Is a multiple entry tourist visa a better option for returning to Thailand after a long stay?

My experience. I have been in Thailand more than 120 days this year with 2 extension. Came back yesterday from Vietnam where I went to apply for a tourist visa. Immigration didnt ask anything, I asked them if a tourist visa was ok to come back again, the IO said to me to apply for a multy entry that is easier. Long queue at immigration tho.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post recounts a user's experience of re-entering Thailand after over 120 days of stay, during which they received two extensions and applied for a tourist visa in Vietnam. The immigration officer suggested a multiple entry visa for easier future entries, and the user noted a long queue at immigration. Comments from the community express a mix of support, caution about visa usage frequency, and practical advice regarding visa exemptions.

That makes sense and is fully consistent with how this is applied in practice. With a total stay of around 119 days (according to your last comment), you are still below what would normally be considered excessive use of the visa exemption system, which is why you were not questioned on re entry. The IO’s comment about a multiple entry visa is simply practical advice for the future, not an indication that you did anything wrong this time. Once you start approaching the higher end of total stay within a rolling cycle, a tourist visa or a multiple entry option just reduces friction and uncertainty at the border.

I described exactly what is what: that from a certain point on even tourist visas don't help. A tourist visa does not grant you the right to enter. You can be refused entry even on a valid visa. I read in over a dozen groups, and I have seen it reported

in my case, with less than 150 days a year in Thailand, with six months outside the country between all the IO i asked, immigration in Chiang said is totally fine. Actually also without a visa should be fine, but I did what immigration told be and worked great.

A tourist visa can always help to some extent, as it gives a slightly higher level of confidence for entry, but it does not guarantee entry. It can, however, make things smoother when you start approaching the upper end of what is normally accepted. In your case, two visa exempt stays without extension (around 119 days total) combined with a long stay outside Thailand would very likely also have allowed another visa exempt entry. Beyond that point, though, it would have become pure gambling without a visa, which is why an METV would have been the best solution from the outset, and essentially what the IO was trying to convey.

that should be okay, less than 150 days per rolling one year and time abroad indicate that you are a "real" tourist. And regarding what the Immigration officer said, I would take it with a grain of salt. This is only a proposal from one officer. Many other officers may not share this view. We never know

there are no rules that say how often or for how long you can enter Thailand on a visa exemption. There are only guidelines that say you cannot misuse touristic entries for a longstay within one year. It is left to the individual discretion of the Immigration officer you are facing

s reply that even tourist visa are not meant for continued use within a one-year period. There are limits to those as well. Many border cowboys don't draw a difference between visa-exemption and tourist visas in case you start to accumulate those

You got lucky. Even on multiple single entry tourist visa within one year there is no guarantee of entry. Some officers count and warn you, others will tolerate it. You never know
