Hi! Do you actually need to stay in the country you are applying from or can you leave the country once you submitted the application? Because for my country I've heard it can take as long as 8 weeks.
Answer summary
The question addresses whether it is necessary to remain in the country of application after submitting a Thai visa application. Responses from the community indicate mixed views. Some members assert that the requirements stipulate staying in the jurisdiction until the visa is processed, while others claim that it might not be essential and that applicants can leave as long as they can return for any required interviews. It's generally advised to check with the relevant embassy or consulate for the most accurate information.

I do not see anything in the Los Angeles consulate’s published requirements or Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Department of Consular Affairs saying you must physically remain in its jurisdiction while the DTV application is pending. Its stated rule is that it can process applications for people who reside in its listed jurisdiction; it does not say you cannot travel after submitting.

That is a residency/jurisdiction requirement, not a rule that you must remain physically present every day while the file is being reviewed.

As long as you attend an interview if requested, I can’t see where it’s a requirement. With that said, I wouldn’t travel to Thailand.

You are:

a) required to stay in the same country were you apply from: pretty clearly written in the application rules

b) you are supposed to be available for a spontanous inteview at the embassy/consulate you applied at

Obviously it is completely up to you, to gather random stamps from other countries in your passport and when you have to come for b) let your application fly into your face when the IO sees your stamps - and dates of the stamps.

As we say in Thailand: up to you.

OP
lol thank you for the information but no need for the annoying tone! Not everybody lives in a country they love and that has other places to travel to. Everybody has personal reasons for everything so no need for your attitude! Thanks!

Only about 4000 posts saying you can't. Standard for a DTV applicant to be unable to read...

posts, not requirements. There is nothing on the LA Thai Consulate and Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Department of Consular Affairs lists no such requirement. It appears just posts saying so.

ForgivingLobster5813 Yes except keep in mind they could call you in for an interview and then you need to get back to the embassy ASAP.

You will have to be physically in the country during the whole application process

Thai consulates usually require you to remain within their jurisdiction until the visa process completes. Leaving can jeopardise your application

There have been published posts where someone had to travel and contacted the embassy and they said it was OK. Ask the Embassy. I remember the LA Consulate approving this.

Thanks so much! After I apply or before?

Anonymous participant I think either would work if they will reply. I specifically remember the LA one I mentioned as it went against everything all others said. He actually travelled to Thailand and entered Visa Exempt. They told him he would have to leave and enter to activate it. Then another specific one was opposite from UK Embassy. They told the guy to travel back to the UK from Thailand if he wanted the DTV and had to prove it.

It depends on how big your country is

For Americans you can apply in Guam which is a territory

But nothing is stopping you from traveling to Manila

It is not listed in LA and I emailed them for that answer. If it was a requirement, you would’ve been able to post the source rather than act the way you do with nonsensical responses.

If you think I’m too old,I welcome you to meet me. 😆

DTV_Begpacker last time I checked Manila was not yet US territory, or did something change over night?🤔

you can apply in Guam

But nothing is stopping you from traveling

If you’re a W2 employee you want that $130k tax credit by staying out of the USA and it’s territories for 335 days x year

They say you have to apply in your home country(s) or PR country…nothing says you have to stay there plus you don’t send in your passport

It is what it is

sit down old man, since the introduction of the DTV it was a requirement to remain physically in the jurisdiction of the Embassy/Consulate where you apply. That requirement never changed. Actually someone even posted it yesterday and it was specifically a requirement of the LA Embassy

DTV_Begpacker yes and they will say the same when they reject your application for not following the rules : “that’s life”🤷‍♂️.

you’re a digital nomad

You travel for work…you have an urgent meting in manila, Tokyo, Hong Kong etc

A foreign embassy can’t stop you from making Money or keeping you “hostage” in your country

You apply from Guam then you move around…it’s life

DTV_Begpacker no one was contesting how huge USA is, the point is to remain in the location where you apply during the whole application process. If they ask you to take a picture with your passport pages and see the stamp from Manila I doubt your visa will get approved. And then you can continue contemplating about how huge USA is🙄

@Za ******
Guam uses the LA consulate

But it’s 6,090 miles or 9,891 km’s away

The USA is huge and this proves it

DTV_Begpacker it was a requirement the whole time to physically remain in the jurisdiction of the Embassy where you apply
