Hi there, anyone here applied the DTV from China successfully? I heard it is quite hard there
Answer summary
The question revolves around whether individuals holding a Non-O retirement visa are required to show 20,000 THB or its equivalent in cash upon entry into Thailand. While technically required for tourists and visa-exempt entries, numerous expats in the discussion assert that those with valid retirement visas usually do not face this requirement. Many share their personal experiences of having entered Thailand without being asked for cash, indicating that the rule is rarely enforced for retirement visa holders. However, some recommend carrying the cash as a precaution, as immigration officers have discretionary authority and may ask for proof of funds if they have any doubts. Overall, while it's not a strict necessity, having the cash on hand could serve as insurance against potential issues during entry.

“I have a 1st-year Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) visa (Multiple Entry)”

*** NO, you don’t have a Retirement Visa.

There is nothing such as a retirement visa with a multi re-entry permit, since October 2023 when Thai embassies discontinued to issue it

That 90-days Retirement Visa you started with, became invalid when you entered Thailand on it. You got stamped in for a 90-days stay permit.

A visa is something like a permit for ENTERING a country, a stay permit is the permission for STAYING inside the country.

Then you got issued a “1-year extension of the 90-days stay permit based on retirement”

*** For this “one-year extended stay permit” you bought a multi re-entry permit for 3800 Baht.

*** This is my usual short explanation of the difference between a stay permit and a visa

It is Thai Law. Read the info on Thai Embassy. Not 100% sûre it appuies to all entries/ visas.

But my question, why does having 20 000 Baht ( in any major currency) bother you to such an extent?? This 20 000 will rapidly be spent in small shops .transport etc. Lots of small business prefer cash.

I’m not sure how things are now, when I came in a year ago, they did not ask for a single thing. Actually, the red customs part was closed so I walked right through the other part.

I have heard that they are cracking down on the ฿20,000 to enter so I would probably just get that from the airport. You’re leaving from to be safe.

Otherwise, it sounds like you’re OK

David Perrelet you are partially wrong. First, the income/pension must be over 65,000 THB. And second: you can only use your pension if your embassy in Bangkok is still issuing an income affidavit. If your embassy does not legalize your income, you need the miimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account. Citizens from USA, Canada, UK, Denmark, Australia and Norway cannot use their pensions as financial proof, they need the bank deposit, at least for the first year of the 1-year extension of stay
Ralph *******

As part of the Application, you would have had to email Bank Statements, so they know already. Just remember to transfer 800,000thb within the first Three months after arrival. The other thing not to forget to do, is link your Thai Phone Number to your Bank Account, otherwise you could get your account frozen.

Lol you are reading too much into it and reading posts from people who do not have a clue. You have a Non O retirement extension. You do not have to show 20k baht on entry, nor do you need to show a flight out of Thailand. On entry just make sure they stamp you for the end date of the Retirement extension and not give you a 60 day visa exempt stamp.

It's always a case-by-case for any dealing with immigration in Thailand. If you can get seven $100 U.S. bills that'll be a very slim, lightweight carry and an easy way to cover the requirement. Chances are high you won't be asked by the officer to 'show him/her the money', but if asked to credit/debit cards and account balances in banking apps are not going to cut it. And you won't be allowed to go to any ATM, and there are no ATMs inside the area before you clear immigration. Up to you, but seven $100s is insurance. The Thai Visa Center response among the replies here is spot on.

Just have the equivalent amount of cash on hand.

This requirement has existed for decades, and while it may not be checked often, it is still something immigration officers can use if they decide they do not want to let you enter.

A lot of people confidently say, "They never ask," or "You don't need it." That may be true most of the time. But if an officer does ask, you can be sure they will take it seriously. Not having it gives them a valid reason to turn you away.

And honestly, it could be for something as petty as you looking at them the wrong way, them not liking your attitude, them being in a bad mood, jealousy, or any other emotional reason. At the end of the day, if you are walking around without the required amount, that officer is fully within their right to deny you entry.

It is such an easy requirement to meet. Most travelers can carry 20,000 baht in cash, or the equivalent amount in another major currency.

So the question is, why even risk it?

Yes, normally this is not an issue at all. That being said, have we seen it happen before? Yes.

At the end of the day, immigration officers have broad discretionary authority under this section, and the rule is not limited to one specific visa type. Someone could argue that the visa itself is evidence of financial means, but if an officer wanted to rely on this section, they technically could.

