Is this expat group in Thailand just about drama or is it actually helpful?

Well I just signed up for this group and a lot of things that I'm reading is a bunch of angry people that like to call people names I thought this was a site to help people out not to tell people how stupid they are and to file claims against them with the Thai government and all kinds of stuff is this site just about drama or is it about helping people getting information and giving information.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post raises concerns about the negative dynamics within a Facebook group for expats in Thailand, where the user finds discussions filled with anger and name-calling, rather than helpful advice. Comments from other members suggest a mixed experience, with some recognizing ongoing helpful information while acknowledging the presence of toxic behavior. Many advocate for blocking negative individuals and focusing on constructive advice, while highlighting that such drama is a common issue in online communities.

Hi
@Fra****
, I totally get where you're coming from! 😊 It can be really frustrating when a group that's supposed to be helpful ends up being filled with negativity. The good news is, most of us here are genuinely looking to share helpful info, support each other, and find solutions to common challenges we face. There will always be a few people who get caught up in drama or frustrations, but I believe the main goal of this group is to help each other and share valuable advice. If you ever feel like the negativity is overwhelming, feel free to reach out to the admins or simply focus on the positive posts. There are plenty of kind, supportive people who are more than happy to share their experiences and help out. 🌸 I hope you'll find the info you need and have a better experience moving forward. You're definitely not alone, and we're all here to support each other! 🙌

I agree 100% with the writer. I do try to keep up with changes as they happen but by no means an expert. I'm always interested in how others are managing. Unfortunately there a re s few on this site that should be removed. They give tourists and expats a bad name.

Some people think they are helping but they are actually doing the wrong thing by criticising and being obnoxious I just see if someone needs actual advice and offer to them from my actual real experience

I found I was relying on actual experiences and advice from pages like this as there is no concrete info available from the Thai embassy on the particulars. I know there is some, but some areas are left very grey. And when you are spending a lot on applications, insurance, police clearances, you really want to get it right, first time. Just got my OA in Oz. What stressful time I had. So relieved now.

I split my year between Thailand Vietnam Malaysia and Cambodia. I’m in groups for all four countries. The moderators try to maintain civility but for some reason the Thai groups are often tremendously toxic and the other groups are way less toxic. I suggest you do as I do and simply block any commentor the very first time they are obnoxious. There are pleasant people happy to help here as well. Unfortunately you have to filter out the ignorant miserable people.

It is the twinternet in normal life if you had a idiot who lived on your street everyone knew who it was and avoided them, but on the twinternet the idiot gets to voice opinion, and if the group admits allow it to continue everyone has to scroll on by.

In every visa group I've been in, in Vietnam and Thailand, there are certain people who just want to act like they're superior or are expats but think it's fun to close the door behind them & tell other expats to f#ck off...it's all the same. But amongst that there is always invaluable information that you can't get off the Immigration Dept's websites...real people's experiences and solutions that are helpful. Block and/or ignore the a$$holes.

Expat groups are mostly what you mentioned. Many just looking to argue etc, even if they'd agree with you in person they'll find something to carry on about online. Is what it is, don't let it get under your skin.

This Facebook page is an excellent source of knowledge for anyone applying for a visa or living in Thailand, with several very helpful and knowledgeable people that will give you great advice (you will quickly be able to identify them, several are moderators).

When you see comments or posts from abusive type people, simply block them and the problem is solved.

Apparently many of you have never heard of free speech. Maybe where you live it is not allowed but with FB being an American company it is allowed. My suggestion is to ignore things you don't agree with then move on. Freedom of speech is no regulated to protect people's sensitive feelings. Suck it up!!!

the free speech you mention has been eroded in USA recently. Where protecting "someone's" sensitive feelings has resulted in visitors being detained or denied. 🤦

If you're actually being serious and aren't taking the piss, you should know that you don't understand the 1st Amendment. It protects speech from *Govt* interference, not regular people or companies or any other non-governmental entity. JUST the govt. 🙄

Kennedy many of us come from countries with free speech. But free speech is not the same as freedom to be abusive, hateful or unkind.

Just make judicious use of the Facebook block feature and you can be rid of the worst offenders in a couple of days.

Unfortunately I'm a mod so even if I block them I still have to see what they post. But at least they can't see my stuff to comment on it.
