Hello everyone. Has anyone had experience with utapao airport in rayong? I have been to Pattaya several times and always thought I had to fly out of Bangkok.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion gives insights into flying from Utapao Airport in Rayong. It indicates that while it's possible to fly from Utapao, many domestic flights usually connect through Bangkok. International options are limited, making it mainly a domestic hub. Some comments share anecdotal experiences and suggestions for getting to Bangkok from Pattaya, including bus services. Overall, the airport is not large and doesn’t offer a wide range of destinations.

Bangkok Airways flies to Phuket from there. We are sat at BKK right now having come from Pattaya.

Some of the Arabic carriers use to fly there before ", the situation "..
It's mostly down to how much money you are willing to spend. It's not a large airport and doesn't have many flights. There aren't any international flights to my knowledge, so if you want to enter or exit Thailand, you have to get to Bangkok first anyways.
Also basically every domestic flight will be going to Bangkok first and then to wherever else you want to go, but you're going to be paying extra for that trip from Utapao to Bangkok and then onto your final destination. So if you still thank that's worthwhile, then go for it. Else you can take a 130b bus to Bangkok, and I think there are actually buses that go directly to Suvanabhumi airport from Pattaya as well for not much more.
A funny anecdote about this airport: During the height of Covid, the country closed down any flight to or from a "red" zone province and Bangkok was one of these, so no one could fly to or from Bangkok domestically. Instead they increased flights to Utapao and added a very cheap shuttle service from Utapao directly to Bangkok. I'm not sure how this helped to prevent Covid since it was just a workaround to flying directly to Bangkok, but TIT right
