Just a thought, have any of you British or any national guys living in Thailand permanently registered with your Embassy in case you die, or just so they know how to contact you. NO stupid answers please.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discussion revolves around whether expats living in Thailand should register with their respective embassies for safety and emergency contact purposes. Many participants share positive experiences about being registered, citing benefits such as receiving important updates during emergencies and having a backup contact in case of death. Some express skepticism about the effectiveness of embassies, arguing they are not essential for daily life or emergencies. Overall, the consensus leans towards the potential benefits of registration, particularly in critical situations.

The German government has a worldwide online register, where you can enter your address etc. abroad and who to contact in case of an emergency. But that is all voluntary. Still, some times it might be pretty helpful, like after the tsunami or during civil unrest in an area. OTOH this is NOT open to folks asking for your present address or such.

Hope that info helps...

Yes I registered with them. They send me details of changes in law's etc. During Covid they kept me up to date and even offered repatriation flights and a loan if I couldn't afford the fare. I have found their presence here to be advantageous.

With the internet now as it is the chances are my family will find out by my friends or partner contacting them online.

But it can’t be a bad idea to inform them.

My emergency contact is in my passport, and the local hospitals have my files already with my details.

With friends that have passed here their family was normally informed by a friend first.

But yeah you never know what the situation will be so why not.

My mom has me register her with the State Dept, whenever she travels. You get alerts for travel warnings, conflicts, and I never thought about the dying part, but for assistance in case something happens.

No, if I die my fiancé will know. No reason to get the embassy involved. All I need them for is to renew my passport when needed.

Really no need. When you croak the hosp and or police will create death cert and advise applicable embassy of your demise whether it was from natural cause or being eaten alive by flesh eating microbes.

What exactly does registering do?

Other than (for usa) let them know where to send the tax due notice.

, unless you have actual Thai citizenship granted, you are just a guest, that can be asked to leave at anytime. Being registered with your embassy let's them know you are here, and if anything serious happens that they can get ahold of you in a timely manner.

, a change in government that expelled all foreigners. Natural disasters, and where to go for help. Health emergencies like Cholora, a Malaria outbreak and such. A relative dies, or is in serious trouble and needs to get ahold of you. There are allot of "like what's". In Bangkok I get warnings about the protests and where to avoid. Lots of like what's.

, so you fit the definition of a criminal. That if the government knew what you were actually doing they would arrest you. Your "staying under the radar" gives you the opportunity to break laws you feel are insignificant...lolol

I agree, embassies are pretty useless to the average citizen on a daily basis except for passports/notarizations etc.., but in emergencies they can be somewhat useful, such as sending notifications about repatriation flights early in the pandemic (which I wasn't interested in, but could be useful to others) etc..I've lived overseas for 17 years and never had to use them for an emergency, but it doesn't hurt to be registered.
