An update: tried calling consulate in NY and says mailbox is full. My flight tomorrow has a layover in Seoul. Can I wait in Seoul till my visa is approved?
Answer summary
The individual is facing difficulties contacting the Thai consulate in New York regarding their visa status and is wondering if they can wait in Seoul, where they have a layover, until their visa is approved. Responses from the community suggest that waiting in Seoul may be possible depending on the type of visa applied for. Particularly, it is noted that if the visa is a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), it is risky to travel while the application is pending as it could jeopardize approval. Conversely, for certain non-immigrant visas, there might be options to activate the visa later upon entry into Thailand. Multiple users recommend contacting the consulate through social media for quicker responses.

Depending on what visa you applied for, just enter and get 60 days on entry, when and if you visa is sent just go on a couple of days holiday out of Thailand, and activate it on your return

I was told I can travel while pending approval from NYC embassy. So I left to Malaysia to await my dependent visa. It took 12 days for approval.

I emailed the NY embassy yesterday and asked them if I needed to be in the US to apply for a Non OA, they said that since I’m living in Vietnam, I needed to check with the Vietnam Thai embassy first, and if they directed me to a US Embassy to apply there even while living in Vietnam.

Just reached out to the embassy for confirmation and ignore the Internet experts

theoretically, yes you can do that. But it depends on the visa type. . . . if you applied for a DTV, you need to stay in the USA. If you aplied for a Non-Imm-visa type, you are free to activate it later. . . . in the last case, you can fly to Thailand, enter visa-exempt if your passport nationality allows, and when the visa gets issued, do a border bounce and activate it

not good advice. They should remain in the jurisdiction of the consulate they applied at until the process completes

"not good advice" 🤣😄 . . . . . .You will never catch me giving a bad advice 😜 . . . .btw, you should delete posts from Ant W Taylor more often - that's the guy with repeated "no good advices"

it depends to which type of visa he applied. If a DTV, he needs to stay in the USA. If a Non-Imm-O visa, he can leave the USA, as it can DEFINITELY be activated by a border bounce. He didn't say which visa type he applied for. . . I have altered the text

Andreas Mueller I heard thats illegal.

Somayeh Kashi that depends on which visa you applied for. If it is a DTV, you need to remain inside the USA. If it is a Non-Imm visa type, you are free to travel because it can be activated later (by the route I have explained)

Ray Barnhart It is highly risky and not recommended to travel while your Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is in progress.

The general rule is that you must remain in the country (and often the jurisdiction) where you submitted your application until it is approved.

Here is why:

Risk of Cancellation: If the embassy or consulate requires you to provide additional documents, undergo an interview, or drop off your passport, you will need to do so quickly.

Leaving the country can jeopardize your application or lead to a rejection without a refund.

Entering Thailand: Traveling to Thailand while your DTV is pending is highly problematic. Because the DTV is intended to be applied for while outside of Thailand, immigration or the embassy may view your entry as a breach of protocol, which can result in the immediate cancellation of your pending application.

Traveling Elsewhere: If you travel to a third country, you risk not having your passport if the embassy suddenly requests it for a physical stamp.

To ensure the best chances of approval for your 5-year visa, it is always safest to sit tight and wait for your decision in the same country where you applied.

Andreas Mueller how do they enforce that? What if you travel for work?
Andreas *********

Somayeh Kashi correct, you CAN'T leave the USA while a DTV application is in progress. If you leave, that will cancel your application and the fee is gone
