This might be a thing that doesn't exist but maybe somebody here has a recommendation.... Looking for somewhere within about 3 hour drive from Bangkok with clean beaches and not 5 star prices. I know about Koh Lam, but we are getting in late and don't have a ton of time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community suggests several affordable beach destinations within a 3-hour drive from Bangkok. Popular spots include Hua Hin, known for its beautiful beaches and reasonable accommodation, and Cha-Am, noted for its accessibility and attractions. Others recommend Rayong for its pleasant beaches and environments like Mae Ram Phueng and Bang Saray, while Koh Samet is mentioned for its picturesque scenery. Pattaya is also discussed, although it tends to be more commercialized. Overall, there are numerous options that cater to travelers looking for a balance of amenities and affordability.

Hua hin without a doubt!

Rayong beaches are lovely but not surf waves. Hua Hin is good but beach not marvelous .

Cha Am closer to Bangkok, has nice beach and other attractions.

Reasonably priced accommodation available at all three.

Stay away from all of the overcrowded tourist traps a.k.a. Hua Hin, Pattaya etc. Instead head to Rayong province. There you will find one of the top beaches in Thailand, Mae Phim. During the weekdays the beach is empty you can walk for 1000 yards without seeing anyone.

We live in hua hin, 3 hours from bangkok, great infrastructure, restaurants, schools, low prices, lots of beaches, nonetheless greatest water and beaches but they are still nice. You get a little.bit of everything in a calm quiet town with amazing people.

Koh Samet island could be an option..

Depending on your arrival time you could make it to the port in under 3 hours and it's a very short boat ride to the island..

Or if you don't mind a quiet village type atmosphere then Bang Saray is very nice and good beach and only around 2 hours or so from Bangkok.. (about 30 minutes past Pattaya) but nothing at all like Pattaya..

It's got a few hotels and accommodation options and some restaurants etc

I think they even have a
****
there (of course) but very much a fishing village atmosphere.
