I am retired and comfortable financially,. and I am looking for a place on the beach or with a ocean view, bit cannot make up my mind as to where I want to hang my hat. I know I love my beach life and nightlife, and I also know Pattaya is not my place. I have also spent time in Phuket previously, Expense wise I am trying to limit myself to 4 to 5k US dollars a month. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have resided in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the past 25+ years but need a change of scenery.

Many suggestions in the comments regarding Hua Hin and they are appreciated but Hua Hin does not have the nightlife that I like. I love to relax in nightclubs at night. 😀🍻
Answer summary
The user, a retired expatriate looking for a beach location in Thailand with nightlife, seeks advice on where to live within a budget of $4,000 to $5,000 per month. They have ruled out Pattaya and are considering options like Hua Hin, Bang Saray, Koh Samui, and Jomtien, yet are concerned about the availability of nightlife in these areas. Commenters suggest various locations with potential accommodation options while emphasizing the importance of personal exploration and living experiences.

Edward, you might want to check out Bali. Bali has an EDM club scene history dating back almost 30 years.

Hat Yai in the far south, one of biggest cities in Thailand has everything and awesome beaches nearby at Samila, Songkhla. Also krabi is incredibly beautiful. The whole southern peninsula is interesting you have 2 different oceans and weather available within 2-4 hours drive. But you will find the tourist areas are expensive and crazy in high season, whereas the thai areas are too quiet and difficult for most foreigners.

Having said that the high season really only lasts 4 months but many things close down outside that time frame especially.on the smaller islands.

Koh Lanta maybe a good spot for you.

Stay off the islands in Thailand you will eventually get bored, plus everything is much more expensive. Thirty minutes south of Pattaya is Rayong, home of one of the best beaches in Thailand, Mae Phim beach. A lot of nice condos overlooking the beach. Monday thru Thursday you will have miles of beach to yourself. If you want to occasionally visit an island you can go 20 minutes away to a town called Ban Phe. Here you can catch a ferry or speed boat to an island called Koh Samet. Also the town of Ban Phe is pretty awesome as well. Thailands hidden gem..

Why would anyone want to travel to and live in another country just to be with other foreign folks. You're missing the whole point of being somewhere that isn't where you are from.

Most all these suggestions are tourist driven places, (both foreign and domestic ), and are terrible suggestions.

Don Cancamo Thank you for taking the time to respond but there are many factors such as healthcare, quality of life, economics and the list goes on and on .... Where do you live? If you feel the way you do why are you on this forum /webpage dedicated to Thailand Visa Advance and living in Thailand?
Don *********

Edward Haley

Quality healthcare, excellent quality of life, economics, ie: lower cost of living, and enriching cultural values are all available, and possibly more available in the less touristy areas of the country referred to above. If I told you where I live you would have to look it up as I doubt you know where it is.

I have seen one westerner in the last month, and nobody speaks my native language.

I'd say that relates to living in Thailand more than referring to expat populated bubbles.

Edward. Those suggesting there isn't nightlife in Hua Hin are being somewhat disingenuous. There's plenty going on, masses of live music choices, restaurants of every denomination, sky bars, family bars and girl bars. It has miles of beach and to the South there are some stunners as well as the amazing Sam Roi Yot National Park. There's day and night markets, and two superb modern malls.

It might be sleepy hollow compared with Phuket and Pattaya but it offers a far better quality of life. It's small enough to be easily navigated and both Bolt and Grab offer cheap taxi services.

Of course it's very subjective but a month or so in high season would give you the ideal time to explore.

Thaiñand is simply a better version of PV and the Bahia. Which is also nice.

Pattaya is the greasiest place in all of Thailand and Phuket not far behind. Check Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, Ao Nang, Hua Hin, Khao Lak, Koh Chang or even Chantaburi for more authentic Thai location.

Edward Haley I’m also Mexico PR and lived in the Bahia, but I really do love Thailand more. It’s exceptional and great value. I can understand why you chose it.

I’m very confident you will find the location that sits best with you. Try fishermen’s village area of Koh Samui. Still had night life, but more for adults. And much younger, more varied demographic than PV. Just shift around slowly. It’s here for you for sure

Todd McGowan Again you are soooooo appreciated! 🍻 I will most definitely research that are visit it. PVR is a shithole now with it being overrun by gays in old town Vallarta, politicians getting paid off by contractors to get building permits, and not taking into consideration if if could handle parking, water and sewer and the electrical grid. so now at times shit flows down the street and we have blackout. There is no parking anywhere even the public ramps in central are renting paces by the month. The culture charm I loved for many years is now gone for the reasons I stated. My home is in the Amapas which is next to Conchas Chinas which is the wealthier part of PVR nad what took me 20 mintutes to get to my house from the airport 10 yeuars ago now takes me a hour or more. Fricking sad.

My 2 top suggestions for what you seek are...

Hua Hin which is very popular with retired Expats and foreigners staying long term and its popular for many good reasons..

Or...

Bang Saray which is only around 30 minutes from Pattaya but feels a world away from the madness but still close enough to use the infrastructure and amenities of Pattaya..

Bang Saray has a nice village feel about it, nice beach and has some good accommodation options..

My advice would be visit both for 2 or 3 weeks and see which place appeals to you the most..

One more worth at least considering would be Cha Am about 30 minutes from Hua Hin so take a look at that while you are in that area..

This may actually surprise you but not everyone wants to live in the nightlife Disneyland atmosphere of Pattaya and perfer something a little more laid back.

If you like Pattaya then that's fine and enjoy but I would much prefer something a little more low key..

And some people enjoy mixing with other Expats and I understand that..

Personally it doesn't bother me one way or the other really and I am free to choose my friends local or Expat..

Edward Haley if that is the case you are actually quite limited. As others have said there are the places outside Pattaya like Sattahip. It’s going to be a personal choice. The best thing to do is to take a long rental in places you like the look of and go and live there a few weeks/months to see if you like it. I like Jomtien which is south of Pattaya and only a couple of hours drive to Bangkok. I also have a soft spot for Hua Hin. Go and look for yourself. I really don’t like Phuket. It is too crowded with tourists, the roads are rammed and it’s just too far from the capital. But that’s me! We are all different.

I have lived in a range of locations, from Cabo San Lucas, to most S.E. Asian countries.

For me, Sam Yoi Yot is absolutely perfect. It’s quiet enough for extensive navel gazing, but close enough 20 mins by car from Khao Takiab and the restaurants, bars and nightlife if you feel the urge to interact with both locals and expats from across the globe.
