TLDR : Answer Summary
The marriage visa in Thailand does not directly allow a foreigner to work or own a business; however, it facilitates the ability to apply for a work permit. A foreigner can live in Thailand on a marriage visa, and if they secure a job offer, the employer can sponsor their work permit application. Therefore, while a marriage visa provides residency, a work permit is necessary for legal employment.

It gives you the chance to apply for a work permit.

Being on a marriage visa allows you to apply to work at a company. If they want to hire you, they, in turn, will get you a work permit.

You can live in Thailand on a marriage visa, but to work or actively help in a business (even your wife’s) you must have a Thai work permit.

The marriage visa doesn't allow you to work. A work permit allows you to work. But a marriage visa does allow a company to apply for a work permit for you if you're eligible and they're able to sponsor a foreign work permit.
