I might sound snarky but what is it with this culture of someone posting a vague, “I want to move to Thailand give me recommendations” and everyone jumps on with 90+ comments.

Why not share some context about your age, what you know about Thailand and places you have on your list, what country you are coming from, what information you are actually seeking. You already say moving on a retirement visa but have you taken any steps toward a visa.

Thought? Is not much of a question but you got my answer above.

I regret selling my house and moving here 20 years ago now that I've gotten older and developed major health problems. If I was back in America I could been on Medicare and had coverage for pre-existing conditions going into my '70s, expat health insurance is very dodgy and they can drop you anytime. Remember living in a foreign country you were not a citizen you have no rights. Now that I'm older I don't go to bars or any entertainment venues, life as you go into your 60's-70's can become very difficult very quickly. Living alone in a foreign country and in bad health after having a back injury and two strokes is a nightmare.

First bit of advice as mentioned here is you need to actually visit the place to start off with.

Need to workout what you are going to do once in Thailand so what are your interests hobbies.

Maybe look at areas that cater for that.

You really need to sit down and crunch the numbers on the income part to see if it's achievable.

As people have mentioned on here you need to basically have the 800'000 Thai baht ready to rock and roll to be transferred into a Thai bank account to be seasoned once that is sorted.

Also if you can hit close to the
*****
Thai baht income then it will give you a lot of flexibility and a good lifestyle.

I think another thing that is overlooked is what is your worst case scenario plan?

Meaning if so some unknown reason shit hits the fan can you extricate yourself out of a sticky situation if you have to.

Not saying it will but having a back up plan could come in handy.

It doesn’t cost much to use an agent but they explain it better.

Learn the culture, don't expect same rules.

Research online with Thai Embassy about types of visas suited to you.

If single over 50 ,800,000 b needed 3 mths beforehand.

O visa needs no health insur. but OA visa needs health insurance.

Check website.

Bring no more than needed. Cheap here.

First thing before deciding is to determine what and how health care will work for you.

Many of use our “self-insured” (separate health funds) due to overall coverage after the insurance underwriter reviews the medical history.
Frank ********

Ron Pad how does self insured work
Ron *****
Ron *****
Frank, you need to understand your health condition and there expenses to begin. Next, educate yourself about changing your lifestyle to improve your health and eliminate all risky physical activities.

Your new life may be boring but, this is what many have to do, your choice.

Now, setup a savings account exclusively for any medical emergencies you can predict based on your medical condition.

If you don’t have enough funds, reassess your best path somewhere else in the world.
Andy ********

Frank Romano if you have not got a medical war chest of 5M Baht if you use private hospitals and 2M.if you use Government Hospitals your oprions will reduce rapidly if you get seriously ill or have a major accident.

Personally I think self insurance is a risky business if you haven't decided that you want to die in Thailand. For the record I am self insured.

As you don't tell us much about your situation, let me give you a few general pieces of advice: 1) First, move here temporarily for at least six to nine months. During that time, rent and move to a few locations to get a feel for what it is like to live here. 2) Ensure that you have solid health and accident insurance that can be extended until you reach a ripe age. 3) To live comfortably here, you either need capital or a regular monthly income to support your lifestyle. 4) If you are single and are eventually looking forward to hooking up with a Thai lady, stay away from all bar girls. Thailand is full of well-educated single women of all ages who are looking for a companion.

Apply for a visa at the Thai embassy in your country.
John **********
John **********
There are at least 4 different visas referred to as retirement visas so you need to do a bit of research. The LTR Wealthy Pensioner visa is the best if you qualify for it and the 90 day Non-O visa followed by 12 month extensions is the most common.

For the 90 day Non-O option you should get it in your home country before you travel to Thailand. Unless your embassy in Thailand still issues income certificates, which many don't, you'll need to open a Thai bank account when you arrive, deposit a minimum of 800k baht in it and once it's been in the bank for 2 months you apply for a 12 month extension of stay.
