TLDR : Answer Summary
Obtaining a B2 Visa for a female friend from Thailand has become increasingly challenging, as many applicants face denials due to strict scrutiny from U.S. consular officers. Common reasons for visa denial include insufficient ties to Thailand, such as lack of stable employment or financial resources, as well as the perception that single women may overstay in the U.S. It's also noted that having a boyfriend or strong relationship with a U.S. citizen can negatively impact the application, as it raises suspicion about the intent to return to Thailand. Due to Trump's policies, visa approvals for Thai nationals are more challenging, leading many to recommend applying for a marriage or K-1 Visa instead.

Most Thai applicants are rejected for a U.S. B-2 visa under Section 214(b) because the consular officer is not convinced they will return to Thailand after their trip. The U.S. Department of State requires every applicant to prove strong “ties” to their home country, and rejections usually happen when those ties appear weak or unclear. This can include unstable employment, lack of a steady income, or running a business that is not well-documented. Applicants with low bank balances, inconsistent financial records, or unclear sources of funds may also raise concerns about their ability to support the trip. Another common issue is weak travel history—if someone has never traveled abroad or only to nearby countries, the officer may doubt their credibility as a genuine tourist. In some cases, answers during the interview do not match the DS-160 form, or the applicant gives vague or overly rehearsed responses, which can reduce trust. Finally, if the purpose of travel is not clear—such as saying “just visit” without a concrete plan—or if the applicant has close relatives in the U.S. without strong reasons to return to Thailand, the officer may suspect potential overstaying, leading to rejection.

And I did my girlfriend's of 4 yrs did her visa and with checking. Check business and tourist. Not the tourist and medical. USA dont want a bill. Its easy. She got a 1 yr. Come and gone home. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, USA immigration automatically assumes every Thai lady is a prostitute , it’s down to you and the lady in question to supply work history and a letter from her employer that confirms her position within a company and that she will return, if you can’t supply work history it’s the default position, Prostitute.

My friend had a long-time girlfriend who spoke perfect English and had a house. He went all over the world, including America, giving business advice. His girlfriend tried three years in a row to get a 10 year visa. The same guy turned it down every time. On the fourth time, he struggled with thai again and was about to turn her down again, and she said look, your thai is terrible. Why don't we speak in English. He just gave her a long walk and a long hesitation and gave her a 10 year stamp

If they know she has a US boyfriend that really hurts her chances. In any application for a US visa THE PRESUMPTION IS THAT THE PERSON WANTS TO IMMIGRATE THERE. And with you there, that is a strong reason for her to stay in US. She must have a substantial tie back to Thailand, such as substantial property or assets, a child, etc., for a successful visa application.

We had a plan to visit LA, Canada and Hawaii.

We live in Thailand, I’m Swedish, my wife Thai and our son both.

My wife used a company to do the visa, as I understood that they also have a travel agency and provide the correct documents, or as I saw it a manual for how to do the visa. It’s was allot of pages and documents to provide but after she been at embassy aso she told me. They didn’t ask all that, it’s was easy to do.

She needs to have a job in Thailand and own property.

The US assumes she is going to overstay and not return. She has to provide solid reasons to prove she won't.

I spoke to 3 different visa attorneys and everyone of them told me without these 2 things (job & property) her B1 or B2 visa was 99% certain of being denied. The only realistic option is a K1 marriage or fiance visa. These visas approval are based more on your finances and ability to take responsibility for the visa applicant. But the processing time on those is 10 - 14 months.

Good luck.

Ken Pemberton Yes but only for a specific class. As of January 2026, the U.S. government has introduced new restrictions: immigrant visa issuances for Thai nationals have been paused under a policy targeting countries with high rates of public assistance usage. Importantly, nonimmigrant visas (like tourist B1/B2 visas) are still available, but approval has become more difficult, with stricter scrutiny during interviews

It’s not easy. Very difficult for a single female from Thailand to be approved. My wife, at the time fiancé, was denied twice in the span of one year. The interviewers did not even look at her supporting documents. By the 3rd try we were already married, interviewer looked over all her supporting paperwork, still denied, told her to apply for a green card, which we didn’t want or need. She applied, one year later she was approved. Made our visit, waited on green card and SS card to arrive, then returned the green card and applied for the 10yr visa. Have been in and out of the US several times since. Time for another 10yr, hopefully all goes well.

work/days off schedule. Neither of us had an intention to live in the US. It was her 3rd visa attempt, interview told her she was applying for wrong visa. He said to apply for “marriage visa” and best to use an agent. So actually denied 3 times. So we went through an agent to apply for the “marriage visa” which was for the Green Card. They are the ones that told us once we have the Green Card, can be easily surrendered and converted to the 10 yr visa. Was all an expensive ordeal. Flights and hotels for agent and consulate visits plus fees….

Now happily married, living in Thailand and travel to the US occasionally. Now time to try and renew or reapply for another 10 yrs. She has proved she’s not a runaway illegal immigrant threat.

Wrong on all counts. I was a medical volunteer here long before your first visit . I learned Thai decades ago.

4% of my 401K and SS is a little over 7k a month. I spend way less than that though.

My Thai friend of several decades bought some property for me, then gave me the Usufruct. They helped me get a great building team and I'm going to finish this 300 square m home with a 143 square meter balcony by Oct 15.

I sing in Thai and became friends with one of Thailand's most famous Luuk Thung singers.

I have a great life out here. It's simple but joyous. I have a hot country girl that is awesome. She's never worked in a bar, has zero tattoos, doesn't smoke and is the happiest person I've ever seen.

We go to her village events, hang out with her family, Mor Lam concerts and out to the reservoir with my dogs. I don't drink or go to the bars.

