become difficult.

I’m also wondering what happens after the initial training program ends. Has anyone been asked for updated attendance records or proof of continued training when extending their stay or re-entering Thailand? Do you need to enroll in another full program, or can you continue with regular class packages?

I’d especially appreciate firsthand experiences from people who’ve applied through Los Angeles or used a Muay Thai school in Phuket.

I’m trying to find an affordable, reputable school while also understanding what I’m realistically committing to over the long term.

Thank you! 🙏💜
Answer summary
The attendees of the Muay Thai DTV visa, particularly in Phuket, have inquired about the expectations regarding training after visa approval. While there is no set minimum attendance requirement published, participants are encouraged to genuinely engage in their training programs. Documentation such as training contracts, attendance records, and evidence (photos/videos) of training can be necessary for both immigration checks at re-entry and potential visa renewal applications. After completing an initial program, trainees can continue training with regular subscriptions instead of enrolling in another full program, but they should keep records updated. Applicants are also advised to ensure their chosen gym can provide necessary documentation required by the consulate, which varies by location.

There’s no published minimum, like X classes a week, for the DTV. Gyms normally ask you to commit to 6 months, but nobody expects you to use every single class in a 6-month package. What matters is that it’s genuine. You enrolled, you paid, you actually show up. Keep your receipts and ask the gym for an attendance record or a letter if you ever need one.

After the program ends, in practice, re-entry checks for proof of training are rare but it does happen, IOs often ask which gym you train at and they might call it too. So if you change your gym after 6 months, make sure they know you are on DTV and they know your full name in case an IO calls. Rules can vary by office and officer though, so don’t treat anything as guaranteed.

Usually the immigration officer asks you to shadow box. One time they brought a kid to spar with me and he swept me to the ground.

I heard “owweeeee” in a choir from the officers and was approved after that

Yeah, best of luck with LA. My husband & I applied for soft power using a program from a reputable school with a schedule for weekly classes, but we were denied 24 hours later. We met all other criteria. At least they were fast about it 😅 but we still lost $800 overnight and since LA is the only option for the state we live in.

If you're serious about Muay Thai, travel somewhere on the East Coast somewhere you have family maybe and get a new driver's license so you can use as proof of address to apply through any of the other US consulates.

JoyfulReindeer3586 I’m so sorry that happened to you both. That’s honestly what I’m most worried about since I’ll also be applying through Los Angeles under Muay Thai. 😞

Can I ask whether your school provided the additional official support letter from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), along with its SAT certification documents? I know LA specifically requires those now, so I’m wondering whether you submitted everything and were still denied, or if they gave you a reason for the rejection.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience. 🙏

Regarding accommodation: look on google maps, close to the camp. Especially around that "Muay Thai Road", are dozens of small hotels and lodges.

I’m not super worried about how close I’ll be staying to the gym, my main concern is getting approved through LA Consulate and getting back into Thailand (I’m leaving my animals here so there’s a lot at stake for me)

Immigration is expecting you to continue attending to Muay Thai because that is why you got the visa. After your initial course expires, you just book a new one

that’s fine with me it’s cheaper than a student visa every year lol

Hi! There is currently no stated DTV requirement to attend a specific number of Muay Thai classes per week or to use every class included in your program. However, if Muay Thai is the activity supporting your DTV, we recommend genuinely participating and keeping evidence of your training.

Several of our students have now been questioned by Immigration at the airport when re-entering Thailand and asked for evidence of their Muay Thai training. They have been able to show their subscriptions, bookings and attendance history, as well as photos and videos of their training.

We wrote about one student’s firsthand experience here:

**********************************************************************

Regarding what happens after your initial program, our students do not need to purchase another full DTV program once they complete the original one. They can continue training with a regular subscription or class package, and their attendance continues to be recorded. We recommend keeping your training records current and accessible when traveling.

For an extension of stay, Immigration may request updated supporting documents. Requirements can vary, so it’s best to check with the immigration office where you intend to apply.

