Hi 👋

Is it necessary to have a Malaysian moto insurance when taking a Thai registered motorbike to Penang for a few days for visa application?

Anything else is necessary than the green book on my name?

Thank you 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
When taking a Thai registered motorbike to Penang for visa application, you are required to have third-party insurance, which can be obtained at the border. Additionally, you will need to visit the motor vehicle department to get a letter translating your green book, which costs around 100 baht, as well as English stickers for your plate.

when u buy insurance

BEFORE immigration at Wang prachan crossing,right hand side

AFTER immigration at Sadao ,right hand side

IF ur only going to border bounce,walk across:

so if I can do a border run, then I park my motorbike at the border and just walk back-and-forth?

I need insurance if I want to take my motorbike to Malaysia, even for a few hours?

I will try to do a Border run at wang prachan instead of going to Penang for tourist visa.

Do I need to get a Malaysian insurance if I just do a Border run in an hour or so?
Richard *********

I live on Koh Phangan. Do I get those 2 documents at the same place that they register vehicle?There isn’t a motor vehicle dept other than: Limpiphong Vehicle Checking Center.
Pascal ********
Yes you need a third party insurance, you can get it at the border
Richard *********
wang prachan is an easy border, ZERO reason to use an Agent!!!

NEVER Been asked show Thai License
Pascal ********
@Richard ********
The only reason to use an agent is all documents in hand before passing the border and not waiting an hour plus to get it done at the check point just for few extra Baht
Pascal ********
@Richard ********
Now you need to fill up custom form about the bike and you (green book,passport and license to be on that form) so if not have :) :)

@Vincent **********
By the way if you have only a French driving license I don't know if you can get an insurance for Malaysia and for Thailand if you have a problem you will not be cover
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
Could be but taking a risk if the officer ask you for an international or thai one

@Vincent **********
Yes she is good , she will get you the insurance and road tax but she is not a custome officer.

so having a French driving licence could still be an issue at the border?
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
I don't know, normally in Thailand you suppose to drive with a Thai or international, same for Malaysia, Malaysia recognized the Thai driving license but I don't know about the French

@Pascal *******
 yes, only after asking this question I realized I may be able to do more border runs than 3 per year by going to wang prachan and paying a fee.

So border runs at Wang Prachan are done so easily paying and walking?
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
Only walking nothing to pay

do you know if over there they are cool to make your pass for the 4th time in one year a border bounce? The official rule is three times max.
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
No idea, I am not a tourist in Thailand , I am working so personally I can pass any number of times, it all depends on the officers , some let you go back and other may tell you to go to the embassy of the country you are coming

If you get your insurance at the border you will be stock for an hour plus and after you get your insurance you will get the Malay road tax (free) which is another half an hour
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
The Thai side will not help you so much , Personally I use a broker to do it for me but it take few days as I need to provide everything to the broker via line and the broker send to my home address in Thailand and I pass the border in few minutes.

@Pascal *******
do you think the simplest way is the broker or going to want Prachan? If the broker, could you share the contact that you have? How much does it cost?
Pascal ********
@Vincent **********
You will need the following:

3 photos from your bike : front, rear, side.

Photo of your Thai driving license

a photo from your green book (thai version)

Your English translation of your green book from the DLT

If you have around 10 days before your departure better use the broker if you leaving in few days maybe too late

OK few things , Sadao is a messy border so busy and boring but easy to get your Malaysian insurance, Wang Prachan is great place to pass the border , nice twisty road. the insurance place is on the Thai side a small office on the right side before the check point