Now I know you'll believe none of it. What the delicious part is what you believe doesn't change anything about my reality. :D :D

You're only here because you're bitter about not being here. Everything you say is just projection.

Martin Drazen I've known a number of Thai citizens in the US many of them were overstays but one individual stands out he was born in Thailand went to the states became citizen and now wants to return to Thailand he has his family records and everything but a valid Thai passport, he was told he didn't qualify because he it's too old.

He says he thinks the Thai government doesn't want him to take advantage of the healthcare in Thailand for the elderly strange isn't it

Alison Cherry Standen We're getting rid of more and more people like you. So it's getting better and better as time goes on. Over the past four years, the number of New Zealanders aged 30-50 emigrating has more than doubled – from 18,000 to 43,000 – fueled by rising living costs and a weakening job market. Maybe you should worry more about your own sad country instead of making brainless remarks about others.

Brian Brick It’s always been difficult—I’ve known that since I was young.

I was lucky that my dad was legally in the U.S. back in the ’70s, and he was able to apply for my green card when I was 12.

But now it’s so much harder. Even my half brother can’t come visit. They require you to show a certain amount of money in your bank account before they’ll even consider giving you a visa.

They are no longer being called illegal immigrants now. Liberals prefer, "Unauthorized Immigrant" or even, "foreign national". All your friend needs to do is cross the border somehow and she will be afforded more privileges and benefits than citizens. She won't even have to work.

Just the way you word this shows you already have a problem.

YOU cannot get anyone a tourist visa to the US. Only THAT PERSON can get their own visa to the US. You have no part of it. Nothing you can say or do or show will change that. They must qualify themselves, based on their own merits, and their own situation. You being a part of that does not affect the application, and may actually hurt it.

exactly they have to get their own tourist visa but if he plans on marrying this woman or a cr1 Visa or even a k-1 Visa which is a fiance visa he would have to show that he can physically support her to even begin the process and right now they're not even issuing tourist visas to most people on that Donald Trump list

I have seen deserving well qualified people rejected, and the rotten ones accepted. The USA tourism visa system is a mess. The K-1 visa is way too easy to qualify for, if you really want her here that is the only way without very good connections.

John R Stiles The US doesnt have a Sponsor Program for Visa's , if the girl even hits that she's going to visit a male friend it will be denied, they 100% believe the woman will get to the US , Marry the guy and the apply for a spouse visa, instead of going through the process of the K-1 visa for a 90 day fiancee Visa, If the woman has already applied and been denied that its in her Visa file now and they will not approve her for a Tourist visa , Been all through it, 10 years ago my girl Mentioned she was going to stay with me and that was it Denied, Tried 2 more times, same results, the 3 time the guy Told her flat out its already marked in her file, said maybe try again in 5 years

Jim Jolley Thanks for this. I got engaged in Thailand 3 months ago and we are thinking if the B2 is easier to get vs the K-1. She is working, has her own house but don't know enough English for an interview. She is learning.

What's your advice?
Like

Chuck *********
Fizul Bacchus she will never get a tourist visa, it’s almost impossible, especially if you’re engaged. If she tries, she has to supply her bank info and if you’ve ever transferred her money, they will see it and it will be denied.

The best advise is to do the finance visa, wait the time and do it the right way. If she tries to get a tourist visa, is denied which she will be, and then tries the finance visa, it’s going to raise flags and may take longer than would have taken. They may believe something fishy is happening.

Jim Jolley So no Thai woman with a American bf will every be allowed a tourist visa even if she has a high paying job, a savings, home, family to take care of in thailand.. ?? They ask for the applicants social media these days. If there is an American boyfriend you think it's impossible to get a tourist visa? Did your gf have a job with high pay?

Roger Wayne They also ask what animals the person has. If the buffalo is sick and needs to go to the vet, they would not have money for travel and so get refused.

Your luck will vary. These people are right in that having a male friend is risky and arouses suspicion, but are wrong in that it 100% results in a denial.

Here’s what happened in my case (I was very lucky I guess)

-the officer asked my gf if I was her bf. She said yes. Officer thanked her for being honest.

-officer asked if we planned to marry. She said no because we weren’t ready.

-officer asked if we planned to marry at any point in the future. She said we had no future plans yet.

-officer asked all about me (who I was, where I lived, how long I knew her, if we ever met in person, etc etc). She answered everything honestly

-officer thanked her for her honesty. Her visa ended up approved.

Daniel Torrez I had a friend that has been denied twice. Master’s degree, works for govt 19 years, owns land and house here, all family here. First she did by herself. Second time she hired immigration attorney, same result. Even had me, I retired in Thailand, and my sister who lives in the U.S. write letters for her, I had to send my rental agreement here, my tax returns the last 3 years etc. They never even looked at the package they never looked at the package they put together. Didn’t look at the letters, tax returns, etc. She’s 48, not a younger woman, and had a letter from the government stating she worked there and they were giving her time off to visit the U.S. and expected back to work on a certain date. Never looked at any of it.

John R Stiles it does NOT guarantee approval. In fact it can hurt their chances. US see sponsors as a person who can only hurt the chances of a return back to Thailand. I thought based on my financial status...and home to offer...even pay for a trip....would help...it actually hurts.

US only want to see

1. Can you afford this trip

2. Every reason you need to return to Thailand

A. Caregiver

B. Lease or ownership of a home

C. Job

D. Bank account(s)...and how long funds have been in the account(s).

E. Any past travel to show if any violations on travel

Relationship with a US citizen is something you don't want to bring up.

Stay at friend's house...is something you don't want to bring up.

Gifted travel...you don't want to bring up...not even age gap if there is one.