The only time we have personally seen this happen was in an extreme situation where the traveler was being very rude. Either way, does it hurt to have the cash on hand? No.

This requirement is clearly stated in the last signed Royal Gazette announcement on this issue, published over 20 years ago:

Having the Visa helps assure you are granted entry. It doesn't not guarantee it. Most likely you are fine with the visa only but it would be wise for you to travel with 20,000 baht (or equivalent), print out of the your accommodation or the first few days, and a print out of your onward travel. The most recent version of the Thailand Interior Ministry Notice/Announcement about Physical Cash in Hand Requirements for travelers making Entry into Thailand, dated 8 May 2000 and published in Thailand's Royal Gazette on 9 June 2000, is nothing new with THB ฿20,000.- Thai Baht per person physical cash in hand

The physical Banknotes do NOT need to be in Thai Baht, but any major international currency that is easily convertible to Thai Baht or otherwise

At current foreign exchange rates, ฿20,000.- Thai Baht is over USD $600 Dollars nowadays

A single EUR 500 € Euro banknote ( 2 Euro banknotes = 550 € Euros ) or a single CHF 1000 Swiss Francs banknote is definitely sufficient

To all of you here yelling and shouting out your wishful curses: check yourself out Section 12 of the Immigration Act and Notification of the Ministry of Interior dated May 8, 2000. Yes, it singles out Tourist and Transit VOAs for the explicit 20k/10k thresholds. However, because Section 12 broadens the scope to any alien "having no appropriate means of living," immigration officers have the umbrella legal authority to apply a baseline check to any traveler if they suspect they cannot support themselves.

Because a Non-O visa is a higher-tier entry category than a tourist visa, officers use the tourist threshold (20,000 THB) as the absolute baseline definition of an "appropriate means of living" across the board.

And YES. They CAN ask for the proof every time you enter. They have the authority to do so. Doesn’t matter what you’ve “already proven” while applying.

The 20k cash requirement is for tourism entries so it is very unlikely you will be asked on a long term visa/extension
John **********

Technically you do, everyone has to show they can support themselves on entry, but it would be highly unlikely you would be asked.

utter rubbish stop talking nonsense he’s proven he has the funds by having a retirement visa, there’s no way he will get asked a financial requirement he’s already proven that.

Wayne Lucas You are free to do whatever you want. However the requirement is in the immigration law.

Personally, I have entered Thailand more times than I can count - and I have never been asked. But that doesn't mean that they couldn't next time. And we are talking about roughly USD 610.00.

Robin Banks No. The answer is correct. Rarely enforced, but at the discretion of the IO you encounter, they have the legal authority to ask for it.

Wayne Lucas You need to check the requirements of the Thai Embassy regarding entry into Thailand for ANY foreigner. While I personally don't think they will check it for a Non O visa holder, the requirement has been in force for many years. It always depends on the IO you encounter - if for whatever reason they are suspicious, or you are just unlucky, they are within their rights to ask you for it. After all, we are talking about Thailand and as most of us know, rules and regulations sometimes don't make sense - but you still need to follow them.

Andy Kay no they don’t and they won’t even ask because of the existing retirement visa requirements have been meet.

You are supporting your opinion by a tourist visa statement his visa clearly states retirement.

Stop scaring others when you don’t know

Jim Skinner what a load of bull. The visa is non O retired. Retirement is required and already proven. His visa is sufficient to enter.

Technically, the requirement can still apply even to retirement visa holders.

It is rarely enforced in this type of situation, but it is absolutely possible. If it happens to you, simply telling the officer that you have a retirement visa and believe that should be enough is unlikely to help. At that point, they may still proceed with denying entry.

In most cases, if they are asking to see the cash, it is because they already have concerns and are looking for a reason to refuse entry. They may also be expecting that you did not prepare for this requirement.

The safest option is simple: carry the cash.

Yes, you are still technically required to show 20,000 Thai Baht (or the equivalent in another major currency).

Phil Beer No you are not, the stated amount is only a requirement for the visa exempt scheme. Those with a visa may get a random check which would be subject to assessment regarding "means of living". Different situations, different checks.

Sandy Fraser - not only for visa-exempt entries. I am here on a TR (Tourist Visa) visiting family and so not on the visa-exempt entry. Conditions for the TR still state you may be asked to show THB
