How crowded are Etihad flights currently, especially in economy class after the pandemic?

Afternoon all.

Flying out with Etihad in two days time.

I've "bid" for business class seats - Etihad are now saying I need to up my bid as there are 15 of us bidding for 4 seats.

I know business class has more than 4 seats - I think more like 24 on the 787. I suspect this is a ploy to get people to pay more.

My question is how busy are the flights at the moment? Is economy packed like pre Covid or are they sparse with space between other travellers and the opportunity to lie down, stretch out etc...

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler is seeking insights about the current busyness of Etihad flights, particularly whether economy class is crowded compared to pre-COVID times. They have bid for business class seats but noticed multiple bidders for limited seats, prompting concerns that this is a tactic to increase prices. Comments suggest that flights are busy, especially for the last available business class seats, and there are uncertainties about the nature of the bidding process as well as availability in other classes.

**Update guys**

Just had an email form Etihad to say my bid has been successful for a "business class studio". They look forward to welcoming me on board.

After several emails asking if I want to up my bid as there are only limited seats etc...I could of kept upping it and never known.

I'll update later once on board to see just how many of us there really are in the Business cabin.....

Total scam. If anyone else is thinking of doing this set you bid at £500 and do not budge!

You'll likely get your seat.

It's just a ploy to sell all their seats. They also offer you to purchase the seat next to you in economy. My neice did this on a trip to Australia and a guy came and sat beside her and the flight attendant just said sorry flight full

My thoughts exactly. I'm not not budging on my current bids and will be surprised if there are 15 of us bidding over a remaining 4 seats. If that's the case, how on earth have the other 26 or so seats been booked when there was no option to book them directly up until recently days. They are now charging £1400 per leg - if booked directly. Who on earth pays that amount for business? That's nigh on 1st class prices. If I were to do all four legs, there and back at that price it would cost £5600. Absolute madness.

They'll be selling scratch cards on board next 😄

I'm now receiving independent emails asking if I'd like to upgrade....If seats are taken, and there's 15 of us fighting over 4 seats surely Etihad wouldn't be sending out independent emails asking if i'd like to upgrade...

I just tried it via the link and it took me back to the bidding process!

Scam!!!

set a budget your happy to pay and send it , the emails are standard practice leading up to the flight

Their approach seems akin to a Dutch auction ? I usually use Emirates or Qatar Airlines . The only trouble I usually endure is logging into Emirates /Netflights booking process . I would tell Etihad politely where to shove the Auction idea ... .Good luck with the journey.😃

Thanks Ivan. It's the first time I've come across it. Normally I fly with Qatar, never any issues.

What I don't understand is there are clearly more than 4 seats available. Let's say for arguments sake there's 30 - give or take a few here and there...What's happened to the other 26 if we are all bidding up until 3 hours before the flight....There was no option from the beginning to book business so I don't believe those seats have been booked and taken.

We'll see what happens....

Business had 3 patrons, economy was 70% full. Although my friend had a long haul where economy premium was basically empty with almost everyone getting 3 seats to themselves.

Did you bid more than £500 ?

Bang on for both legs.

If they reject my bids I'll perhaps try again at the airport. If it just an automated system that does this then hopefully there will be seats left - at a reasonable price.

@Daniel *********
I know a few people who have got it for £500 for the longest leg only, fyi 🤞 let us know how you get on 👍

Got it for £500 - nothing mentioned about the second leg from Abu Dhabi to Bkk though. I'm assuming I'll get that too. Fingers crossed.

brilliant 👍

Yeah, funnily enough the second leg to BKK via Phuket seems to be OK. I'll update once I'm boarded. Probably from 48E, with legs up under my chin, elbows on my chest and a screaming baby behind me. 🤣🤣🤣
Blaise ****
Curious which flights you are on and how much you bid. I am considering doing the same for one of the legs of my flight

@Blaise ***
Etihad out of MAN to BKK on NYE - I think about 13:00 departure. I've bid £500 extra for each leg, on top of £450 economy....
Ray ***********
Can you check the available seats on their website or app? With Air Canada I can check how many business class seats are available. In my case 12 out of 30 are available

can you see the seat map of his planned flight?

More emails asking if I'd like to up my bid today - not sure why it would matter if there's 15 of us bidding and mines at £500.....

Other than that I've had a nice upgrade at the Raddison. Hoping a sign of "good" things to come....🤣
Ray ***********
@James *******
no I can't.

Economy only, and even their extra legroom seats aren't available to buy or upgrade off bat. Again, have to bid. I've never come across this before.

All seems a bit fishy to me...

We'll see, may come back to bite me in the arse. I'm not budging with my bids. If there's such a demand and people are willing to pay way over the odds fair enough.
Daniel **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Exactly what I thought. I'll find out in about 24 hours time. Funny that they're now saying still 4 sears available - despite there now been 13 of us allegedly in a bidding war!
James ********
@Daniel *********
possibly
@Raymond ********
can look at the flight seat map... what is date of flight and flight number ?
Michael ********
@Daniel *********
its a con ive done it before and ended up with 3 other people in business class cu@ts

Planes are packed…you’re bidding on the last 4 seats available in business class
Garrett ***********
"I know business class has more than 4 seats "

You're bidding on the available REMAINING business class seats, the ones they were unable to sell at regular price.
Daniel **********

@Garrett **********
Unfortunately with Etihad there's no option to buy business class off the bat - otherwise I would and have done in the past.

They now have this "bidding system" where anyone who wants to fly business has to bid, from the outset. You book economy, then put your bid in. I therefore placed my bids when booking economy, there was no other option.

I feel like todays emails are just an automated system and way of getting those who wish to fly business class to pay a bit more....

Surely the planes aren't rammed full with 15 people bidding over the last 4 seats in business class....
Dave ***********
@Daniel *********
of course there is an option to buy business class seats with Etihad - even just looked at the date you mentioned and there are business class seats for sale on that date.
Daniel **********

@Dave **********
Correct. There is now an option to buy directly. There wasn't six weeks ago. The price is now £1400 - just to Abu Dhabi.

About the same from Abu Dhabi to Bkk - 3k to BKK is ridiculous. They're charging 1st class rates.

Also I see there's 4 seats left....God knows, no idea how it all works. I'm sure there's method in their madness 💰 🤑 💸 💲 🪙 🤯🤣

Ok, interesting. That does surprise me. I've naively thought the planes may be nowhere near full. I guess time will tell......

you will be surprised I flew in on a 777ER and 99.5% of seats in economy were filled
