For the ‘wise’ people on this page….. How do you manage to transfer money from your home bank to your Wise account? I keep running into daily transfer limits, having the bank freeze my account to protect me from fraud. (From myself) I am having trouble just moving enough to fund the $800k let alone enough to buy a property! Canadian banks have become very risk adverse and block any larger transactions. Would be keen to hear your stories about this.
Answer summary
Transferring money from your home bank to a Wise account can be challenging due to daily limits and fraud prevention measures by Canadian banks. Many users suggest informing your bank about your overseas plans to avoid account freezes. Alternatives mentioned include direct withdrawals from ATMs using debit cards, utilizing services like Charles Schwab, or using the SWIFT system for bank transfers. Some emphasize the importance of comparing exchange rates and fees when making larger transfers, recommending to initiate transfers directly from your bank to a Thai bank account for higher efficiency.

I use AI extensively.... here is the response I got for your question. Fidelity is by far the best option...

If you’re transferring a large amount of money—say $30,000—from the U.S. to Thailand, don’t get distracted by “no transfer fee” advertising. The only number that really matters is how many baht actually arrive in the Thai account. Wise is still very competitive, but for transfers this large I would compare Wise and OFX with a direct USD wire from a brokerage. Fidelity is especially interesting because it charges $0 for bank wires; Vanguard’s published wire fee is $10, and Schwab charges $15 online or $25 otherwise. The key is to wire U.S. dollars and let the Thai bank convert them using its TT (telegraphic transfer) buying rate rather than paying the brokerage to convert the dollars to baht. Before sending $30,000, simply compare Wise’s “recipient gets” amount, OFX’s quote, and what the Thai bank would give you at its current USD TT rate. Ignore the advertised fees and use whichever route puts the most baht in the account. On $30,000, even a small difference in the exchange rate can mean hundreds of dollars.

I just use my debt card to withdraw money from my account in the USA, no problem at all.

Just use the SWIFT system. Simple and reliable and been around for years.

Just wondering, can you get a cashier's check from your bank and deposit in a Thai bank?

Just go into your local bank in Canada and transfer the amount you want.

DO NOT transfer any money to a WISE account. You use Wise to transfer FROM your account TO your account. Do not keep a balance with Wise. Or you will become a member of this group Wise (Transferwise) Scam Victims We use Wise monthly to transfer a small sum to Thailand. For a larger sum, it will take longer. It would be easier to do a one time bank transfer (Swift) from your CA bank directly to your TH bank and be done with it. Yes, the fee will be marginally higher.

Did you let your bank know you were traveling overseas? We went into our bank and advised them in person before we left our home country to move here so we have never had an issue with funds transfers.

In the case like you have described I personally had my home banker arrange a Swift transfer to the Thai bank.

After I opened my wise account I did a wire transfer of the 800,000 from my home bank to my Wise account with no problem. Once I opened my Thai bank account I was able to transfer money directly from Wise into the Thai account for my Visa. Never have I had problems accessing funds from any of my bank accounts since arriving in December.