One important point for your Los Angeles application: the consulate currently requires an official acceptance and support letter from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), along with documents from an SAT-certified gym. Make sure the gym you choose can arrange the additional government support document. It generally takes approximately 5–21 days to receive, so allow plenty of time.

The consulate also currently lists an FBI criminal certificate issued within the previous three months. Check the latest requirements before applying and allow time to obtain both documents.

Since you’re not yet sure where you’ll be living, it makes sense to choose a gym you can realistically get to and a program that fits your schedule. You don’t need to be a fighter or train every day, but choosing somewhere you enjoy training will make the experience much more worthwhile.

thank you for the info 🙏 i don’t really travel much so i guess for now im just worried about getting approved and back into Thailand. But as long as i choose say a year of muay thai and can provide all necessary documents there shouldn’t really be any reason for denial i hope, right?

My experience from the last time I came in through Phuket airport was that they wanted to see proof of me doing Muay Thai, in the form of recent photos/video. Since I didn’t have any (because I’m camera shy and just don’t take pictures/video of myself), they wanted to see a contract with a gym. Once I showed that they were satisfied. Not once did they ask me how often I train (and how would they check that anyways).

that’s good info thank you ❤️ i was thinking of taking pictures and videos when i go to train just curious if they care about how often lol I’ll have something like 96 classes for one year

PolitePelican1420 since this experience I have started an album on my phone with gym selfies and videos (cringe 🫣), at least 1 video and 2 photos per week (I usually train 3x/week), so next time I can show them this.

PolitePelican1420 currently a 9 month subscription but I have been training at the same gym for 5 years pretty much non stop now

If the training is less then 5 years, you won't get a 5 years visa. If you wand a 5 years DTV, go the workation path, but different requirements there. Usually training courses like Mui Tai / cooking etc are 6-12 months long, so you only get visa for same period. If courses last < 6 months, there's high chance they give you METV instead of DTV.

don’t be jealous. The requirement you said is only for Russians who must now apply in their own country. Other countries don’t require this and a 6-9 month course is sufficient especially for the US passport holders

HandyLizard5484 everyone must apply from their own country now or country where they have permanent residence. Not sure about the soft power dtv, though - for workation dtv it's 100%.

Also, what has russia to do with me?

nothing. Do a 5 year dtv on a 6 month course, keep using it and after 1-2 years post wining "I got turned around at the imigration, Thailand doesn't want tourists anymore" 😆

I have a legit 5 year workation visa, went the process in full, done my research on different options and have a good idea how it functions in 2026.

Some people, commenting here like "experts", ask BS questions in same group just 6 months earlier. If I see such questions, I understand the proficiency of the commenter already )) Have fun!

anecdotes are funny only until the point, when someone is asked at the immigration to provide proof of an ongoing course, that he applied for 1 or 2 years ago and obviously, the program has finished by that time. Even getting a 5 year dtv doesn't automatically mean, you can go forth and back for 5 years flawlessly. Immigration has the last word and recently they're doing more questionings and checks on wise guys getting a 6-12 month length courses and assuming they can chill for 5 years in the country. Those visas are made to let someone attend the courses like Muay Thai / Cooking / Language classes etc. If your course is finished, you no longer have a legal point to stay in the country. If this isn't enforced very strictly at the moment, it still doesn't mean it's fully legal. And obviously, the immigration is tightening checks alongside with the Thai government tightening rules, so assuming you can beat the system with a 6-12 month class (which, by the way, many even want to skip for obvious reasons) is just putting your assumptions on your luck and risk tolerance - nothing to do with legal rules.

Anecdotes do not make data. Your statement about needing a 5-year course to get the 5-year DTV is absolute nonsense. 100% nonsense. PS: I love the "do your own research" bit, like one of those snake oil salesmen selling horse worming powder to cancer patients.

DelightfulPomegranate9128 lucky, nice. A lot of people having trouble even with 6 month courses now. Mostly depends on the consul in the embassy where you apply in.

Also, think in advance, what you'll tell the imigration if asked for proof of ongoing courses after first or second re-entry. They might not ask anything, but if they do - better to have ready answers in advance. Good luck and have a nice stay ;)
