Hi to all UK expats .

I’m retiring to Thailand next year and need any advice from you on which are the best uk banks to hold an account for when I no longer live in the uk ( for private pension to be paid into plus savings) I already have a Thai bank account and property.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on advice for UK expats who are retiring to Thailand regarding which UK banks to use for holding accounts, especially for receiving pension payments and managing savings. Key suggestions include using banks like Nationwide, Santander, First Direct, and HSBC, with recommendations for utilizing Wise for money transfers due to ease of access and favorable conditions for living abroad. The importance of maintaining a UK address for account management is highlighted, but alternatives for those without a UK address are also discussed.

Have you ever tryed to stay 3-4 month in Thailand ?

If not, you should go with a touristvisa 60 days, plus 30 days extension before burming the bridges to UK.

Every day life is much different than a couple of weeks holiday.

I keep my old UK bank, added Wise account which has a UK address too. Transfer sterling to Wise, convert to Baht and then send to you Thai account. Works like a dream.

Every transfer to Wise can be automated, conversion automated and even to Thai account automated.

Have a look at HSBC they have a account called global money and they don’t charge anything for sending money out to Thailand and the card is for 6 years 👍

You can register a foreign address with Nationwide but you will have to open it first with a UK address and then change it later to your address in Thailand.

Nationwide

I think David is correct for now but others have been caught out, can depend what you do from the account and whether using app or online and your credit/debit card use in Thailand over an extended period of time.

Revolut

@Paul ******
Revolut has no banking license in the UK and is very unlikely to get one in the near future.

plus their cards don't have chips in case you need cash quick

@Will ***********
that makes no difference. You can use Revolut in the UK and worldwide. However given the choice I would recommend Wise if we are talking about fintech companies rather than traditional banks.

First Direct. Apply now and get a £175 switch bonus. They don’t care where you live as far as I know.

Halifax and Santander have no problem with abroad addresses. However, Santander will send renewed/replacement cards to Thailand. Halifax won’t.

strongly suggest you keep your point of presence in the uk. Use uk bank and Wise to transfer here
Ron ******
Keep a UK address and change account details before you get here, it's not a guarantee of success and obvious account activity sourced from Thailand is a "giveaway" so use Wise for money transfers and don't buy or withdraw money using your banks debit or credit cards.

Uk banks are gradually closing the accounts of those who live abroad. Use Wise.

hi , I have tried opening an account at Bangkok bank in London with no success! ( I have a Bangkok bank account in Thailand) so how do you transfer to the London branch, and will that automatically go into my account in Thailand?

Thanks for the helping hand .

You can send money from your UK Bank account to a Bangkok Bank account in Thailand. You may also send money to any other bank in Thailand. In order to use our service you will need to register with Bangkok Bank’s London branch to obtain a unique reference code to send money via Bangkok Bank’s London and Faster Payments or BACS, using your UK’s bank Online Banking or Counter Services.

Process

You will need to first register and obtain a unique reference code from Bangkok Bank’s London branch to send funds to Thailand via Bangkok Bank’s London branch.

Complete the Client Remittance Registration Form to sign up the service with Bangkok Bank’s London branch and submit the form with two forms of identification as listed in Bangkok Bank’s London branch’s Identity Verification Guide.

Visit Bangkok Bank’s London branch with the original documents or send the verified copies of your completed Client Remittance Registration Form and identity documents to Bangkok Bank’s London branch at Exchequer Court, 33 St. Mary Axe, London EC3A 8BY, UK.

Upon receipt of your completed details and after the registration process, Bangkok Bank’s London branch will contact you and provide you with your unique reference code and payment instructions.

yeah , I don’t have a Bangkok bank account in London either , it’s been a long time since I set it up over 11 years .. if if I remember correctly you go to the BKK London bank web site and there’s an online transfer link using them as a link from your uk bank - London - BKK bank Thailand .. then ( in my case going into my Santander account and setting up payment to the given code number ) ..

@Anthony ********
Bangkok Bank London is not a retail bank, but maybe its possible to use them th facilities a uk thailand transfer. Presumably from Bangkok bank london to Bangkok is an intrabank transfer.
