Is this expat group in Thailand just about drama or is it actually helpful?

Well I just signed up for this group and a lot of things that I'm reading is a bunch of angry people that like to call people names I thought this was a site to help people out not to tell people how stupid they are and to file claims against them with the Thai government and all kinds of stuff is this site just about drama or is it about helping people getting information and giving information.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around an individual's frustration with negativity and drama present in a Thai expat group on Facebook. Many responses acknowledge the negative aspects of online interactions but encourage focusing on positive contributions and valuable information from knowledgeable members. Some suggest using blocking features to filter out unpleasant comments while recognizing that the community also offers helpful advice for living or relocating to Thailand.

So you read one post and the replies and you are drawing conclusions? Hmmmmm

I split my year between Thailand Vietnam Malaysia and Cambodia. I’m in groups for all four countries. The moderators try to maintain civility but for some reason the Thai groups are often tremendously toxic and the other groups are way less toxic. I suggest you do as I do and simply block any commentor the very first time they are obnoxious. There are pleasant people happy to help here as well. Unfortunately you have to filter out the ignorant miserable people.

It is the twinternet in normal life if you had a idiot who lived on your street everyone knew who it was and avoided them, but on the twinternet the idiot gets to voice opinion, and if the group admits allow it to continue everyone has to scroll on by.

Every time I join a new FB group there is a get to know you period when I learn who to block. It really helps as most people are there for the right reasons.

In every visa group I've been in, in Vietnam and Thailand, there are certain people who just want to act like they're superior or are expats but think it's fun to close the door behind them & tell other expats to f#ck off...it's all the same. But amongst that there is always invaluable information that you can't get off the Immigration Dept's websites...real people's experiences and solutions that are helpful. Block and/or ignore the a$$holes.

You will find that anything Thailand related there are a lot of "experts" and old cranky white dudes who like to be dicks for no reason.

There's not a big enough hammer to pound common sense into stupid people. Just move on😉

I agree with your points and suggest picking out the commenters who are clearly offering accurate information with good intentions. I’ve discovered just a few and pay particular attention to what they write. 👍

There's one born everyday we have to live with them unfortunately.

Expat groups are mostly what you mentioned. Many just looking to argue etc, even if they'd agree with you in person they'll find something to carry on about online. Is what it is, don't let it get under your skin.

There was 1 post, calm down. You don't like it go get help from Reddit.

This Facebook page is an excellent source of knowledge for anyone applying for a visa or living in Thailand, with several very helpful and knowledgeable people that will give you great advice (you will quickly be able to identify them, several are moderators).

When you see comments or posts from abusive type people, simply block them and the problem is solved.

Apparently many of you have never heard of free speech. Maybe where you live it is not allowed but with FB being an American company it is allowed. My suggestion is to ignore things you don't agree with then move on. Freedom of speech is no regulated to protect people's sensitive feelings. Suck it up!!!
Lynnette *******
@Michael ********
the free speech you mention has been eroded in USA recently. Where protecting "someone's" sensitive feelings has resulted in visitors being detained or denied. 🤦

If you're actually being serious and aren't taking the piss, you should know that you don't understand the 1st Amendment. It protects speech from *Govt* interference, not regular people or companies or any other non-governmental entity. JUST the govt. 🙄

@Mic****
Kennedy many of us come from countries with free speech. But free speech is not the same as freedom to be abusive, hateful or unkind.

@Michael ********
Well since you HAD to mention American you kinda muddied up your whole point about free speech. 🤣🤣🤣

@Michael ********
well of course everybody is heard of free speech but there's another thing of being an adult and having adult conversations and being a friendly peaceful person that's trying to help people or get help
Brandon ************
@Michael ********
that's literally not what free speech means at all. But okay

Men often show depression through anger. There are a lot of very unhappy old guys here in Thailand. I have blocked hundreds of them so that my feed becomes more tolerable.

A sign of the times we live in . Be better than them and don’t let it get to you.

Only you should control your emotions and thoughts. Don’t let someone else control them for you

Totally agree

Just make judicious use of the Facebook block feature and you can be rid of the worst offenders in a couple of days.

Unfortunately I'm a mod so even if I block them I still have to see what they post. But at least they can't see my stuff to comment on it.

I'm also new to this group and when I did read this most interesting post I'm sure you're referring to I got myself a bag of popcorn, pmsl and enjoyed the read! The Karens of this planet are just hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣

Unfortunately it’s FB and these types of posts are far too common across communities. Just ignore those posts and focus on the helpful advice given here. We are in Thailand - a paradise - don’t get distracted by silliness
